Swedish schools may have served horsemeat

As food safety officials hold crisis talks in Sweden, it has emerged that lasagne containing horsemeat may have been served in Swedish schools and hospitals.

"The lasagne has been delivered to all sorts of customers, both within the public sector, like schools and hospitals, and to restaurants," Christina Gezelius, a spokeswoman for Swedish catering firm Martin & Servera, told the TT news agency.

The Swedish food wholesaler has ordered tests on samples from bulk lasagne shipments from Comigel, the French company that also produced frozen lasagne meals found to contain up to 99 percent horsemeat for Swedish food company Findus.

"We stopped sales on Friday as a precautionary measure. We've identified 80 customers from whom we will recall what's left out there," Martin & Servera marketing head Nils Berntsson told Svergies Radio (SR).

"It's totally unacceptable that we've ended up in this situation. Our customers must be able to trust the information we provide."

The meat was delivered to Comigel via the French meat handling company Spanghero, which, according to French media reports, falsified documents with information about the meat.

In France, food safety officials visited the Comigel and Spanghero plants on Monday, while the prime minister of Romania rejected accusations that slaughterhouses in the country were to blame for the growing scandal, saying "no irregularities" had been committed by the companies.

"We have made verifications...There exists no violation of European rules and standards" by the two abattoirs, Prime Minister Victor Ponta told a news conference.

Meanwhile, representatives from the food industry in Sweden were called to crisis talks with officials from the National Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) to discuss how to combat the scandal and prevent future meat fraud.

Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Eskil Erlandsson has said he thinks Findus should be reported to the police.

"We need to come down hard on things like this so that no one even considers putting something on the market that isn't what its list of ingredients indicates," he told the TT news agency.

Swedish grocery chains Ica, Axfood, and Coop also risk being reported to the police because they also sold lasagne from Comigel.

I have been to Sweden numerous times and I have eaten both Horse and Reindeer, in Sweden. It is just another source of protein, aka Meat.

Why are all the media trying to make a big deal about a bit of meat, if it were RAT, CAT, or DOG - then I could see it as objectionable as in Europe we don't eat such.

But fact is, we do eat Horse!

And all the so called 'Products' that have the horse meat (aka Protein) in it - to make it 'CHEAPER' were all sold in the lower end/Budget - Cheapest places to purchase food.

When someone has to choose between buying their 20 cigarettes a day (per adult and teen age children) and Aberdeen Angus Beef (cost 100 times more) - they will still buy the horse meat burgers and products.

Protein is Protein.

The media need to Stop making a storm in a tea cup when there are FAR more important Issues that are being Ignored - as in lack of job creation in the Western World.

Served in restaurants??? Can we have the names? No point going there if they just serve ready food for 5 times the price of the supermarket....

I don't see why the big hoopla about horse meat. To me if you eat pork you may as well eat horse, dogs, mole rats, crows, hyena, howl, bats and skunk ;-)))))))))

Jeez . . . this is supposed to be a scandal?

It is meat, who the heck cares what kind of meat? The offal that goes into factory- produced lasagne is minced beyond recognition, and then mixed with so many spices and E-numbers that the original flavor is obliterated. Anybody who willingly eats that stuff has no reason to complain or worry about what kind of animal the meat came from.

PLEASEEEEEE do not denigrate E Numbers - at least with an E number we know what the ''fit for human consumption ingredient' is!

IF Not for E number's we would have to GUESS what the bloody English call yellow number1 and green number 8 is.

with the E number's EVERONE in the EU or who trades (AND PAYS to trade in the EU) know what that ingredient is! What is if was called FD&C yellow number2 or by any of the other 20 names it has...

Trying to degrade E NUMBERs is WRONG- at least - NO matter where you are in the EU or a trading partner (EEA country - who pay for access to the free market with ZERO say in the rules and regulations) - we ALL know that E-xxx is xyz.

The "hoopla" is about the lie: the consumers were lied to. The packaging says one thing and the contents are another. What will they lie about next? Stick sugar in products that say sugar free and then diabetics eat it? Or cram nuts in a product labeled nut-free and some allergic person inadvertedly eats it? Lies can kill people. THAT'S what the hoopla is about. Then there is the question of fraud.

To the people who do not understand how serious this is.

Certain chemicals, for example tetrahydroxychalcone, are often fed to horses. Many of these chemicals remain in the food chain and are dangerous to humans. Trust me, you do not want a regular diet of tetrahydroxychalcone.

It seems reasonable to presume, the criminals who fed horses into the meat grinders, did not conduct chemical analysis of the meat, or ask for paperwork about its provenance.

If tetrahydroxychalcone is being eaten by Swedish children, or anyone else, then that is a very serious matter.

Do you understand now?
