A robber was shot in the head by police on Friday after he and three others exchanged fire with officers in Södertälje, one hour south of Stockholm, after trying to rob a jewellery store in a shopping mall.

"We know that one of the robbers has been shot," Albin Näverberg at Södertälje police told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Speaking later with TV4, an officer leading the operation explained that the robber had been shot in the head.

He has since been taken to hospital, but the extent of his injuries remains unclear.

"He's sedated now," the officer told TV4.

Police received a call around 11.30am on Friday about an armed robbery at a jewellery store.

The local newspaper Länstidningen (LT) reported that several shots were fired.

Police confirm that they engaged in a shoot-out with four masked robbers.

"We were first told that three of them had gone into the store while a fourth stayed in the vehicle," said Sven-Erik Olsson, spokesman at Stockholm County police headquarters.

"Shots were exchanged between police and the perpetrators."

Olsson said police didn't know whether the robbers made off with any jewellery.

A witness told the TT news agency that the incident left bystanders shocked and in tears.

"I was on the escalator, about ten or 15 meters away and heard people screaming. The crashed through the display and started taking things," the witness said.

"It was so brutal. People were terrified."

No one else was injured in the incident and police have deployed a helicopter in their search for the perpetrators, who reportedly escaped in a silver Audi.

"It's a serious crime. We're putting a lot of resources into it," he told TT.

Later on Friday afternoon, police located the first getaway vehicle, explaining that the robbers likely switched to another car.

#1... at no point in that article does it say anything about non-Swedish or immigrants... you are just pointing baseless fingers with no proof.

It is wonderful that the police were able to shoot the man in the head, but why are they putting so many resources into the crime to find the other three? All they need to do is tell the man in the hospital that if he wants to live, he must tell them all the information and who did it. If he refuses to tell, torture him a little. That would save the police a lot of resources and the taxpayers a lot of money. After they capture the other three, they could kill him so that the taxpayers would not have to imprison such scum.

I completely agree with james7. It's a waste of money to search for them in a helicopter. They are clever and they will change car. That's a known fact. Just beat the person in hospital until he opens up. Anyway, they know each other put their photos on internet and people will recognize them. Just beat him as soon as he wakes. I am happy that none of the police had any injury.

Come on Guys, Please be fair. Why do Swedish people point the fingers and put the blame on immigrants when something like this happens? what if perpetrators are originally Swedish. Are you still going to put the blame on immigrants & refugees?

James 7, You are a troubled person. You have mental issues. Please go and seek medical help.

I don't think you are originally Swedish. I think you are from Russia & your family moved to this country about 30 years ago. Please let the pure Swedish express their opinion on such matters.

James 7. I don't think that you are a pure Swedish. you are probably from Russia and maybe your family moved to Sweden about 25 to 30 years ago. the Russian police used Kill prisoners after interrogations. This is Sweden not Russia man.

Please let the true Swedish express their opinion on such matters.

"at no point in that article does it say anything about non-Swedish or immigrants"

Hey, wake up! Don't you know the Swedish media go out of their way to avoid mentioning the ethnicity of suspects, even when such information is pertinent to the case?

I think the chace is more than even that the police did not shoot this guy between his BLUE eyes.

From a taxpayer perspective it would be advantagous if the shot proved fatal. Treating this guy in hospital is expensive, incarcerating him in one of the country's penitentiary hotels afterwards will cost even more.

Most likely this was an organised crime, most likely the robbers have foreign connections, at the same time, they could have been born here, to suggest Swedes dont commit crimes is just plain idiotic and a bit juvenile, may i add highly ignorant but you come to expect this sort of crass statement in here, good job by the police, why are they wasting resources when they have a perfect lead in the hospital

the total of 19 People who commented on this article Mr (Newsuper) made a new record not just being the first commentator but also making 6 new comment time.

Wow .. not just for this article but for every other article in this Locel.se.

what that is indicating is this guy is firstly, a Russian or member of former Soviet Union. So he is not Swedish.

Secondly, he has something wrong with other foreign immigrants like him and let me guess you are a racist and you want us the (Swedish people) to hate them (all non white immigrants) and be nice with you.

Thirdly : Let me guess you are unemployed since you have all the time to sit and wait to comment with same words (copy and paste).

you think swedish are fool, and we do not know how to govern ourself and also you think we are weak. and you are questioning our governments ability to lead our country. Excuse me M....Fa.. what you are doing why you are here. if you don't like us back home. or you will be get the same as this robber. do not F.. with ´Swedish police with your A-K47 FROM HOME.
