Swingers' club record push goes up in flames

A swingers' club in eastern Sweden has been forced to abandon its attempt to set a new Swedish record after a fire destroyed the building that housed the "erotic oasis".

"I feel empty inside," one of the hostesses from Club Adam & Eva told The Local.

"There are no words to describe the loss. It's unreal."

The club, located about 160 kilometres southwest of Stockholm in Norrköping, has a registry with around 2,000 names and was set to celebrate its 15th anniversary next weekend.

More than 200 people had signed up to partake in the festivities, which were to feature a 30 square-metre bed and an attempt to set the Swedish record for "group sex", the Nyheter24 news website reported.

"I hope for a huge pile [of people]. That would be cool to see," the head of the club told Nyheter24 last week.

But the steaming hot party has been put on ice after a fire gutted Blå Huset ('The Blue House'), the 400-square metre building near Norrköping harbour which housed the famed swingers' club as well as a number of other businesses and associations.

"It was a huge fire. The fire brigade is still extinguishing it and it appears as if the entire building has burned down," Lars-Göran Nilseryd of the Östergötland police told the news site.

Police didn't believe anyone was inside at the time of the fire, which was reported at 11pm on Sunday night.

An investigation is underway to determine whether or not the devastating blaze was intentionally set, although the head of Club Adam & Eva doubted the swingers' club had been the target of an arson attack.

"We're in the basement and the fire started on the top floor," he told Nyheter24, adding that the loss was "devastating" as insurance wouldn't be enough to cover the extensive losses.

"It's just awful. The club is gone. The whole place has burned to the ground."

Distraught Club Adam & Eva members expressed their disappointment upon hearing news that the club and its 15th anniversary party had gone up in smoke.

"I'm going to miss the cellar and all the great people you meet down there," wrote one member.

"My husband and I had planned on heading there this weekend for some nice sex with other couples. But that plan went belly up," wrote another.

Some speculated the fire was intentionally set, but promised to do their part to ensure the club lived on.

"This isn't going to stop us swingers," one member wrote.

"We will be back."

Yet another member suggested the club should change its name to "Phoenix" because it "will rise from the ashes and be twice as good".

The hostess, who has worked at the club for four years and is one of about a dozen or so who help the club operate, said the club and it's members were "like a family".

"It's like a second home for many. It meant a lot to us all and it's really tough to have this happen," she told The Local.
