Minister calls for law on corporate gender equality

Sweden's equality minister Nyamko Sabuni has proposed a new law requiring companies to strive for a balance between women and men in the boardroom.

"The business community is not living up to its own agreement on gender quality. Therefore, we are now proposing a law which requires gender balance in corporate management teams," Sabuni wrote in the Dagens Nyheter daily on Saturday.

Sabuni explained that the Liberal Party would like to amend the law to require companies to set up and follow clear goals to encourage gender quality and combat discrimination, stopping short of direct quotas.

"I am against legally-stipulated quotas when some external person comes in a tells a company that they should have a women in their leadership," Sabuni said.

"The goals should be formed around the business operations, analysis and abilities. I don't see any problem with setting goals for how many competent women one should have among their management team, but it shouldn't come from me."

The proposal received some cautious backing from the Green Party, with Gunvor G Ericson calling it a "step in the right direction", while warning that "affirmative action is not a goal in itself, it is a means".

Representatives from business community groups have however been more critical of the proposal which has been described as "political interference".

"We can naturally not be positively disposed to a mandatory law. Absolutely not. It is a peculiar proposal," said Carina Lindefeldt at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise to the TT news agency.

"I have previously seen Sabuni as someone who clearly defends property rights, that the business leader has a right to govern and lead their own company. But now we suddenly see a political interference seeking to go in and change this."

Lindefeldt claimed that Swedish businesses already consider these issues important and work actively with addressing inequality among management teams.

According to statistics from March 2012, women accounted for 23.6 percent of board members of Swedish companies.

@ Snowtiger.

You keep posting all sorts of things all over the place about this woman, you have used words such as "you people", "remoras" etc...

I think it is time you directly say what problem you have with this woman or else shut up, she is a minister in your country and you must show her some respect.

Ok then remora, go get yourself some fruits!

Again, you exhibit the symptoms of a loser every time.

Replying to your moronic posts tends to make you feel better.

For me, all these talks about gender equality is a total BS. There is no way a p*ssy can be equal to a d*ck, unless we all become harmaphrodites

That's fine but let's also have a law requiring gender equality in university admissions. Or maybe forced equality only goes one way.

Ignore gender and just hire the best qualified person.

she was nearly as useful as the Enterprise Minister, neither are good adverts for Swedish woman taking roles of responsibility, as they both lack experience and ability.

Until Swedish lassies have some decent woman role models, none of the clever girls are going to aspire towards these kind of jobs.

hackie - genitalia have little relevance to corporate governance. The substantive point is that boardrooms are still male dominated, in the absence of any evidence showing that men actually perform better.

"The substantive point is that boardrooms are still male dominated, in the absence of any evidence showing that men actually perform better".

And how do you know that about evidence? Can you prove that women can do a better job than men? Here is what we know, most Nobel Prize winners are MEN! Now if you think you smart then prove it! Universities are open widely for you women just as much as it is to men...right? In fact, there are more women than men that going to universities in the western world, then what is your problem women? Why it always has to be this way, men this women that, we want this we want that? How about shut the hell up and let it happens naturally, how about? I'm sure those men in the boardrooms they have wives and daughters too, and i'm quite sure that those men want no less for their family members right? I mean we all have family members that are females right?
