Mink farm attacked by animal rights group

Around 50 protesters broke into a mink farm in Tomelilla in southern Sweden on Saturday afternoon, interfering with cages and disturbing the mating minks.

"They shook the cages to bother and scare the minks who are at the moment busy in the mating season and also harassed the farmer," said Peter Martinsson at Skåne police to the TT news agency.

The protest is reported to have been carried out by the animal rights group Djurrättsalliansen, an activist group that seeks the closure of the six remaining mink farms in the region.

The group have however flatly denied that they took part in the attack and the allegations of harassment by the farmer.

The attack comes shortly after a farmer in Skaraborg was threatened with an axe when he submitted an application to open a mink farm.

Djurrättsalliansen declared on its homepage that "the struggle to close Skåne's six remaining mink farms continues" and has a post celebrating the closure of a farm in Svedala.

The group argued that the "time for talk is over" and that the animals need treatment, calling for end to the fur industry in Sweden.

"The fur industry has had over 20 years to conform to animal protection legislation and study after study has shown that they haven't addressed the animals' serious behavioural problems," the group claimed.

It sickens me that the fur farmer is so flatly lying, not only to the media but also to the police. Djurrättsalliansen filmed their actions in detail and the film evidence corroborates their side of the story and proves the farmer to be nothing but a liar.

Does he think he's going to scare people of conscious away by making himself look like an idiot?

I remember a bunch of these nutjobs "liberated" a mink farm back in my home country (England). They did the intelligent thing of releasing 7000 of these predators directly into the local habitat (The New Forest National Park). Of course the overjoyed mink went on to decimate the local animal population (some of which were already endangered).

It's so funny that the fur-farmers are trying to play the victim card by saying "they shook the cages and distressed the minks!!!"

Maybe I'm being presumptuous.....but aren't the fur-farmers planning to do much more horrific things to these little animals?

@Corvinus same thing happened in Ireland, idiots released the minks which almost made the req squirell and other animals extinct, far more animals died as a result

Animals exist in their own right, each one an individual with dignity, uniqueness and inherent worth. We need to stop confining them and to work together to release them to their native habitats. Other-than-human animals have and continue to be a chronically vulnerable population. Their pain and suffering through humans in intolerable. We must all peacefully rise up and end their misery.

It is wrong to keep an active animal in a tiny cage for its whole life.

anyone here eat chicken or fish, I bet they suffer mor?. Don't forget all fish you eat suffocate to death, but because they aren't like our 4 legged fellow land mammals, we don't think of them in the same way?

Personally I don't agree with farming an animal just for fur, there are plenty of alternatives, where we can also use the meat, plus also give an animal a meaningful life at the same time.

There are escaped/released mink running free in Sweden too.

@ expressingAnOpinion, come down to earth & take a bite of reality. A majority of animals do not have native habitats, they have been destroyed, mainly by people planting crops to feed non meat eaters.

@engagebrain, lots of active animals kept in tiny cells in jails all around the world!!

"they have been destroyed, mainly by people planting crops to feed non meat eaters."

That's simply not true.

The land and resource consumption of breeding and raising animals for the meat industry is exponentially higher than that of fruit and veg produced for human consumption.
