An elk hunter in central Sweden got the shock of his life on Sunday when a wild bear sprung out of the ground just metres away, prompting the Swede to instinctively shoot it dead.

Leif Backlars, a 45-year-old hunter from Enviken, central Sweden, was in for a surprise when hunting for elk in Dalarna on the weekend.

“The dog started barking and I thought he’d seen an elk,” Backlars told The Local.

However, there were no elks in sight.

Rather, the hunter's dog was reacting to movement in what appeared to be two small holes just a few metres from Backlars.

“Suddenly a bear jumped out of the ground and came at me, so I shot at it without thinking. I wasn’t scared, there was no time. Everything happened so fast,” he said.

The hunter shot three rounds into the 120 kilogramme female bear, knocking it backwards and fatally wounding it.

Backlars later realized that the bear was going into hibernation and had covered itself, leaving only two small holes in the ground.

With the bear hunting season over, local police are now looking into whether hunting crime charges should be filed, but Backlars is not worried.

“We’ll see what happens, but I don’t think anything will come of it,” he said.

“It was me or the bear.”

The state has now taken care of the body of the dead bear.

Sweden’s annual bear hunt runs from August 21st to October 15th, where over 300 bears are professionally hunted to cull animal numbers.

The photo of the dead bear makes me feel sick and sad ,she was minding her own business and was disturbed basically by a killer I find these people have cold eyes and a cold heart towards wild animals . Are hunters a different breed in so much as they appear to lack consciousness and empathy regarding other living creatures when many other humans find treating animals as killing objects abhorrent .Yes in the situation the hunter had to defend himself but why get pleasure from killing any animal in the first place . Perhaps it's due to lack of education regarding the social and emotional traits animals have and we humans have much to learn about them and our relationship in nature to them ,and yes i am a vegetarian and proud of it .

Funny how Swedish bears only attack hunters carrying high-caliber rifles.

They must be suicidal!

The photo of the dead bear makes me feel sick to the stomach and sad .She was minding her own business when she was disturbed basically by a a killer .Yes in the situation the hunter found himself he had to defend himself but why go out to kill animals in the first place These people have cold eyes and a cold hearts and seem to be a different breed in that they seem to lack consciousness and empathy regarding other creatures who share this planet . This is in contrast to people who find hunting wildlife for pleasure abhorrent . Maybe it's a lack of education in learning about the social and emotional way animals live their lives :and yes i am a vegetarian before folks start going on about whether i eat meat .

Kara Redbee are You pratleing on about being a veg , to convince US or Yourself that eating veg is Better? I mean do You ever think about interupting the life cycle of an Onion or Carrot is better than to do the same with a Pig, Goat or Hazelnut?? I'll bet the only thing we consume that does not affect another creature/Plant is Water . Tomato and Lettuce just want to exist in their own space too. You make a cold evaluation of other people, I 'll bet You don't even grow Your own food , only bitch about the Sami eating Ren . OR ??? some of the 1940s Germans were convinced of their correct behaviour too.

Every year the same old Swedish hunting story. I

The innocent hunter attacked or threatened by a bear, boar, or elk. And the poor hunter has to protect himself. Of course, that the hunter is in the animal's environment for the purpose of killing some animal or another...always escapes the truth. So, in this case a bear is killed because some dumb ass startled the bear when the bear only wanted to safely sleep through winter. I hope the authorities do their job and file criminal charges on Mr. Leaf Backlars!

if he was a hunter how could the outcome be any different? Hunters hunt because they are not really masculine or intelligent, and feel have to make up for it with their guns..many mass murderers have also been hunters..this is just giving him publicity, which he clearly wants.
