Minister: immigrant 'volumes' too high

Published: 2 Feb 13 14:01 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/45968/20130202/

Sweden's immigration minister has told a newspaper that Sweden needs to tighten rules for asylum seekers and other would-be immigrants to reduce the number of people coming into the country.

"Today Sweden is one of the countries that receives the most immigrants in
the EU. That's not sustainable," Tobias Billström told the Saturday edition
of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

The minister's Moderate Party, a conservative group and the largest member of Sweden's centre-right coalition government, has tasked Billström with looking at ways to lower the "volumes" of immigrants entering the Scandinavian country, he said.

The party wants the country's immigration policy to remain "humane," he added.

Some of those applying for residency are covered by Sweden's maintenance requirement, which says applicants must be able to support themselves and have a home to be eligible.

But Billström claimed the policy only covered one percent of those applying for visas on family reunification grounds.

"Today, people are coming to households where the only income is support from the municipality. Is that reasonable?" he said.

The anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats said in a statement it welcomed Billström's "awakening."

"One thing is clear, the Sweden Democrats are influencing the debate in the right direction," it said.

The Sweden Democrats entered parliament in 2010 after winning 5.7 percent of the vote, and polls currently put its support at just under 10 percent.

The number of residence permits issued by Sweden rose to an all-time high last year, with refugees accounting for most of the 19 percent rise.

In total, Sweden received just under 44,000 asylum applications in 2012.

Only two European countries received more: France (60,000) and Germany (64,000), according to the Swedish Migration Board.

The number of Syrians seeking asylum rose 12-fold, and the agency said in December it expected to receive up to 18,000 Syrians this year.

Thank goodness for the SD, the other parties have not had any awakening, just scared of how fast they are losing votes for not acting on immigration in the first place.

How can swedish society support these people coming in and who will only ever claim state subsidies.

I do not want my tax payments wasted in this way
15:42 February 2, 2013 by Achilles7
18,000 Syrians this year! And that's not to mention all the other immigrants coming in. I know Sweden's a big country, but really, where do they put all these people?
16:00 February 2, 2013 by frenchviking
Finally a step in the right direction... It is important to help those in need but we have to be realistic and see that if we want to be able to help we need residents who work and pay tax, not residents who leave on benefits...

Sweden needs an immigration system similar to the one canada has... A point system to select people with the skills that will ensure they will find jobs and contribute...

And a small quota of people that need help and have no skills, but small enough so we can actually take care of them and give them skills so they become self sufficient. Then we can take more people in need...

I am not happy to see my tax money waisted on people who come here because it is easy to get free money...
16:23 February 2, 2013 by Rishonim
Last week I read in a Swedish entrepreneur magazine the story about two American entrepreneurs with money and innovation that got their visas denied. I guess Sweden doesn't need creative people on its shores as they need to make room for the other type of immigrants. The kind that suck the blood out of the system
16:37 February 2, 2013 by godnatt
Are you saying Sweden is a sovereign country and not a bottomless dumping ground obliged to support every unemployable, illiterate knuckle dragger in the world for life?

That's racist!
17:12 February 2, 2013 by Children Of Adam
In the short term it might not be good for swedish economy but in the long run Sweden benefits much from immigrants and their children who could be a strong work force, many countries encourages their citizen to give a birth and have more children but since the European girls do not like to have more kids , it is serious problem.

Many of these immigrants who get permit to stay are being used as "slave" and doing praktik jobs for many many years for almost free.
18:31 February 2, 2013 by Grokh
whoa DUH lol, even we immigrants are complaining at the unorganized overflow , and it seems just because everyone wants to be against the stupid SD then they keep bringing more.
19:36 February 2, 2013 by allnotmoney
after 3 years i am still looking for pety job and you are bringing more, more are going back home voluntarily
20:33 February 2, 2013 by muscle
i dont understand the logic of granting visas really :S they get highly skilled professionals and they will deny their visa.... i seriously don't get it why ? :S

Wow! Who woke this guy up?
21:29 February 2, 2013 by dekamikaze
No man, they are not waking up yet, they are just too doomb to come to their senses. They only wake when there's nothing left in sweden. When swedes are a minority in their own country. They hate their own people(the SD) so they destroy their own country...now if this is not ironic then what is?

How do you know there is an election aproaching?

-The politicians start pretending they are not insane :D Hehe, one time it was the FP with their languagetests. Last election it was M (and FP?) that pretended to be stricter than even SD. But its just lies. Things they tell when an election is aproaching.

