Gothenburg second in Lonely Planet top ten list

Travel guide Lonely Planet has hailed Sweden’s Gothenburg as the second best place in the world to visit for value of money, touting the city's "glitzy main drag", "edgy art" and charming neighbourhoods.

“There’s good value in Sweden if you know where to look,” claimed the travel guide in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013 publication.

The guide listed Gothenburg in western Sweden as the best place in the world for those on a shoestring budget, behind only Brazil's Rio.

“This is extremely fun, almost surreal,” said Camilla Nyhman, acting CEO of events company Göteborg och Co to the Göteborgs-Posten newspaper (GP).

Lonely Planet praised the city’s highlights that can be found behind the scenes:

The guide especially mentions neighbourhoods away from the city centre like Haga and a small town close to the city, Kvarnbyn, as well as cheap eats and art attractions like Röda Sten, plus picnic-friendly city views in Keillers Park.

“If that wasn’t enough, ferries trundling round the beautiful, car-free southern archipelago are a tram ride from the city centre. In short, this is as much Scandinavia as you can get for your money.”

The Swedish city came in ahead of Namibia, Cambodia and Bolivia in the top five. Portland, Oregon in the US took home sixth place, with the rest of the list made up of Spain, Slovenia, Nepal and Georgia.

The best place in the world for those on a shoestring budget? You have to be freaking kidding me.

Lonely Planet must be very desperate. Göteborg is just one big building site.

Lonely Planet always throws in a ridiculous one to try and create surprise and interest.

I've lived on and off in Gothenburg for over a decade and although good for family life, I wouldn't advise anyone to take a weekend trip here, especially not outside of summer.

As for 'on a shoestring budget'...... hmmm.

It´s second on their list because if you read their babble on Göteborg on their internet page the following thanks is given

"Thanks to West Sweden Tourism Board who sponsored our weekend break in Gothenburg" They should have paid a few kronor extra to become number 1-

This is by far the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week.

Has The Local followed up Intrepidfox's comment that the West Sweden Tourist Board "sponsored" Lonely Planet's weekend in Göteborg?

There might be a juicy scandal here The Local, get to work.

Jelous Stockholmers, give it a break already. You will never be as charming and pleasant as gothenburg or its people.

@ Roffe I lived in Gtb for 3 years, and I am NOT from Stockholm, I am from Brazil and Gtb was the MOST BORING City I ever lived, People dress Horrible there, Very Bonden mentality...G-d How Bored I was...So moved to Stockholm which is Much nicer and Friendlier....

I'm not surprised, Gothenburg is an amazing place, the people are really friendly and there's loads to see and do (eg. boat trips to Vrångö island).

A few impressions: http://www.fm1721.net/#!gothenburg/cmo5

How ridiculous. Usually European cities that size have something to offer, Gothenburg has nothing. And cheap? You gotta be kidding me.

Other than maybe a short weekend in Stockholm and a boat ride through the archipelago, there are way too many other much more interesting destinations throughout Europe.
