'Those who don't have a right to stay must leave'

While admitting there were questions about methods used by police in Stockholm that some labelled as "racial profiling", Justice Minister Beatrice Ask nevertheless defended the need to carry out deportations.

"Police should follow existing rules and laws. But those who don't have a right to stay need to leave the country," Ask said in a parliamentary debate on Tuesday.

Stockholm police have come in for criticism for targeting "foreign-looking" commuters on the city's public transit system in an effort to track down and deport illegal immigrants.

The efforts have been carried out under the so-called Reva project, which stands for Rättssäkert och effektivt verkställighetsarbete (Legal and effective execution of policy).

Last week, Stockholm border police said they would stop asking commuters for identification, but Ask emphasized the importance of carrying out deportation orders.

"Sweden is one of the countries in Europe that accepts the highest number of asylum seekers and that gives the most people protection from violence and persecution," she said.

"For that to be possible in the long term, people who have gone through a judicial review and been found not to be in need of protection need to leave the country."

In response, Social Democrat Sara Karlsson questioned whether police should prioritize deportations when their clearance rate was so low for many serious crimes.

"At this point, the government is pushing the police to prioritize deportations, and that's totally inappropriate," she said during the Riksdag debate.

"There are many people who have told of being stopped because of their appearance. That's racial profiling, discrimination plain and simple. It's not only unpleasant, it's illegal."

Ali Esbati of the Left Party asked whether the government should be held accountable for how people who happened to have darker skin are treated by police.

Ask responded by explaining that people shouldn't be subject to ID checks simply because they are brown-eyed or "speak oddly, that's to say, not Swedish" but that border police have now stopped carrying out such checks in the Stockholm metro.

"But when a decision is taken those who don't have reason to stay must go home, no matter how difficult it is. Otherwise we won't have the ability to take care of those who have the right to stay," the justice minister said.

@Rishonim

changing laws will not keep "unwanted people" from entering Sweden. People just walk across the border anywhere they want...or drive across the bridge. One would have to build a big wall around the country and put armed guards up everywhere. Nobody wants that.

Thank God that I dont look like immigrant, but I am actually an immigrant.

The current government policy is no less than other racist party ( sverige democrat) toward non swedes, the stopped international students, would allow to check dark skinned humans. Why they dont just say we are also racists ?

Most of these immigrants are victims of unprofessional lawyers which the immigration provides them and they would do what immigrations tells them coz they are getting paid and would not go against the well of their milky cow. it is the business nature.

It's about time Sweden drops this Politically Correctness mambo-jambo and do what it must to ensure the country doesn't become another hellhole. If this offends people, well so be it... Malmo is already close to the non-return point, so they have to act before too late...

They caught huge numbers of people during the tunnelbana searches so whats the problem

99 % of illegal immigrants do not look like blond haired blue eyed swedes so police time os best spent checking the most likely looking people

She is the first government official speaking about this topic that I have heard making any sense! Good for Beatrice Ask!

@ Where did you get your stats from? As far as I know, there are a lot of dark skinned people living legally in Sweden. I personally know of 4 blonde Ukrainians living illegally in Sweden. So why should they get preference over others and not being checked by the police because of their skin-color? And why should everyone pay the same tax money then get different treatment? If Sweden want to implement apartheid than start first changing the laws and let's the world see the truth face of the majority living here.

By the way, thanks to those who got the courage to expose this devilish work to the general public.

I wouldn't mind getting checked and laugh at the cops face because i am a legal alien. i already did made fun of them when i enter the country and a officer checked me because i was "dark" skin and had a argentinean pass. i passed him both my swedish and spanish residentships, laugh and said you can check both of them like they did in england a year ago when i came in with my argentinean pass. then again is a measure used from time to time in all countries like the us, canada and other countries in europe... what's the big deal?
