The former leader of Sweden's Left Party has died at the age of 77 after suffering from heart problems.

"I am deeply sorry about Lars Werner's death and my thoughts are with his family," said Jonas Sjöstedt, current leader of the Left Party.

"There are many of us who will miss him. Lars Werner was deeply rooted in the labour movement. He had a warm heart and strong sense of class. A large and loved political figure has left us."

Werner lead the Left Party for nearly two decades, between 1975 and 1993.

Sjöstedt's predecessor, Lars Ohly, tweeted on Saturday afternoon: "The Left Party is in mourning. Lars Werner is dead. And I have lost a support and a friend."

CH Hermansson, Left Party leader between 1964 and 1975, also reacted to Werner's death.

"I will miss Lars Werner terribly and am devastated after hearing the news. We worked together for many years to renew the party as a modern left movement. He was always very loyal and reliable," said Hermansson.

Werner, born in 1935, was trained as a mason and became chairman of the masons' union in 1972.

He was also a member of parliament between 1965 and 1994.

In the 1960s, Werner campaigned for the party, then known as the Swedish Communist Party, to become more independent of its Soviet counterpart.

It was under Werner's chairmanship in 1990 that the party changed names from the Communist Left Party (Vänsterpartiet kommunisterna) to the Left Party.

When Werner left the leadership post three years later, he was replaced by Gudrun Schyman.

Werner died around 5pm on Friday January 11th.

No doubt there are plenty of Stalinists and Bolsheviks left who are deeply sorry, even though they never showed any such feelings for the countless millions they sent to an early graves.

The Left/Communist Party is makes the Nazis look like Boy Scouts. They are the meaning of evil along with their buddies the Muslim Jihadist.

@johan rebel:

Did you even read the text? it was he who together with CH made the party independent from any kinds of Soviet-sympathiser, and of you read up a little about Swedish politics you would also know that the Left-Party is strictly Anti-Stalinist and Anti-Bolshevik, The Left-Party is a Marxist Party, not a Marxist-Leninist party, it´s a huge difference.

@Eric1:

You seem to forget the fact that the Left-party is non-religious, and it´s because of Palestine you call them Jihadists, then it´s clear you haven't read up on your conflict facts, The left Party supports the Palestine government (Like a Majority of the world dose! Which you would have known if you watched the UN vote about letting the Palestine government get a chair in the UN building!)

@Wotan9

What party in Sweden wanted Sweden to enter the war on the side of the Allies? (The Left Party did) And you obviously have never actually met a Socialist in your life, Socialists are to the very core Anti-Fascists, Anti-Nazis nd Anti-Racist, but i guess you are in denial because the US was the very last nation in the world to stop using black slaves, and was one of the very few nations who had "Race-laws". And guess what, the Left-Party held demonstrations against this...thats right, WE held demo´s against the US having race-laws! So dont you come here and proclaim that the left-party is racist!,

And if you Guys wanna talk about sick things, I guess (And hope You know who "Pol Pot" was...well guess what, who suported him? Did the we suport him? Did even Russia suport him? No! But who did? The US and UK did! Who invaded Cambodia and ripped him out of office? Was it the US? No! It was North-Vietnam! (Dont remember if it was after the Unification)

(How do i know this? Because i am Swedish and i do heavy studies in "Social-Studies", and also because i am a member of the "Young Left" and sits on the board of Värmland county)
