New snow sends Swedish drivers skidding

Snow and slick roads made for treacherous driving in central Sweden, with a number of accidents leaving some major roadways blocked on Tuesday morning.

Two trucks crashed into one another on highway 55 near Aspö outside Strängnäs in central Sweden. Police report that one person may be trapped in one of the vehicles, with another person sustaining minor injuries.

The emergency response to the accident has brought traffic to a standstill in both directions near the scene of the crash.
Meanwhile, northbound lanes of the E4 motorway were also blocked following an accident overnight near Stavsjö north of Norrköping which resulted in two people being taken to hospital.
According to Swedish meteorology agency SMHI, there is a low pressure system over central Sweden that has resulted in snow showers in central and northern Sweden, with up to ten centimetres of snow expected in some areas on Tuesday.
"Temperatures are close to freezing in many areas, which means there is a risk roads will be slushy and slippery," SMHI meteorologist Therese Fougman told the TT news agency.

Route 56 south of Kungsör in central Sweden was partially blocked as well on Tuesday when a truck went into the ditch, and the E20 motorway remains blocked after a truck carrying potatoes skidded off the road north of Laxå, with police expecting the stoppage to continue for most of Tuesday.
Trucks also had a hard time staying on the roads in southern Sweden, with one skidding near the Fredriksberg interchange near Malmö, blocking traffic between E65 and E6.
