Sweden hit by 'unusually low' temperatures

Temperatures in Sweden are ten degrees Celsius colder than usual at this time of year, with experts predicting that the "unusually low" thermometer readings are likely to stick around for the week.

Even though the calendar suggests that it's March, the thermometer is behaving like it's January.

The mercury dropped as low as -20C in Stockholm on Sunday night, and -22C in some parts of Dalarna in central Sweden. While these two areas were among the worst hit, the chill was felt across the whole country.

"Only Munka-Ljunby in north-western Skåne (southern Sweden) recorded higher then zero, but not by much - just 0.2C," wrote Sweden's weather agency SMHI on its website.

Experts have suggested that the winter chill wasn't just a one-off, either.

"We'll have below-freezing temperatures even during the day time for the whole week," Linnea Rehn, meteorologist at SMHI, told the TT news agency.

After the week is over, Rehn predicted that the weather should reflect something more like spring.

"It will be milder by then, especially in southern Sweden," she said.

it's crazy, winter temperatures last 2 weeks longer than the average, whatever next, earth stops spinning? Or perhaps seasons just vary at little bit, within the annual average for March, there will be the true median, but also the exceptions which go unmentioned, it's unlikely to be the warmest or coldest March ever, we are just experiencing variables within the norm.

Just another reason why living in Sweden incurs a lot more negatives than positives. It's -10 degree Celsius (named after Swede, don'r you know) and it's March!!

We'll I can't gripe about this place. Just need to leave. Nonetheless, I warn people do not come here. The winters are dark and long and the weather is consistently below 0 between October till April.

perhaps if you like skiing in any of it's forms, skating, ice fishing, snow mobiles, or just playing in the snow etc then Sweden IS the place to come?

Beautiful sunny clear blue skies, glistening white snow everywhere, skiing in to the forest straight out the back door!

How can you not love it? :)

#2 at the rate that Global Climate Change is accelerating, soon it won't matter where you move to. If it's dry, it will probably suffer from floods. If it's fertile, it will probably suffer from drought (the midwest US has been hit by a 3-year drought), if it's cold either it will be even colder or flip to too warm, etc...

Stll there are too many people who refuse to admit the occurence and prefer to call these crazy weather patterns as "coincidence" or "freak event".

How many decades of freak events are needed before people finally admit that they are not coincidences but have come to stay?

a 2 or 3 week cold spell into March in Scandinavia is hardly freak weather, although I do agree the climate in changing as a whole. Snow and sub zero temps in Sweden in March is very much within normal parameters.

It's called climate, karex.

karex,

Where did you get the idea the American Midwest is in a 3 year drought. In 2011 there were record floods in the the Missouri River watershed all the way from North Dakota to Missouri which includes the states of South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

But I do admire the way warmists have replaced "global warming" with "climate change."

What a great theory. No matter what happens: flood, drought, hot,or cold it's "climate change."

We've just had a drought DownUnda : for a whole week it didn't rain ..... so I guess that's micro-climate mini-change in action. It's so great these days when you can invent your own explanations and semantics, then call it science. In the old days we were stuck with saying that it was a week of good weather. Not anywhere near as interesting as now.

I don´t get people who come to Sweden and then complain about that its cold here. Do they go to the sea, and complain that it´s to wet? Or go to Sahara and complain about that its hot and sandy there? What did they expect? Everyone can take a look at a map, find Sweden in the Northen hemisphere and realize that it´s colder here than in many other countries. Why would that come as a surprise to anyone? It's weird... I don't mind cold weather, i rather have -10 C and sunny, than +5 C with wind and rain. It's not the temperatures thats the hardest thing to endure in the winters, it's the darkness. I love it that it's getting brighter and brighter every day. It's 17.45 and still bright outside!

Inland from Gävle it is minus 18 celsius this morning, the 15th March.

#8 The reason the term "climate change" is being used is because it is more accurate: it describes the phenomena, where "global warming" describes only one of the trigger mechanisms.

I guess the idea about a 3-year drought came from the several comments I have seen from local residents about recent snow storms in the US. These residents had been hoping that all the added snow melting would relieve the the 3-year drought...

Flooding is also not precipitation. You can have flooding happening hundreds of miles donstream from the actual source of the rainfall and it will be isolated in its effect. If there is a drought the flooding won't help relieve it. It will only drench the area immediately around the rivers.

#6 an isolated cold spell in March is not freak weather, that is true. However, it is closer to January temperatures instead of March. Still, not all that alarming if it's a one-off, but taken into context in the past 4-5 years or so one can start seeing a pattern emerging: 2 winters in a row with arctic-level temperatures, more recent flooding events, more frequent and stronger storms, etc...
