Malmö police launch hate crimes hotline

Malmö police have launched a dedicated hate crimes hotline after criticism over how victims have been treated when reporting a suspected crime.

"We have received complaints from several places," said Anna Gustafsson at Malmö police.

The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (Riksförbundet för homosexuellas, bisexuellas och transpersoners rättigheter – RFSL) are among those who have been critical of Malmö police.

"The Malmö police force is unfortunately known for a number of incidents that has led to low confidence among members of the LGBT community," said RFSL head Ulrika Westerlund to the local Sydsvenskan daily.

While Gustafsson does not share the view that the police have managed the situation poorly, the new hotline is a renewed statement of intent.

"Through a professional approach to work against hate crimes the police reinforce the message that society does not tolerate these crimes," she said in a statement.

The hotline - 0733 803700 - will function as a direct link between the public and the police in Malmö and Burlöv municipality and will be manned from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.

Hate crimes in Malmö have become a common feature of recent news reporting with a spate of attacks on synagogues and mosques over the past decade.

The government on Friday announced a new initiative in Malmö schools in a bid to address the problems faced by the city's Muslim and Jewish populations.

"We need to make a special effort in Malmö and highlight the seriousness of the situation on behalf of the government," said integration minister Erik Ullenhag.

Okay, I thought that some radical Muslims were harassing Jews but if I read this article right then it is ethnic Swedes who are harassing Muslims and Jews alike.

When have those from the "religion of peace" ever harassed those from different faiths?

"thnic Swedes who are harassing Muslims and Jews alike."

Of course you would understand it, since the lefty journalist cannot say the truth.

The funny thing is that his door would be knocked down with axes, if he would mention islamist as the problem and not the victim. These wonderful people are into burning, stabbing and beheading until everyone agrees in regards to how peaceful they are.

Again and again Uncle and Bcterry talk from their butt. LOL

Some of The Local's "journalists" are a complete joke. The basic journalistic rules of: who? what? when? where? why? and how? are thrown completely out the window in order to not offend the Muslims. Just awful.

Richard, in theLocals defence, they are journalists in sweden and they are no worse than the rest of MSM in sweden. Its just this crazy here.

Uncle, that is slowly changing, at least concerning jews in Malmö. Just today there was an article in SvD, "Historisk skuld bör hanteras varsamt", where the nature of the perpetrators is mentioned, sortof at least. Now, im not impressed by that article or its author but just wanted to get the facts straight.

@Icedearth.

.... And yet Bcterry and Uncle's bottom halves seem to be more in-tune with the mechanics of Swedish journalism than your top half.

@Richard Head:

Exactly. It is like Swedish rules for journalism 101:

Rule number 1: The only criminals in Sweden are Swedish criminals. Rule number 2: When the criminals are Swedish, post large images of their faces over the news. Rule number 3: When the criminals are non-Swedish, distort all imagery of their real identities and then make them appear Swedish. Swedish media have proven they are quite happy about doing this. Rule number 4: Never ever refer to criminals in Swedish using their real ethnic background - to do so would be unacceptable and "racist". Which brings us to rule number 5: All racism in Sweden is unacceptable: UNLESS being racist towards Swedes. These are the basic rules which replaced what when why and how.

If the government did not bring an outrageous numbers of forigners into the country we wouldn't have this problem and ill bet there wouldn't be as many attacks on jewish people either.
