Job programmes 'unfair' to foreign-born women

Foreign-born women are treated unfairly compared to newly arrived men when it comes to programmes to help them enter the Swedish labour market, according to an inquiry submitted on Tuesday to the integration minister, Erik Ullenhag.

"Today's system treats women unfairly systematically by offering inferior and delayed support for getting established in the labour market," Elin Landell, who led the inquiry, wrote in an opinion piece in the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

"In municipalities, case workers tend to prescribe lower demands on women compared to men. Case workers' approach is clearly coloured by assumptions about foreign-born women as a group."

According to the inquiry, commissioned by the government last year and tasked with proposing measures to boost employment among foreign-born women, the current employment rate among foreign-born women in Sweden is 60 percent, 10 percent lower than that of foreign-born men.

Landell writes that many of the common explanations offered for women's lower employment rate, such as the need to care for children or low levels of education, don't mesh with reality.

She explains that women prefer full-time work to the same extent as men and that most women who immigrated to Sweden in 2005 due to humanitarian reasons or family ties only had one or two children after five years in Sweden.

Only five percent had more than four children.

In order to boost foreign-born women's chances of entering the labour market, the inquiry proposes a number of measures, including gender-blind matching as well as a new labour market programme which includes enrollment in Swedish language classes and labour market preparation courses.

The programme should be the equivalent of a full-time work and last no more than 24 months.

Other proposals include increased follow-up as well as more local support for newly arrived parents.

"The inquiry shows that early efforts substantially increase the probability of being employed five years after immigrating," Lindell writes in DN.

"Both men and women therefore need to be offered conditions allowing them to participate in the labour makert and society in general."

They do work. Pumping out kids to claim more social.

#1, if you would read carefully, it says that most women had one or two children. That actually contradicts your "pumping out". Sometimes it's better to shut up.

"one or two children after five years in Sweden."

5 years. I wonder what the prospect will be in the next 20.

only 5% had more than 4 kids. Exactly how many had 4 kids and how many of them had 3 kids? Sweden pays a little money to keep the standard of life of the kids, but parents from poor countries see this as an award for bearing kids. It is a widely talked about rumor among immigrants that Sweden needs babies from immigrants to keep its population high. They don't care that Sweden is struggling to put the 7.5% unemployed to work and many young Swedes immigrate to Norway in search of employment.

i guess not having shtload of kids would help them get into the jobmarket sooner.

however most foreign women i have met in sfi actually try and get jobs right away. only a small percentage sit home and poop babies.

they might want to research which women from which parts of the world tend to do what. very few asian women ive met recently have gotten kids in the time they been in sweden, they are too busy working their asses off.

there is however a huge amount of women that have no high education or qualification a huge percentage of asylum seeker women are like that so no wonder they cant get job.

im all for no discrimination but when sweden does these researches they should get more information on what and who to focus on so they can approach the issue better prepared.

and maybe this would help sweden see that they have enough people in sweden , both swedish and immigrants ,that need attention when it comes to helping them get into the job market.

and maybe then sweden wouldnt be so eager to import so many unqualified labour , im sure a lot of these people deserve the opportunity for a better life, but first lets focus on the ones that are already here.

if we cant take care of the ones that are already here then theres a problem.
