Swedish press highlights Obama challenges

Following the significant coverage of the US elections in the Swedish media, the opinion pages of the four main newspapers have moved focus to the challenges which lie ahead for the re-elected American president and the impact these will have on the country as well as the rest of the world.

Independently liberal broadsheet Dagens Nyheter (DN) wrote on Thursday that Obama should follow Clinton’s example from 1994 and steer Democrat policy toward the middle of the political spectrum.

“The responsibility rests heavy on Obama's shoulders to shape the next term of office. He must compromise and open up for dialogue with the opposition in congress. That’s the only way to expose their rigidity,” the paper wrote.

DN also said that there are major challenges ahead for President Obama and that the nation will be facing fiscal ruin in case the Democrats and the Republicans fail to together solve the financial crisis in the country, something which surely also affects the rest of the world.

Another Swedish paper that highlighted the international need for a strong US was tabloid Expressen, also independently liberal, which wrote that reaching an agreement on the nation’s finances with the opposition will be the big test to Obama’s second term in office.

“Will he manage to reach a budget compromise with the Republicans that both increases taxes ad slashes costs? If not, the US risks being thrown off the fiscal cliff which will send the US as well as the rest of the world into another recession,” the paper wrote.

In the independently liberal-conservative broadsheet, Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), political scientist Marcus Oscarsson wrote that the tests that await president Obama during his second term will be significant.

“The challenges ahead of the re-elected president are gigantic. The ever increasing national debt and the huge budget deficit will be an immediate test,“ he wrote for SvD.

As if this wasn’t enough, the nation is at the same time trying to deal with unemployment figures at 7.9 percent.

Neither will the fact that the Republicans are still in majority in the House of Representatives make it any easier for Obama in his second term of office, argues Oscarsson.

In the independently social-democratic tabloid Aftonbladet, editorial writer Karin Petterson was pondering what Obama will do next; which battle he will choose to take on.

Provided he reaches a crucial agreement with the Republicans on state finances, he will realistically have time to focus only on one more area, she argues, identifying immigration law or climate-friendly energy policies as alternatives.

She added that one must hope the president isn’t too tired after the long and often dirty election campaign.

“Because now he must choose his next battle – and win it,” she wrote.

A popular comment making the rounds in America today is:

"Will Obama now start blaming his failures on the mess he inherited from himself?'.

The gallows humor does a good job of conveying post-election sentiment and expectations.

"..(DN) wrote on Thursday that Obama should follow Clinton's example from 1994 and steer Democrat policy toward the middle of the political spectrum."

Huh??? You mean steer it back from the rightwing to the center???? (Nonsensical drivel from DN.)

Obama Déjà vu

Almost immediately, upon winning the presidential election, Obama stated he wanted to get together with Mitt Romney to discuss the country's future.

Mitt Romney? The private equity leveraged buyout super debt-creator? The jobs offshoring guy who offshores all his money as well?

The guy who only knows how to raid the US tax base, not to enhance it? (And doesn't the Obama administration already have plenty of private banksters for such discussions?)

After saying that, President Obama called both Boehner and McConnell, neither of whom would accept his call????

Not accepting the call of the President of the USA? Almost like they consider him nothing more than a former local organizer who is nothing more today than a hapless figurehead?

And the beat goes on . . . .

Sure hopr that Obama has an excellent command of Swedish, so he won't miss out on all this fantastic advice the Swedish press is providing for free,

These are the same challenges as last term!!. Obama spent so much time and inertia 'reaching across the isle', but the hard-nose Republicans, who control the House, are certainly not going to hand his legacy to him on a silver platter.

The problem isn't Democrats or Republicans - it's 2-party politics that's to blame. It's certainly time to have 4 or even 5 equally matched parties with different agendas.

As it is now, no matter what Obama does, he will alienate or dissatisfy half the electorate

The same thing happens when the Republicans are in power, as well as in other countries that have numerous parties.

No one will ever satisfy the whims of every one.

Irrespective of who won, the Swedish press know better than anyone what has to be done, no matter where or what in the world, and the new president would be told what to do. We see it in Sweden, campaigns here and there, always sanctimonius, always preaching, and ALWAYS knowing what should be done, in every field possible. I do not know where they get all their information, or experience from, but by God they could run every country in the world no matter the politics. They KNOW.

I saw a comment in a newspaper the other day by Ingvar Carlsson - something about sitting on the bench - and not trying to tell the players how to play. Try telling that to the Swedish press ! ! !

I browse DN and SvD and Expressen from time to time and consider them leftist birdcage lining.

Even so, they seem to be accurately apprised of the federal government's dire fiscal position. What they're not aware of is Obama and his Party's reckless disregard of the danger, or the fact that any deal reached will be so full of accounting tricks and legerdemain that it will do nothing to solve any of the following catastrophic fiscal problems:

(1) a $16 trillion national debt increasing by $4 billion each day, 70% of which is printed money;

(2) $100 trillion in unfunded federal entitlement liabilities, with the bulk of the Baby Boomers set to retire in the next five years;

(3) 15% real unemployment and the lowest the labor force participation rate since 1981;

(4) 47 million Americans on food stamps, up 70% from 2008;

(5) significant economic uncertainty among businesses and investors due to the looming fiscal collapse, regulatory overreach and general distrust of the Obama regime;

(6) California, America's most populist state, is quickly becoming an economic basket case that will need the federal government to bail it out. Illinois and New York are not far behind.

I could go on, but you get the picture. American politics has transcended the left-right divide; we're all going down to fiscal ruin. Once this happens, the only remaining question will become whether there's any point keeping the states united. I don't think there will be for most states.

@ cogito and @ Lavaux

Right on all points! I find it unbearable to live in a country where the majority are idiots that think that the government knows best, that they have a right to entitlements, increasing government size, oversight, control and an absolutely unbelievable corruption In the highest levels!

As a former Swede I hate to see this country going bankrupt all around me and I think it is time to bail out before it is too late -- but no way am I going back to Sweden!
