Gunmen shot a female Christian charity worker from Sweden in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore on Monday leaving her hospitalized, police said.

Birgitta Almeby, 72, was returning from work when she was attacked by unknown assailants in the upmarket locality where she lives.

"She was returning from her office and was attacked when she arrived in front of her home in the Model Town neighbourhood," Awais Malik, a senior police official told AFP.

Doctors said Almeby was hit in the chest and was recovering in hospital.

"A bullet hit her in the chest. We have treated her and she is improving now," Ali Usman, a doctor at the hospital, told AFP.

No further details about the attack were immediately available.

Police and colleagues told AFP Almeby is the managing director in Pakistan of Full Gospel Assemblies, which describes itself as a 'church fellowship' founded in the United States with congregations worldwide.

The organization runs charities in the country including a technical training institute, adult literacy centre and orphanage.

She has lived in Pakistan for the past 38 years, according to police.

Considered Pakistan's cultural capital and close to the Indian border, Lahore is a city of eight million that in 2010 suffered a string of high-profile bombings blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

In August last year, a 71-year-old US development worker Warren Weinstein, was kidnapped after gunmen tricked their way into his Lahore home. Pakistani officials believe he is being held by al-Qaeda and Taliban extremists in Pakistan's lawless northwest.

In April, a British Muslim Red Cross worker was beheaded nearly four months after being kidnapped in the southwestern city of Quetta.

To Hell with traditional Pakistani behaviour

The Local seems to thinks its OK to write things like that on this website, so I thought I might give it a try and test the moderator's hypocracy parameters.

Of course, I would never base my opinion of an entire cuture on the actions of one person. That would be stupid. But some people do, and the Local really should not encourage them to do so by printing their opinion pieces. (see below). Or we might end up with a society in Sweden where twisted monsters shoot 72 year old ladies on account of their religion.

I wouldnt be commenting to fast here. its long been known that the USA uses these groups as spying agencies. who would suspect a 72 yo lady right.

apart from which why cant christians get it through their heads to stop preaching? no other religion does it. and really a 72yo lady shot in the chest and doing fine? really?

so its OK for the USA and its western allies to rip people off the street will nilly - hold them in detention and torture them with no access to legal assistance on trumped up charges of whatever. or even go into their homes and execute on the spot - but when someone else does it - from a "technical training centre" its an outrage. The USA and Israel has set the standard for abduction and torture so dont be surprised when the rest of the world follows suit.

sounds like a giant beat up to me. poor poor christian american - bad bad muslim.

Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries to live right now. Here the people who are in danger of loosing their lives on regular basis are Christians, Hindus, and Shias who are victims of target killings recently.

The lives of females and children are in miserable condition. Females are subjected to discrimintaion in all kind of matters.

Overall Pakistan is a country which is heading towards a civil war. Other reasons of being this country as most dangerous country to live are natural disastors, poor healthy conditions and environment, good relations between police, lawful agencies with criminal gangs which means blind justice, child labour and abuse and lot of other things. For Swedish readers the following news paper in English can provide more information about Pakistan before they are travelling here:
