Nurses in care home scandal escape charges

The preliminary investigation against two Norrköping nurses, under suspicion of maltreating patients at a care home in central Sweden, has been dropped despite allegations that one pressed vomit down a patient’s throat.

"Different people have different views as to how the patients should be handled," said defence lawyer Claes Egnell to news agency TT.

The allegations against the two assistant nurses were serious and included one patient having had her vomit shoved back down her throat and other patients slapped and pinched. One woman, 100 years old, was subjected to her own fist being shoved in her mouth, reported outraged family members.

Both police and the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) opened up investigations shortly after the allegations became public in July last year.

However, after concluding the preliminary probe, prosecutors found that the assistant nurses’ way to treat the patients was not justifiable but concluded that the “circumstances were such that the suspects did not have the ability to deal with the situation in an ethically correct and dignified way”.

In the decision, the prosecutor general wrote that both nurses had already lost their jobs and that the court would not be likely to give them more than a fine. One of the plaintiffs has since died and many of the other witnesses are also deemed not to be fit to take part in a trial.

Defense lawyer Egnell told TT that he was not surprised that the preliminary criminal investigation had been dropped. He doesn’t think that his client ought to have lost her job, despite allegations that he pushed vomit back into a patient’s mouth.

“It has never really been made really clear that this is what happened. I guess that is why charges won’t be filed - because of course that would not have been acceptable,” Egnell said.

This is how we do things in Best-in-the-World Sweden.

"Different people have different views as to how the patients should be handled..."

Some have the view that the elderly should have vomit stuffed down their throats. Let us by all means respect all views.

Excuse me? What happened to minimum standards of care?

Would these nurses escape further action if the patients had been any other age? What about infants?

There is no excuse for what happened - none at all

However I don't know why the Local persists in calling the staff "nurses" when it is quite clear that they were not nurses at all but very poorly trained care assistants.

Disgusting. Another example of the Swedish "justice" system at work. The police can't catch criminals and, when they accidentally get some handed to them, the courts let them off. Also a real compliment to the health care system. I agree with #3, why does the age of the victim have anything to do with it? Apparently it is okay for care givers, or anyone else, to assault an elderly person. They are going to die pretty soon anyway.

Something I recently happened upon and translated to the best of my understanding...

Ättestupa, ätteklubbe, and släktklubbe are old terms which still surface in debates regarding the care and treatment of the elderly.

Ättestupa refers to select cliffs, off of which, the Nordic elderly were said to have flung themselves when they could no longer support themselves or work on the farm. Ätteklubbe or släktklubbe refers to clubs allegedly used to kill non-productive elderly.

Anthropologists have found evidence of what they believe to be elderly killings through starvation, neglect, poison, and nails driven into brains. However, the reality of the ättestupa and ätteklubbe/släktklubbe is questioned by contemporary historians or viewed as a short-lived occurrence.

Some historians see these references (ättestupa, etc.) as myths and pedagogical folklore whose purpose was 1) to warn the elderly against willingly accepting old age and collective murder and 2) to urge the elderly to maintain power over their own lives as long as possible.

I'm sure "care" will only improve once politicians cut an additional 2000 healthcare jobs. :(

Society is judge by how you treat your young and old!

So very sad how the elderly are disregarded. They have lived through so many things that kids these days will never know. They know how to survive through Depressions, Wars, famines and yet are just thrown away because they are old.

So tell me what really constitutes "old"? When you are young and in your twenties everything is old when you get to your fourties you realize you are now getting old. You are already saying goodbye to so many loved ones. So tell me what is "old"?

Old is when they are throwing dirt on your face as they lower you into the ground until that moment everyone has value.
