Two drown after high-speed police chase

Two suspected petrol thieves have died after a high-speed police chase on Monday night ended with them driving their car off a bridge that was open for boat traffic, and into the icy waters below.

The owner of a petrol station in Uppsala, eastern Sweden, called police to report a vehicle had left without paying.

Police subsequently took up the chase after spotting the car on a highway soon after midnight.

The two people, whose identities and gender remain unknown, led the police at high speed through Enköping and further south towards Strängnäs - about 30 kilometres west of Stockholm.

In an effort to stop the thieves, police called ahead to operators at the Hjulstabron bridge, a 520 metre long drawbridge that was open at the time for passing boats, and demanded that they close the entrance.

But the thieves either didn't slow down in time, or decided to crash through the barricades in an escape effort, and then drove off the open bridge and into the icy water below.

The bodies of the two thieves were found by divers in the early hours of Tuesday morning. They were stuck inside their car and had drowned.

By Tuesday morning, the car had been removed from the waters of the Hjulstafjärden and the bridge was opened to traffic again.

Good work from the Swedish police for a change. They solved the crime and prevented the criminals from committing other crimes ever again without wasting large amount of tax money on trials and lawsuits. This couldn't have been dealt with better.

Unnecessary death. The police should exercise good common sense when it comes to these soft crimes. I have seeing them in action. They are bunch of reckless idiots. They would drive 200Km an hour endangering the lives of pedestrians just to apprehend two teenage kids doing 60 in a 50 kilometres an hour area. They. the police, would rather the chase resulted in the death of the kids than to let them get away with a speed violation. Every gas station in Sweden is equipped with CCTV cameras which capture the vehicle, license plates as well as a picture of driver. The only think they had to do was to report it to the police and they would have been caught within hours.

#7 Rishonim. The police finally get something right and you claim they erred. One would suspect that you would be one of the first ones complaining about the police failure to follow-up, or even investigate, what you describe as "soft crimes". Who appointed you as arbiter of which laws should be enforced and which should not be? Should the police call you first before they respond to a complaint to find out if they should enforce the law? Theft and fleeing the police. Why didn't these idiots stop when they saw the flashing lights behind them. That would have prevented the incident. Why didn't they stop for the bridge barricade? That would have prevented the incident. I repeat - Darwin at work cleaning up the gene pool.

In the Netherlands last year, police created an artificial traffic jam on the highway in order to stop two gasoline thieves. The thieves crashed into the jam killing a person in one of the halted cars.

This case could have ended similarly, caused by disproportional actions of the police. All for a few gallons of gasoline.
16:59 March 12, 2013 by Rishonim
@Borilla, of course they erred. The police should have used better judgement. It is not about doing justice but rather doing the right thing... They would have caught them. Here in Sweden you just have to send a text message with a car license plate number and in a second you get the information on the owner of the vehicle. Two people died! For what? a couple hundred kronor worth of petrol? driving like madmen endangering the lives of other motorist and pedestrians?? For what? to boost their adrenaline protruding ego?.. And of course taking off without paying for a few litres of petrol is a soft crime compared to other more violent incidents....
19:46 March 12, 2013 by elsacr88
@ Rishonim, did you find out if these drivers were kids or adults?

Someone claims that the kids that were driving 60 km an hour in a 50 km zone were the same kids that drowned. Is that what you meant in your writing? I could not see that. But please, explain. Thanks.
19:57 March 12, 2013 by Abe L
@Rishonism, Please stop refering to these criminals as persons. It's common knowledge that such crimes result in police chases with an extremely high chance of getting caught and/or injured. This is a perfect way of showing that crime doesn't pay and that trying to get away with stealing a few gallons of gas doesn't go unpunished and can get you killed. This is exactly the type of message that all the small criminals in Sweden need in order to discourage them from any further crimes. I for one am very pleased with the fact that the police took proper action and prevented these criminals from causing any further harm to society. This is also what I expect the policy to be doing rather then eating donuts and writing bs speeding tickets while having their salary payed by YOUR tax money.

Wow..I'm really shocked! I live in Holland and I always thought of Sweden as a civil country and an example for the rest of the world...but to catch these thieves with such a drastic measure is beyond my imagination. But what really shocked me are some of the reactions here. People who say that these thieves got what they deserved. DESERVED!!!! How can someone say that?!?! Deserving to die because they stole 50 bucks worth of gasoline?!?! Damn...If these sentiments are even in Swedennow, than I really fear for the world.

Don't get me wrong...every crime should be punishable. But this is out of proportions to say the least.
07:10 March 13, 2013 by Migga
@Radiohead

The police didn't push them off the road, they drove off themselves. It's a sad accident but the police shouldn't be blamed. They sure didn't deserve to die, they should have been caught and punished.

You do know that most on here aren't Swedes or living in Sweden? If you don't think Sweden is a civil country based on this one case and a few comments then it says more about you then anything.
10:25 March 13, 2013 by Rishonim
@Radiohead, Indeed, it is shocking people will think those kids deserved to die for a few bucks worth of petrol. Yet, I have to agree with Migga. The people exuding those sentiments are not Swedes. Probably Australians, Canadians, Brits etc.

The steady hiking of Bensin prices in Sweden has made it an attractive commodity for thieves. Last year I spent over 30,000 SEK just on gas. I have been offered half priced gas by way of roadside transfer .. that's right, a hose from one car to another. Of course the seller is filling up somewhere for free. That's easy money for the perps.

I'm not saying the unfortunate stiffs were doing that. But thieves will risk more for a bigger return. My point is when things get too expensive they become black market attractions like smokes, booze, labour and now gas. Heya Sveriya.

I find it amazing that people are so naive. When people steal petrol they have nearly always stolen the car beforehand. The police are aware of this. If police don't chase people who steal then it is free for all. If your car has just been stolen, you have probably just been burgled to steal the car keys. So, these people who initially only stolen a few quid of fuel have also violated your home. Should they now be caught and punished, or should they be allowed to continue. Those that say 'CCTV sill have their numberplate' - who does that help. It doesn't identify them, it just says who's car has been stolen.

No wonder police get a bad reputation. The world is full of people who live in la la land and cry foul when they are victims.

So shocking to read news like this happening in Sweden. But been a South African whetrher the Gas Stations in Sweden CCTVs the bottom line is " THE POLICE DID A GOOD JOB ". You cannot afford to have people who are not Swedes commiting this crimes in Sweden ebven when we visit Sweden they treat us so bad that you wonder just because someone got a Swedish Passport does it give him the right to insult me?

It is about time people should be grateful that they live in a decent Country should keep it that way not copy scenes in the movies.
