Refugees made to face winter freeze in flip-flops

Asylum seekers in Blekinge County in southern Sweden are facing the chill of winter without socks or proper shoes, as migration authorities have been unable to provide a winter clothing allowance in time.

Many residents at the Asarum refugee centre are wearing flip-flops and don't have access to proper winter jackets, reports Sveriges Radio (SR).

Some are sharing clothes given to them by other residents.

"This man is very poor, so I give him my shoes when he goes to buy food. And he hasn't got a winter jacket either," Birol Rashidov from Macedonia told SR.

An application to receive a clothing allowance is pending in the hands of the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).

"The staff at the centre has told us not to worry," Rashidov said.

A Migration Board spokeswoman Camilla Hegbart said staff there are processing about 150 similar applications at present.

"It's a shame that this is how it is," she told SR.

She added that the agency might have to discuss a policy for how to deal with the arrival of winter in the coming years.

However, the asylum seekers at the Asarum centre will probably have to wait for another week before the money comes in that will allow them to get proper winter clothing, said Hegbert.

A refugee from Macedonia seeking asylum in Sweden? Why?

So migrationsverket can`t take proper care of the ones already in sweden, yet it is planning to bring in 50•000 more. When they become criminals, you complain. However, migration can beg myrona to provide them with clothes and shoes.

Do you remember the reaction of many Swedes after Breivik's killings? So much support for his actions that the newspapers in Sweden had to close their websites in order to avoid xenophobic, racist comments. For a typical Swede, an immigrant is not worth anything. They are, maybe, just good enough for selling sausages on the streets (Swedes don't want to do that). And why should they care if they have no shoes? The strong ones will survive. The weak ones will die. This is how people think (if they think, at all).

"For a typical Swede, an immigrant is not worth anything"

Oh, them awful swedes... A nation that gets more refugees than any other country in Europe per capita. How awful them swedes are... Surely they should install every refugee as a top chief of any swedish company by default, then and MAYBE then "theobserver" will grant the swedes some slack. But no, probably then he will whine that the nazi swedes do not grant big enough bonuses to asylum CEO's.

But EVERYONE ELSE loves refugees! Muslim countries do not know anything better than a refugee and give them all the rights, free education and healthcare. South america is tolerant beyond belief and every Paraguayan loves an Uruguayan, as Argentinian loves a fellow Brazilian. Africans are dying to get some refugees. Kenyats are ordering refugees from Congo in palettes. South Africans celebrate hundreds of thousands refugees every day with a pint of beer!

Only them swedes are so awful.

Why the hell a Macedonian (best part of the best country in economic sense in the entire Eastern Block) require a COAT from swedish taxpayers? WHY? Can I get one too?

Uncle: this is true, there is a large number of immigrants in Sweden, but this is because Swedes are lazy and don't want to do ordinary jobs. Immigrants are nothing but cheap labour.

What where they thinking, did they plan to go to Hawaii or something, who would bring just beachwear like flipflops to Sweden in December? If one choose to migrate to Sweden of all countries then they should know it get's a bit chilly here in the winter, that can't come as a surprise, could it? Well, If you can't take the cold get out of the... fridge.

Every refugee get 2100 kr per person every month so why don't they just go buy some shoes and coats at the Salvation Army or something? Why wait to get the extra winter clothes bonus money if you are really cold?

If immigrants are nothing but cheap labour how come most of them don't work? No need to work when you have 10 kids and the tax payer has to foot the bill.
12:20 December 1, 2012 by newc
Emerentia do you think 2100kr are enough to cover basic food expenses in Sweden ?
19:17 December 1, 2012 by Edward Teach
To right this wrong is to send them back to where they came from.
21:02 December 1, 2012 by Emerentia
Yes, I know it's enough, it's 70 kr/day. That's is supposed to cover food, clothes and hygien products.

It's not a lot, but you can manage if you cook at home, don't throw away food and dont eat out. If you for example eat oatmeal and an egg for breakfast, and then a soup with lentils, potatoes or onions with some homemade bread for lunch and then something like spaghetti with a tomato sauce for dinner. That would cost much. Many refugees prefer to send some of the money they recieve to relatives back home rather than spend it on what it's supposed to.
