Found bag puts Sweden Democrat MP in doubt

Soon after the Sweden Democrats rushed to the defence of MP Lars Isovaara, who reportedly snuffled and spat in contempt at a parliamentary security guard, the bag he said was lost in the robbery that upset him was found left behind in a restaurant.

Isovaara's version of the story was put in doubt when tabloid Expressen revealed a new timeline of events.

They report that Isovaara called the police at 2.30am on Wednesday to report being robbed, allegedly by two "unknown, immigrant-background men", in an encounter that made him fall out of his wheelchair.

Isovaara had been on his way back to his overnight quarters at the Swedish parliament building from a restaurant. Staff there told Expressen they had found his bag at 2.10am, a full 20 minutes before the alleged robbery.

Police called to the scene then witnessed Isovaar "making pig noises" and "spitting in contempt" at the guard, who reportedly had an immigrant background, prompting the officers to report the MP for racist abuse.

The party quickly sprang to Isovaara's defence, saying the witnesses must have mistaken his sobs for grunts.

As news of the bag find broke, however, they altered their tune.

"If it turns out we have been mislead about the incidents there will naturally be consequences," said party leader Jimmie Åkesson when faced with the new information.

The anti-immigrant party has been under relentless scrutiny lately after a video showed three of its young hotshot politicians hurling racist and sexist abuse at passers-by during a night out in Stockholm.

Despite the media coverage, the party continues to perform strong in voter opinion polls.

A new opinion poll released on Thursday by TV4/Novus show the party now has support of 8.6 percent of the electorate, a 2.1 percentage point rise since the last Novus poll in October.

New supporters are found primarily in Stockholm and among the elderly.

The pollsters claim most of the demographic are voters who have abandoned the Moderate Party and the Social Democrats.

@The Local

Wake up! There's a story here with much more significance to Sweden and immigrants to Sweden (your public).

After a deluge of negative stories in the press (including, on a daily basis, The Local), support for the Sweden Democrats has …… risen.

Instead of recycling stories from the Swedish media, get out there amongst the electorate, find out what is going on, and report that.

I am already awake. Even at work. @robin. Wat u said is what really worries me. Though it has been proved that sd members are bunch of opportunist, nacists, low life pple and support is still growing. Pple with no clue of how to govern except to attack immigrants are going to rule us makes to lose my sleep.. Many sd parliamentary members in many kommunes have left post due to incompetence. Wen håkan juholt was been chased like a dog nobody called local anti sd. The table now turned in the direction of sd, we called them names. We have problems in sverige but sd is not the solution but a major part of it. Many of them never worked in their lives till they came on sudden wealth brought by politics. That is why pple like late petzäll ended up in drugs.

Isovaara appears to be a racist who tells blatant lies.

The party intially suggested that his grunts, at a secuirty guard, might have been mistaken for sobs, but no suggestion of a innocent explanation for his spitting.

A thoroughly nasty person - but in the right party.

sounds scary to hear SD is getting more popular after being plagued by all these non-stop, series of scandals of its 'high' profile 'politicians'.

'immigrant-background' is a very broad term to use. There is no racial abuse there. These MP's that have been exposed are immature people who can't handle their booze and are unfit to rule anything. That's the issue here. To cry 'Immigrant' as if one was compared to a Negro slave is also immature. The 'broadly termed immigrants' chose to come here, not forced. Be proud of your race and celebrate democracy. Don't hate on the democrats. I love my Swedish family and friends but will never want to be Swedish or make it my preferred language. I'm a lucky and proud international with a greater world view! I make Sweden a better place. \m/
