Jonas Gardell named 'Swede of the Year'

Comedian and author Jonas Gardell was named 'Swede of the Year' on Thursday, following the success of his book 'Never Dry Tears Without Gloves' (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar) that chronicles the Aids epidemic in Sweden in the 1980s.

"My goal was to break the silence about HIV and Aids and I am overwhelmed by the response," Gardell told news magazine Fokus, which organizes Swede of the Year.
Previous award winners include Masoud and Shahnaz Garakoei for standing up against blackmail attempts by a criminal gang and Sven-Erik Bucht who turned the town Haparanda around after years of population decrease.
Other recipients include the singer Robyn, refugee rights activist Anita Dorazio and net activist Christopher Kullenberg.
