Fake wheelchair man accused of conning carer

Published: 9 Feb 13 12:58 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/46098/20130209/

A 47-year-old man who went on holiday in Egypt while posing as handicapped in Sweden and claiming millions in benefits is now being prosecuted for stealing from his carer.

Swedish police obtained snaps of the man riding on camels, smoking a hookah pipe and climbing the pyramids during a 2009 holiday in Egypt.

At that point he had received help from a publicly funded personal carer for three years after telling Swedish doctors, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) and the Linköping municipality that he needed a wheelchair and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain disorder after traumatising experiences in Iraq, his home country.

The 47-year-old and his relatives are suspected of having swindled 5.2 million kronor ($806,000) from the Social Insurance Agency and the Linköping municipality between 2006 and 2012.

This week, the 47-year-old was also prosecuted over another fraud case. He is suspected of taking around 180,000 kronor from his daughter-in-law, money which she earned from working as his carer.

In May 2012, the woman, who was married to one of the man's sons for a short period, told police about the suspected cheating. She now lives with a protected identity.

"We have evidence that she was in Sweden when he withdrew the money with her card in Morocco," prosecutor Marianne Staaf told the Aftonbladet tabloid.

"I will press for a long prison sentence," added Staaf.

The court has called 21 witnesses, including neighbours who say they have seen the man moving about freely, without his wheelchair.

He is not the first 47-year-old man from the Östergötland region to have holidayed in Egypt while pretending to be wheelchair-bound and claiming millions in benefits.

In October 2012, the so-called "wheelchair man" was sentenced to four years in prison after swindling 13.5 million kronor from the Social Insurance Agency.

The original wheelchair man was also 47 years old and he too posed for holiday snaps in front of the pyramids in Egypt.

The 47-year-old currently on trial denies the charges.

They even employed one of his son's wife to take care of him and paid her salaries. This will certainly affect people who are in real need for such a service.

The funny thing is that this wife has been taken money (monthly paid salaries ) for all of this time knowing that she is part of a f## big lie and when things didn't work out well between her and the her husband family she screwed up for everyone by telling the media and officials! I can't understand these people. I just I can't!

My gratitude and good wishes to this entrepreneurial man and his helpers. The evil swedish state will not stop its jihad to exterminate each and every ethnic swede as long as it has any shred of power or legitimacy left.

Thanx to this man the state cannot spend this money on something evil. And will in fact have to go out and plunder the Swedes for even more money. Until something breaks and people truly had enough. We need many many more brave entrepreneurs just like him. He deserves all the best for his good service to us Swedes.

It is not suprising if he is from middle east /north Africa. They know how to take money from the state. Fake divorce.....why living together and the state is paying another apartment for the wife. That same apartment is being rented out. My friend has lived in such apartment. Faking illness is just one out of many ways.

He stole only a third of what the other guy stole, so he will probably get sentenced to 1/3 the time in the slammer. That's less than two years, probably. Too bad.

@Enjoyourlife

What kind of nonsense planet you are coming from?

If you categorize those people that way including your friend maybe you should start by "unfriending" him then, right? I've seen as many Swedes, south Americans and other people regardless of the ethnicity doing the same. Haven't you seen north-africans and middle-easterns who are doctors, entrepreneurs, government officials and more.. ? Don't make fun of yourself mate, seriously!

There is a true matter of percentage and figures that shows that a large majority of these guys aren't behaving well. But this can't hide the fact that there are good people among them.. Does this make any sense to you?

I don't see anywhere in this article that says he is an immigrant. Only that he holidayed in Egypt and withdrew money from Morocco (which could also have been a holiday) Or did the local change the article??
11:29 February 10, 2013 by Borilla
This is not so much a question of ethnicity, although there does seem to be a trend among immigrants. When your friend tells you that all you have to do is go to Sweden and tell them you have PTSD and they give you money, no wonder people are lined up. Of course, many of them get pushed out of the way by the SD's favorite "ethnic Swedes" who are also gaming the system. Come to think of it they get pushed out of the way by the SD politicians who are gaming the system don't they? Perhaps the answer is to change the system so that it takes more than just "telling" the authorities that you have PTSD and a bad back to get a few million crowns.
11:30 February 10, 2013 by insect
I cannot see where in the article it states that he is an immigrant. Withdrawing money from Morocco does not make you a citizen of that country. And it only mentions he holidayed in Egypt. Or did the local change the article already?

"I don't see anywhere in this article that says he is an immigrant." (#11 and 13)

@insect: Here's a hint:

"... after traumatising experiences in Iraq, his home country."
15:47 February 10, 2013 by InterceptorZone
@ Paddling Out

Unfortunately NOT.

But don't you think it is your duty as a citizen and the duty of your government to implement the appropriate tools that help select only the 5% who are good?

What is "voting" is made for?

Or are you scared to be called a "racist"?