This is just a minor hiccup for Sweden's quest to become an Islamic nation within the next twenty years.

And this is an unstoppable statistical fact!
11:43 February 3, 2013 by ahm
Its impossible to reform , cause you will not bring to your country skilled manpower uless you accept english in working environment and you must make swedish a social language not a business language .
11:47 February 3, 2013 by kaa977
This high intake of refugees is simply unsustainable for a small country like Sweden. These people are not ready to enter the job market outright because of the language and work skills and will need support from taxpayers. Cultural integration adds to the problem.

There should be a referendum asking citizens whether or not they support the current immigration policy. If Sweden needs more people, then it should introduce point-based immigration for skilled migrants similar to Australia and Canada.
11:55 February 3, 2013 by ahm
Its impossible to reform ,cause you will not bring skilled manpower unless you accept english in working environment .

Du dödar läkare och ingenjörer i Sverige GENOM ATT SÄTTA språk som grundläggande krav, slösar du vår tid för 1-2 år med SFI KURSER OCH FRI Praktik

at least private sector must allow English like NCC,SKANSKA ,ERICSSON ,,,,,etc

So , you must make swedish in social environment and only english accepted in working environment like Gulf state countries i.e DUBAI

I wonder what he means? is it making the life of those who work here from outside the EU as miserable as possibe to force them out or is to make sure that everyone is participating in creating a sustainable future for this country?

Personally I have been working here for almost two years now.. Not a pizza maker .. I have a nice office .. I develop electronics and I pay my taxes and permanent employment. Yet the regulations are so bloody tight already that the MV believes I have no right to stay because I didn't have a pension plan before 6 month ago :)

So .. What is this all about really?
18:17 February 3, 2013 by Mohnam
It's a long and painful story! Story of immigrants in Sweden.

As an immigrant, some times I think Swedish government is stupid OR super intelligent!

A country that does not have potential to digest immigrants, in terms of culture (first) and job market etc. SHOULD NOT let everyone come in. That's why I feel some stupidity!

However, if this is true, Sweden could not be such a developed country. This suggests existence of some smart plans behind the scene, covered by human rights or similar beautiful slogans.

I can not believe the government does not see what everyone sees! Sweden is being destroyed by immigrants. Please do not call me a racist, since I am myself an immigrant, but not that kind of immigrant who gets "easy money" from kommun!

And one more thing, in countries like ours (in my case, Iran) in order to make people silent, an idol is created by the government, GOD. What ever they do not like to be said, becomes against god. Then it is easy to smash people in the face.

In Sweden, this idol is "RACIST". As soon as you say reality, you are labeled as a racist!

Why are Swedes afraid of saying what immigrants are doing on their country? Of course, and as per of my experience, they say it in private after a long time when they feel safe. But when it comes to media, Swedes are scared to say, for instance, "there were 30 immigrants, who frighted on the street", and so on!
18:57 February 3, 2013 by rafa1981
Very well said.

BTW, the media aren't scared, your mistake here is to think that they are independent.
20:52 February 3, 2013 by cogito
#21.

+1. Sweden has a tame lackey media media because to get work in Sweden they have to go through the brain-washing factory known as journalisthögskolan (the state's journalism school).
00:18 February 4, 2013 by Cornelius Hamelberg
Advantage the Moderate Party!

I'm sure that the Sweden Democrats don't relish the Moderate Party showing muscle in that their special area, IMMIGRATION !

Conclusion : Just showing a little more no nonsense muscle in this area and the Moderate Party will effectively be stealing a lot of votes from the SD - will be stealing serious voters who (like me) feel that there should be a reasonable cap on immigration.

However, this smart move by Billström will not have a positive effect on the xenophobes and the outright racists who think that if you're not Swedish to the bootstraps, you don't have any right wanting to be here. They will still vote for the Party that would promise to deport refugees and immigrants already here back to the jungles where the lions could have them for diner, back to the war zones , poverty zones, homophobic zones, extreme Sharia zones or other zones in which the human spirit is crushed by human rights transgressions...
00:56 February 4, 2013 by dekamikaze
And very soon sweden will be in one of those zones...doombass!
04:49 February 4, 2013 by nathan45
Very good to hear the current immigration leval's are outragious!
08:00 February 4, 2013 by godnatt
The majority of people voting for SD just want something DONE about the immigration problem.

