Sweden Democrats surge in new voter poll

Support for the Sweden Democrats has risen 2.5 percentage points to 7.9 percent according to a new poll published on Wednesday, despite the scandals that have plagued the party since mid-November.

The political party preferences survey carried out by Statistics Sweden (SCB) – one of the most watched and respected voter polls in Sweden – showed that Swedish voters have more confidence in the far-right party than they did in May.

According to the figures released on Wednesday, the troubled party has the support of 7.9 percent of the voters, up from the 5.4 percent the party received in the SCB's last survey in May.

The poll places the Sweden Democrats as Sweden's fourth most popular political party, just behind the Green Party's 8.6 percent, with the Moderates and Social Democrats at 28.1 percent and 34.8 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, no other party saw significant changes besides the Social Democrats, which saw its support sink by 2.5 percentage points.

According to SCB, the Sweden Democrats' rise is "statistically significant" compared to May and to the Riksdag election in 2010, where the party took home 5.7 percent of the votes.

From May, the Sweden Democrats have gained around 0.9 percent of voters from the Social Democrats, about 0.8 percent from the "do not know" group and about 0.6 percent from the Moderates, wrote SCB.

The Party Preference Survey was carried out in November and was conducted by telephone interviews of a random selection of 8,999 people entitled to vote in the Riksdag election.

The interviews were conducted by telephone between November 1st and 25th, with 76 percent of the interviews taking place in the first half of the month.

Incidentally, the scandals that have swept the Sweden Democrats began November 14th, when the Expressen newspaper published a video filmed in 2010 that showed three party members in a drunken and racist tirade. Since then, the three men have stepped down.

On November 29th, Sweden Democrat MP Lars Isovaar stepped down after he his oinking and spitting attack at a security guard of foreign descent made headlines.

People were asked "Which party would you vote for if an election were to be held in the next few coming days?"

Eye catching interpretation as the figures shown in media before the "video problem" showed 11.9 percent support. Since little is done to the immigration policy and how media talks about it I'm sure that SD support will raise again when their version of the Toblerone debacle has passed over.

Phew , only 7.9 percent huh ? !

I feared it would be 70.9 percent .

"Surge" and the perverted imagination thinks of a 120% troop increase in Afghanistan ( cowardly, to outnumber the enemy)

Just a half of one percent would be "a surge" for the Christian Democrats who are slightly down from 3.8 % to 3.7%

Hopefully, in foreigner Jesus name they''ll get a little surge this CXhristmas (steal a few Christmas presents from the Sweden Democrats...

I am an immigrant but will vote SD, something has to be done to stop my fellow immigrants turning it into the type of country we all faut so hard to escape from
16:23 December 5, 2012 by procrustes
@Rey

The SD is not the solution--they are part of the problem. If they had their way every non-blue-eyed non-born-in-Sweden of Swedish roots going back 500 years would be summarily thrown out of the country.

The rest of the political spectrum is very interested in solving the problem of immigrant crime. Voting for the SD is shooting yourself in the head.

@Rey, You comment proves an hypothesis I had circling around in my head and that is that immigrants are more prejudiced towards other immigrants than native born Swedes. I came to Sweden not as a refugee but rather with a proper job and the holder or a proper EU, US and Argentinean passport. In short, the only fighting I did was objecting at the beginning to coming to Sweden but that's in the past....

My take is that the SD will get between 15 to 20% in 2014, it's probably too late to save Sweden, but it's good enough to prolong its life.

P.S. don't trust these polls, the SD would get about 10% if the election is happen now!

Spoiler: It's the immigration.

Tell the mainstream politicians to deal with the problem and the right wing parties will disappear.

People want something done and there's nowhere else to turn.

@ procrustes: "[who hammers out the metal]", also known as Prokoptas or Damastes (Δαμαστής) "subduer", was a rogue smith and bandit from Attica who physically attacked people by stretching them or cutting off their legs, so as to force them to fit the size of an iron bed. In general, when something is Procrustean, different lengths or sizes or properties are fitted to an arbitrary standard."
