Total recall for Swedish horse-meat lasagne

Swedish food company Findus has recalled its frozen single-portion lasagne after samples were found to contain up to 90 percent horse meat.

Findus withdrew the 375 gramme product after its Luxembourg supplier, Comigel, warned that it contained a high percentage of horse meat.

However, the Swedish company assured customers the presence of horse meat did not pose a health hazard.

"We have been assured from the supplier that it is not a health risk for consumers. Had it been a risk, it would be another story" Henrik Nyberg, head of production at Findus in Sweden, told the TT news agency.

Meanwhile, the Findus product has caused a storm in the UK, where it has also been taken off the shelves, with Findus UK apologizing to customers.

"We understand this it is a very sensitive subject for consumers and we would like to reassure you we have reacted immediately" a spokesman told the AFP news agency.

Swedish customers with the product at home have been advised to return it, or to contact Findus online or by telephone.

The company stressed that only the 375 gramme frozen lasagne product contained horse meat, and that their other products had no connection to the horse meat at all.

and what's the problem with horse meat? nothing wrong with it...

I wonder which other manufacturers have the same problem?

@ robban70226

I think the major issue is that it wasn't declared on the ingredients, of course, this is illegal regardless what your view is on eating horse meat.

The great concern is the use of drugs fed to horses, which are not allowed to be used as meat for human consumption due to them being banned. And this is the real concern as drugs such as Phenylbutazone, which are often given to horses, can cause a whole lot of problems if ingesting horse meat containing such.

What is strange to see is the time delay to remove said products in Sweden.

Whereas other countries have taken action much faster.

When you eat processed food, you really never know what's in there.

Not that there is anything wrong with horse meat.

BBC reported it as some were found to be 100% horse meat

@robban70226 I think the problem is that it is advertised as beef so it is false advertising. Like you though, I think horse meat is actually quite nice.

The headline says Swedish horse-meat? A French manufacturer uses Swedish horses as lasagne ingredients?

Who cares what kind of meat it is anyway? Same difference to me. I'm a vegetarian.

@johan rebel

Congratulations on being a vegetarian..

Good job you don't need to have any anxieties about the food you eat compared to us horse munchers.

I'm pretty certain anything you eat would be labelled by the producers as genetically modified if it were. You can always trust producers implicitly when they are looking to increase their profits

Ah.. Who cares what kind of vegetables they are anyway.. Same difference to me. I'm a carnivore.
