Children sold for sex and crime in Sweden: report

More than 150 children, most of them foreign-born and some as young as three years old, have been victims of human trafficking in Sweden, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The report, presented by the Stockholm County Administrative Board (Stockholms länsstyrelsen), found a total of 166 children had been stuck in life of sexual exploitation, begging, and criminality due to human trafficking between 2009 and 2011.

"The situation is much more dire than previously believed," County Administrative Board investigator Ingrid Åkerman said in a statement.

The survey, based on responses from the country's 290 municipalities, found a roughly equal number of boys and girls were trafficking victims who ranged in age from three to 17.

While girls were most often sexually exploited, boys were used primarily to carry out thefts, although some boys were also sexually exploited.

Two thirds of the children had foreign nationalities, according to the report, while half were only in Sweden on a temporary basis and one third were children of asylum seekers.

However, there are thought to be a large number of unreported cases.

"In 2011 alone, 438 asylum-seeking children disappeared and we don't know where they are. It may be that they know they weren't granted residence permits, but it could also be due to human trafficking," Åkerman told the TT news agency.

According to Åkerman, Sweden must be "much, much better" at training social service employees to identify at-risk children, something she argues requires spending more money at the local level.

She also believes that children's rights in the Swedish legal system must be strengthened.

The report found that only 68 cases of child trafficking had been reported to police, with charges being filed in only a handful of cases.

Only six cases of human trafficking came to trial between 2009 and 2011, resulting in two convictions.

"Children have a hard time making their claims in the legal process. A review of legislation is needed and it must be made clear why so few children have their cases given a legal hearing," said Åkerman, who argued that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child ought to be incorporated into Swedish law.

Is this really the direction people want Sweden to go? The choices are plain: tolerate it, or do something about it. The policy until now has been to tolerate it, and seemingly even to encourage it by creating the conditions in which it thrives.

If toleration is no longer a preference, significant changes to laws, proceedures and attitudes need to be taken by the government, the police, the social services and the immigration board. Far more than those suggested by Ms Åkerman.

Sadly, I do not for one minute think those changes will be made. They are inconsistent with the spirit of multi culturalism, and therfore repugnant to many in power.

Hundreds of children will continue to pay the price, and the people behind trafficking will continue to find Sweden a safe, pleasant and profitible place to do business.

just back from Paris. Its appalling. Gypsies on every corner trying every stunt posible. Went fo a walk and was blantantly targeted in the middle of the day in full sight at least 10 times an hour.

bumping into, the ring , fake surveys, being accosted, kids grabbing your arm in crowds.

In the end I was grabbing them and getting right in their face - f#ck off you gypsie scum! seemed to work so they must be in communication with each other. was very woried as their were so many of them and I was walking around with a 5yo daughter with long blonde hair and the way we were being followed I could only think they were giving serious thought to getting hold of her.

police do nothing.

back in stockholm Im over the same scum hassling me on trains,in cafes and in the street. please, please, please. Surely their must be a way of rounding them up and sending them back to Romania. you dont want stockholm turning into a scum wasteland like Paris where kids are used for crime.

I would not go back to Paris because of these people.

I don't see the statistics here or elsewhere suporting this hysteria.More likely someone is building up a reson for existence of their job. It is a common trick - in the USA so called Child Protective Services very often actually steal American children and destroy the family for tiny reasons or not any at all. Children are commodity for these sick creeps - not everything by-pedal is human. Check for instance www.fightcps .com or other long existing sites. Also don't turn your beautifull country into EU colony , run by green blooded aristocrats. UN "special interests" want to make everybody feel guilty of this or that and what else? OWN YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN!
