Swede wins prestigious world photo award

A photo of Gazans taking two children and their father killed in an Israeli air strike for burial has won the 2013 World Press Photo award for Swedish photographer Paul Hansen, judges said Friday.

The staff shooter for the Dagens Nyheter daily took the image of the funeral procession carrying two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his three-year-old brother Muhammad down an alley in Gaza City on November 20, 2012.

"The strength of the pictures lies in the way it contrasts the anger and sorrow of the adults with the innocence of the children," said Mayu Mohanna, jury member from Peru. "It's a picture I will not forget."

The children's father Fouad was also killed in the air strike and their mother was put in intensive care.

AFP photographers Fabio Bucciarelli from Italy and Javier Manzano from the US won second and third prize in the Spot News category respectively with a series of photographs taken in Syria's battle-scarred Aleppo.

One of Bucciarelli's pictures shows a Free Syrian Army fighter standing on a rooftop preparing to fire a rocket-propelled grenade, while one of Manzano's photos shows rebel fighters in a dark room pierced by sunlight streaming in through bullet holes.

"I am happy that I and many of the other photographers, including Javier Manzano, won prizes for their work in Syria and that people can see more images from there," Turin-based Bucciarelli, 32, told AFP by telephone.

"I also want all the people to remember that there are some journalists who have died there for trying to cover the news," he said.

At least 20 journalists have been killed in Syria's civil war, according to a count by AFP and Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, while the UN says the overall death toll is nearing 70,000.

This year's World Press Photo competition saw judges sift through 103,481 photographs submitted by 5,666 photographers of 124 nationalities.

Top winner Hansen will be awarded a cash prize of 10,000 euros and a camera during a ceremony in Amsterdam in April.

Although tragic and painful to see those little kids rapped up for burial, I still wonder if he taken photographs of Israeli kids being carried for burial if he would have won the top price? Or Syrian kids for that matter? I think not. Attach the Palestinian name to any thing and guarantee the world will pay attention. Kill people in Israel, Congo and Syria and the world turn a blind eye and deaf ear.

Israel has become the country that it is fashionable to hate...

You two are pathetic.

" Kill people in Israel, Congo and Syria and the world turn a blind eye and deaf ear." the world has been turning a very blind eye to the dark goings on perpetrated by the state of Israel against the Palestinians for many, many years. You're deluding yourself if you think otherwise, but just to make sure, please list the current sanctions against israel in place by any european or north american nation (arab loony states don't count) for their constant flouting of UN resolutions or breaks in agreements.

This is a stunning picture from a purely photographic point of view - worth making the effort to see the larger version - and very sad from a humanitarian view. As a father, it doesn't matter what colour creed or faith a child is, it's always distressing to see their lights extinguished, and the anguish in their parents eyes. Those of us less full of hate and bile than you feel this when we see images of children from the ghettoes of poland 70 years ago, or the ghettoes of Palestine 7 years ago.

TG22, sadly for all concerned, hatred or criticism of israel is not a recent phenomenon, or was that merely a disingenuous, not to mention facile, comment?
16:22 February 15, 2013 by Avidror
To shard:

Even though what happened to those children and their father is painful, it's not as untrue as you think what Rishonim and TG22 have denounced. TG22's claim that "Israel has become the country that it is fashionable to hate" is true. It's a trending topic, it's the "cool" thing to do among many people.

In part this is understandable because people are subjected to media bias. In the U.S., as far as I'm concerned, the media is biased in favour of Israel. Here in Europe, or at least in many European countries, it's just the opposite. That is what explains many topics about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

For example, you mention U.N. resolutions allegedly violated by Israel. What the media hasn't told you (probably) is what Rishonim has implied above: there are many more U.N. resolutions concerning Israel than concerning the Congo, even though the Congo is at war since the 80s, and that war is the worst one in humanitarian terms since the Second World War.

That shows a political bias in U.N. resolutions.

Pretending to compare Israel's treatment of Palestinians with Nazi Germany's treatment of Jews is historically inaccurate and an insult to the people who suffered the Holocaust, indeed.
16:32 February 15, 2013 by calebian22
Yeap, shoot rockets into southern Israel trying to kill civilians. Not news. Israel strikes back and collateral damage occurs. Waaaa! The world cares. Don't attack Israel and this won't happen.
16:48 February 15, 2013 by TG22
When you use children as human shields eventually they will get killed...
17:22 February 15, 2013 by guliver
One picture is more valuable then 1000 words.

Sorry for the poor victims and their families.

As an Israeli citizen who live all his life along the border with Gazza, I have some things to say:

1.we bring our children to graveyard far away from the international Camera men ,we do not need them over in our sorrow moment.

2.Since the last Gaza operation we have a relative peacefull days in our cities[after 15 years of continuing bombing on our cities with deads and wounded among us.

3.the solution is not more wars but a political peace agreement a must between the political leaders

4.please leave the civilians out of the conflict in both sides
18:21 February 15, 2013 by shard
Avidror;

whilst it may be so that there are more resolutions against israel than the congo (I'll take your word for it, for the moment) you'll have surely noted that many of the resolutions, and certainly the most important, go back far, far longer than the eighties. It's a sad fact, but it is a fact. ok, so curiosity got the better of me, and even I was astonished to see how far they go back. Not all concerned Palestine, but I'm sure you know/knew that.

