Swede loses her dog to wolf hunters

A woman from Stockholm on vacation in Dalarna, central Sweden, lost her dog over the Christmas period when a man mistook it for a wolf and shot it dead.

Hutch, 7, was a Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamut mix who usually lived with his owner in the Stockholm suburb Bandhagen.

On Wednesday, his owner let him roam around the Dalarna forests without his leash on. But the large, pale dog ran afoul of a neighbour, reports the tabloid Aftonbladet.

Hutch was shot in the head and died on the spot.

The family is now devastated while the man who shot the dog says he is still in shock.

"We have had problems with predators here. Bears, lynx and wolves that tear our animals to shreads," the shooter, a farmer in his 50s, told the paper.

"I deeply regret what happened."

He agreed to drive Hutch home to Stockholm where his owners will cremate him.

Why does someone with such poor eyesight, have the ability and license?

To carry and use a gun in Sweden?

Are the Swedish gun laws so lax it allows any idiot to carry a firearm ?

Once again the Swedish hunting fraternity exposes itself to ridicule.

If this moron cannot tell the difference between a dog and a wolf, he should have his licenses revoked and forfeit his weapons. He shoud also be prosecuted for shooting an endangered and protected species.

So the farmer is to blame, not the dog owner who let the dog roam the forest whilst she sat inside? The farmer had every right to shot the animal in the belief it was a wolf, for those who can't read or use google, the dog was a cross between 2 breeds that share many physical characteristics with wolves, so it's not like it was a pink poodle roaming the woods! The was an owner not looking after their dog whilst visiting the countryside, sad for the dog, the farmer has to live with the guilt of shooting a dog, because of a lazy owner.

A less honest farmer, would have just dug a hole for the dog and said nothing, he is clearly a honest guy, who shot the dog in genuine belief it was a wolf.

She was at fault for letting her dog roam free.

Here in Minnesota, Free gunning dogs, if they look like a wolf, fox or coyote, are at times shot. Free running dogs will chase and kill deer, turkeys, and other wild aminals, and kill them for "sport" as they have a full feed dish at home. I am sure the Swedish education system for dogs, and cats prevents this problem there.

Very simple #s 4 &5, you don't shoot if you don't know what you are shooting at. Better yet get rid of the Centre Party and their stupid attempt to buy votes by letting people shoot wolves and things like this don't happen. Or is it your religion that makes you hate dogs?

Love dogs. Don't always like the owners.

@Borilla and byke

Very plain and succinct.

Best replies here by far and have the common sense approach that eludes all the cretinous hunters that probably only want to kill for some twisted sexual feeling of gratification !!

Why would an owner let her dog roam free where there are wolves around anyway? How much does she cares about her dog! He could have been attacked as it was.

I feel bad for the farmer, it was an accident. He had had problems with wolves and hard for him to imagine that somebody would be so dumb to let their dog loose in wolf country.

all dogs are killing machines. if a dog comes on my property it will die. end of story. the dog owner in this case should be heavily fines and the shooter compensated.

its good to see the USA forcing dog owners to make their dogs urinate in the gutter or be fined. ditto dna testing for dog poo. Ive never seen anything like stockholm which is a giant dog urinal. standing on a train platform whilst a dog urinated on a food machine. every door way, pole, seat, building covered in dog wee. its disgusting but dog owners see no problem. I wonder how they would feel if I came around and urinted on their front door and all over the inside of their house.
