Uganda returns aid money to Sweden

Uganda has reimbursed Sweden some 24 million kronor ($3.75 million) in aid that had been misappropriated by senior officials.

"Uganda has indicated that the remaining sum was not misappropriated and has been used correctly. But before we relinquish our demand for full repayment we want an in-depth review of the remaining sum," Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Sida's director general, said.
The aid was initially destined for the Peace, Recovery and Development Programme for northern Uganda, established to rebuild the region after decades of conflict and devastation.
The programme received funds from Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
A guerrilla campaign was waged in Uganda between 1987 and 2006 by the Lord's Resistance Army, which became notorious for kidnapping children and forcing them to become child soldiers.
An investigation by the auditor general of Uganda last year found that a total of 86 million kronor in aid had been funnelled into private accounts linked to the prime minister's office in Kampala.
Petri Gornitzka said Sida was "now working intensively to try to find new ways to invest the refunded sum into the same area, but without going via the Ugandan state's financial system".
Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Ireland have all asked Uganda to return the aid. Oslo said Wednesday it had been refunded in full.

The former director of SIDA and later on Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, Bo Göransson used to preach occasionally in Daily Nation - against the endemic corruption.
The tragedy is that some of the unscrupulous Sub-human authorities make sure that the "food, medicine, and other things on an as needed basis" - and second hand clothes sometimes donated by charity organisations often wind up on sale in the local markets - for profit...
It's a well known problem that the Swedish Ministry International Development Cooperation and all conscientious Africans are well aware of and yes, the Swedish tax payers money should certainly not be wasted in funding "wabenzies "

The Light hasn't said that Uganda is not part of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Uganda is not Sub-Saharan Africa, but only a tiny part of it.
By the way, Greece is in a total economic disarray. Therefore we conclude that western Europe is in total Economic disarray.
I have posted the link above to inform you that there are countries in Sub-Saharan Africa whose GDP surmounts that of Sweden, so how do you expect such countries to need help from Sweden?
By the way, I understand that folks around here only open their eyes to what they wish to see.
Finally all this propaganda about Sub-Saharan Africa needs help is a deceptive lifestyle. Some/most of those countries are rich, they do not need Sweden's money but need good governance. I hope the events that will unfold soon proves this.

I have lived in Africa for the last 15 years and I can for sure say that the way of Africa is a corrupt and power hungry one(This is true for the Whole of Africa), Using the GDP as the definitive wealth or financial capability of a nation is not correct, it like saying that the strength of a currency IE: its exchange rate is a statement of Economic strength.
You should probably look at a more relevant source IE: The Quality of Life Index.
Now that we both agree that those countries may have a higher GDP than Sweden, I guess you can provide a suggestion to us then how you think "Sweden's Kroner" will improve lives over there.
Read my comment above, but I will reiterate here again that they don't need Money because they have enough.
They only need GOOD GOVERNANCE.
Thanks for the analysis and decent communication on your blog. As you have pointed out and I totally agreed with, but in addition, I want to add that the gross mismanagement of wealth has lead to the massive income gap between the rich and wealthy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Remember to advice the "donors" to keep their moneys as the people of Africa do not need such, beside such donations only FUEL CORRUPTION!!
Finally, we give cognizance to the Sub-Saharan African countries whose "purchasing power" and GDP surmounts those of their intending donors, and we stop referring to them as poor.