And there is no need to 'pretend' to compare the nazis treatment of the jews to israels treatment of palestinians, with the exception of the 'final solution' and the fact that war was waged against germany, it's truly sad to see the echoes across the decades. And you are right that the ability to draw such comparisons is an insult to the people who suffered in the holocaust, but for the wrong reasons. I cannot imagine many of the jews of the 1930's or 40's, famed then as now for their compassion as individuals, would be content to see the misery brought upon the heads of those alive today in modern palestine.

Calebian. Yeah, right. One israeli dies or is injured in *any* incident, and it's front page news. One palestinian dies, and it doesn't even make the 'other world news' section. Typical apologist fantasy, I'm afraid.

TG22 when everyone in the nation bears arms at some point in their life, they will all eventually be targets. Besides which, the israeli military is famed for using palestinian children as shields.

Guliver

1, if this was an israeli child or children, the first time you saw this image would NOT be on the local. Surely you realise that?

2 I'm happy for you that you have relative peace where you live. All civilians deserve that. Now, imagine how palestinian children must feel growing up with that day in day out from targeted missile attacks.

3 couldn't agree with you more, but sadly the current israeli govt shows no willingness to follow your thoughts.

4 absolutely right.

Shalom.

I do agree!

2.How Palestinians kids feel? horribile ,exactly as my children feel in Sderot,

3.yes .

yes Netanyaho with the right wing party did not do enough effort to bring the peace proccess forwards.

yes ,I do think Abu Mazen can be a partner

but Hannie and Hamas do not wish to recognize our right to exsist and to accept the 2 states solution, a problem to over come.

yes we had a very close chance to reach an agreement in camp david with Barak as Prime Minister and the Labour in office but Arafat walked away and Clinton said he did a big mistake.

I know our army ,I am sure the make any effort to save civilian life where ever it is possibile ,and it is hard as the terrorists hide among the poor civilians, therefore we did not go forwards this time with a land operation which could have lead to horribile unacceptable civilian causaulties
19:31 February 15, 2013 by TG22
" israeli military is famed for using palestinian children as shields."

By whom? Left-wings activists and Islamic terrorists?

"Now, imagine how palestinian children must feel growing up with that day in day out from targeted missile attacks. "

Well they only have Hamas to blame, their democratically elected leaders...
20:12 February 15, 2013 by johan rebel
"the fact that war was waged against germany" You mean wars of self-defense, I take it? If anybody ever asked for it, Nazi Germany did. They sure had it coming.

"when everyone in the nation bears arms at some point in their life, they will all eventually be targets" Are you really saying that it fine to kill any civilian who has ever served as a military conscript? Congratulations, you are a person of outstanding morals!
21:42 February 15, 2013 by Rishonim
There are kids getting blown up every day in Syria, Afghanistan and many parts of the world. Yet, they parents and family don't have time to pose for a Kodak minute as they have to run and dodge the bullets flying over their heads. The Palis are holding the world hostage with their choreographic posing and constant being the victims attitude. 70+K dead in Syria and rising. Yet, noone seems to care.

How about photos of anti-Jew cartoons in every Arab newspaper. The hatred for Jews and Christians in the Muslim world is unparalleled. Of course this doesn't fit the Israel hating leftist at the UN and Europe.
09:15 February 16, 2013 by RobinHood
An extremely powerful picture that reminds the world what collateral damage really means.

It's very interesting how the picture and the award have excited Israeli trolls on this forum. The picture is totally apoloitical. It is about the death of children, and the pain of their fathers and has no relationship to The Palestinian Question. Please be less troll-like and show a little more dignity.

Get back under the bridge and shut up. You are not wanted here.
09:39 February 16, 2013 by guliver
Dead children there are on both sides unfortuntly

and it terrified to see it all over

just oneside insist on his own civilian causulties ignoring the murdr of our children

Yes Robin Hood you have in Europe learnt that the blood of the Jews had no value

therefore you insist to show just the one side

The big problem is that Israel should never have been created, i can understand why the palestinians where uppset when their land was given away
17:15 February 18, 2013 by Avidror
To shard:

About the long-term Arab-Israeli conflict, that's the point. The Congo conflict inflicted more casualties than the Arab-Israeli conflict even being the latter much more long-termed. That's more people killed in less time.

And how can you compare Israel's treatment of Palestinians with Nazi Germany's treatment of Jews "with the exception of the 'final solution'"? The extermination of Jews by Germany and the lack of an extermination of Palestinians by Israel is precisely what makes a clear difference between Israel and the Third Reich.
19:35 February 19, 2013 by rohermoker
Stalin once said the death of one is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic. true peace is possible only in the cemetery.

To Unionisten

You have a big problem, we are here and won't move......but what I really wanted to ask you is what Land was taken from Palestinians, was there a country called Palestine? interesting who are the Palestinians people? who was their leader? president? PM? where was their parlement house?

Well you won't answers you won't have any thing to say beside the fact that your people made worng choice by ignoring the fact that jew and arabs what were living in the same erea could live in peace as it was before the declaration of the state of Israel, They could only get a better life......
10:46 February 22, 2013 by entry
That certainly is a dramatic photo. But my favorite Pallywood production is the video "The Living Dead- Palestine" where the guy pretending to be dead being carried during the funeral procession keeps being dropped to the ground and has to keep jumping back on to the litter and play dead again.
