Is the Melodifestivalen voting system flawed?

With 22-year-old Robin Stjernberg set to represent Sweden at Eurovision in May, not everyone is toasting his success. Some Swedes are seething that the singer wasn't even the leading vote-getter in Sweden. Could the system be flawed?

There's a saying in Sweden: taste is like the buttocks - divided ('Smaken är som baken - delad').

The saying couldn't be more apt when it comes to Melodifestivalen, a six-week music extravaganza where millions tune in each Saturday night to select a representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.

For Saturday night's finalé, 4.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the spectacle, the most since 2006, according to SVT.

But reactions to the programme are fierce. People either staunchly defend the show in all its kitschy glory, or loathe it vehemently.

But love it or hate it, this year's final seconds of voting provided enough drama to keep even the haters talking as Sweden's leading vote-getter didn't even end up winning.

Stjernberg's emotional encore performance of You

Sundsvall resident and 17-year-old cross-dresser Yohio was pipped to the post by Robin and his pop song You, thanks to 50 percent of the result being determined by an international jury.

"Europe's not ready for me yet," a somewhat unshaken Yohio told reporters after the event.

If it was up to Sweden, Yohio would be in the spotlight in two months. But as Europe sent the vast majority of its votes anywhere but in Yohio's direction, Sweden will be represented by Robin.

Is that fair? Is the voting system a functioning one? Or should someone else have won, perhaps?

Or is the whole thing just a massive waste of time and money, thank you very much?

it works in benifit of the record companies that sponser it. The one and only year people were actually given 100% of the vote (not the tv clowns) Lordi won, but it was the fact that Lithunia came 2nd with a "song" which was just them saying "we are the winners of the eurovision" over and over (one of the best songs ever in the silly competition imo) frightened the hell out of the euromonkeys

"Europe's not ready for me yet. " Yohio

Too right mate. Sadly, Russian, Latin and Balkan TV's (the electrical variety) will not now be bombarded with beer cans thrown by half-drunk, pot-bellied homophobes disappointed to learn the tasty looking Swedish chick is not quite all she seems.

The entire Eurovision Contest is rigged and corrupted.

Germany won it exactly in the time where they were 90% on their way to withdraw completely (including truckloads of money) using the daughter of a high-end diplomat as figurehead.

If you look for fairness and honesty in ESC, you wont find it, watch something else.

I ditched it many years ago and miss nothing.

Neither of these songs was any good at all.

I can't believe this guy won. He's terrible... Can't remember words, can't hold a note, his voice is awful... Urgh... What an embarrassment.

It would've been great to have Yohio represent us.

When has it ever been about music? The only song I ever liked from all the years of it was the Norwegian/Irish song "Nocturne" which was stunningly beautiful..... no cross dressing, no Diva. No pretension. Just a performance of a haunting melody and beautiful simple lyrics.....

It's so un-Swedish to let an International jury have their say. I would've opted for a jury consisted of Swedish professional musicians. Don't know if the Swedes chose this voluntary of if ESC has this as a regulation.

If Yohio had won it would be another The Ark. There is nothing wrong with the Voting System. This year was the most exciting voting I have seen in the last few years. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire time. Robin will do greeat for Sweden. You is a brilliant song and will go down great.

As a long-time ex-pat resident of Sweden, I've never really "got" the schlager/Eurovision, to be honest. It's absolute rubbish music (though better than dansband), but as it's so popular I can't see the harm in it.

However, changing the voting system would be a mistake IMO. I mean, we live in a country where people watch Bingolotto/Postkod lotteriet, listen to aforementioned dansband musik and eat Kalles kaviar and saltlakris. No offence meant, but nuff said. Do Swedes really want to make themselves a laughing stock by allowing gemen man to choose the Swedish entry all by themselves?

Nor do have I anything whatsoever against 17-year-od crossdressers, quite the opposite, but did people vote for Tokio because he had a good song that could win Eurovision, or because he's pretty and/or to make a political statement?

IMO Yohio definitely had a better song than Robin. When he said "Europe is not ready for me yet", that certainly made him stand out as a true winner. I hope he will enjoy a good career in music, the kid certainly has talent and the creativity to accompany that!

the cross dresser didnt wind because its been DONE so many times its boring...firs tit was Dana international, then we had Charlie for Sweden, then we had the pop-opera crossdresser, enough, its just boring now.. Bring back artists like Papa Bendi to the eurovision, real euro artists

Yeah @Beavis, 'cause a chubby idol popstar dressed in his uncle's suit is completeely groundbreaking and original. Give me a break. The other kid at least has charisma.