Swedes aren't suddenly right wingers, they just want someone to deal with the hard reality they are being forced to deal thanks to the wisdom of the multiculturalist media and elites who pontificate over the marvels of mass immigration over fikas with their white hipster friends in Soder.

If someone deals with it, whether the it's M under pressure from SD or SD itself, this is inevitable. Reality can only be suppressed for so long. Better sooner than later. A day of reckoning will come and it could get really ugly if left unchecked for a long time.

If you doubt that there are major problems with Sweden's policy in this area just look at the rape statistics. Are you more interested in impressing some faceless UN official, or protecting Swedish women?

Immigrant volumes too high in Sweden! What was your first clue?

Bud this didn't happen over night it's too late they are in now. What has been done will have lasting negative, irreversible effects.
10:42 February 5, 2013 by rise
Don't trust Mr Billström. The Swedish politicians hates the native Swedish population - they're showing it time and again. Their words are nothing, their actions everything.

If a world war (WWII) isn't enough to show that people in positions of power are not to be trusted - then what is? Do not vote according to their promises; vote according to their history.
10:56 February 5, 2013 by Scambaiter
Judging from the comments on this board, Sweden is a hotbed of prejudiced bigots.

Except of course half of you don't live in Sweden in the first place.

And the truth is that 90% of Sweden voted against SD, which is hardly surprising because most of them are white male thugs with roots in VAM and BSS ....and most of their supporters skulk around in cyberspace like chicken Breivik posting anonymous hateful comments.

Not to mention some people here seem to know the difference between an "immigrant" and an "asylum seeker". Dear oh dear..

To you racists and xenophobes who claim that crime and rape didn't exist in Sweden in "the good old days before Arab immigration".

Not likely, instead we had Sven Svenne in his stuga getting ratfaced on moonshine and then beating up his wife and kids. Paedophilia and homophobia didn't exist of course, back in the good old days...not. Nor murder, bank robbery, car theft, drug crimes, etc etc. Each and every Swede that has ever been born is a law-abiding citizen who never drinks and drives or fiddles his taxes.

SD claim that the "rape rate has gone up" but we all know that women are far more likely to report it that 20 years ago, and because the courts are far more likely to convict rapists, plus there is less stigma attached to being a rape victim. Of course, in the good old days when Pelle raped his wife it was filed under domestic abuse or kept under wraps.

Furthermore, reported violent crime has actually been going down in Sweden -- rather inconveniently --,although it gets far more publicity in the media of course...especially if the perpetrator is a foreigner. How convenient for the rabble rousers.

Remember John Hron?...beaten up by nazis = SD and dumped in a lake to drown. Or the African guy who had his head used as a football the same year...the list is endless.

PS...Notorious Swedish mass murderers, rapists and serial killers

Mattias Flink - worse mass murderer in Swedish history

John Ausonius - the original laserman

Helge Fossmö - psycho priest

Tomas Quick - alleged serial killer

Anders Eklund - serial killer

Jackie Arklöv - Balkan war criminal and police killer (adopted to Sweden as a 3-year-old)

Niklas Lindgren - Hagamannen, second worse serial rapist in Swedish history

Hampus Hellekant - neo-Nazi murderer

Peter Mangs - the Malmö laserman

Niklas Eliasson - the worst mass rapist in Swedish history

Surprise, surprise, not a single Muslim among them!

Im sorry to day buy he is right, a sad rality of what is going on , how many people are you willing to take in your home and support?
05:21 February 6, 2013 by dekamikaze
Wow, that nutjob can name all swede criminals, but I bet that he can't name even one foreigner criminal, because foreigner criminals have no names according to the fair and balance media. I wonder where the nutjob got those names from anyway? Oh wait, the MEDIA! Hey nutjob, I'm a foreigner here, and would vote for SD and some cases the SRM too. Oh BTW, don't count on that 90% for long!

why Sweden accept many arabian imigrants whitout school, others?Me with 17 years of school i was trying to come in Sweden sistem but whitout luck. This kind of people, denigrate Sweden...soon will be Arabian Sweden!
08:49 February 15, 2013 by salalah
Sweden has been very naïve in thinking that it will be "Business as Usual". I remember growing up in a society where everybody had a job. A Swede would be ashamed to receive assitsance and all the foreigners that were here, also shared the same ethics. Unfortunately, when someone comes from a country where you have to be corrupt to succeed, he will be very happy to see that here they are giving away stuff for free like education and healthcare. That person cannot share any workethic, because of difficulties of getting a job and also discrimination. With those factors combined, there is no other option or will for that person to get off benefits.
