A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting another man in connection with a far-right demonstration in Gävle in northern Sweden on Saturday.

The man is reported to have been seriously assaulted by neo-Nazis taking part in the demonstration by the Swedish Resistance Movement (Svenska motståndsrörelsen - SMR)) on Stortorget in the centre of the town.

Eye witnesses have reported how demonstrators punched and kicked the man, as well as assaulting him in the stomach with their banners.

The tumult began when a woman spectator started to film the demonstration and one of the demonstrators seized her mobile phone. When a man entered the fray to help the woman, the assault was then directed towards him.

The police used pepper spray to break up the melee and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

On their homepage the Swedish Resistance Movement claimed the punch up was caused by "anti-fascists" who had gathered to disturb their demonstration.

The SMR themselves named the arrested man as Pär Sjögren and stated that several members of their group tried to prevent the arrest using violence, giving up when the police used "tear gas" against them.

The Swedish Resistance Movement is recognised as one of the key members of the white power movement in Sweden and their publication material openly praises the life of Adolf Hitler.

These Nazis are worst than brain washed terrorists. They are more extremists than terrorists networks. I am afraid of groups like these Racists, al-queda and big financial groups. They really mess up the peace of this world.

@liondens

Immigrants are mostly blamed for the crimes Swedes make, so do not be worry about mentioning name.

Disgusting to see these extreme groups, right and left, go at it. They should keep their views and violence away from the public room. Laughable that The Local names this person that has just been arrested but doesn`t do so in other cases.

So when a Swedish commits a crime, in the name of "good journalism" they show the name, however when the culprit is an immigrant, specially if a member of the religion of peaces, in the name of the same "good journalism" they only say "youths". I see...

They attack a non violent spectator, then try to prevent the police making an arrest and only one person gets carted off.

@liondens and Migga

Did you actually read the article? The name is not revealed by police or the responsible journalists! It is mentioned by the group itself! Even in this case, many Swedish medias avoided mentioning his name! Interesting you cannot or you do not want to see the difference!

It was calm until the so called "anti-fascists" showed up and started messing with SMR...

but like always blame the ones that want a better Sweden for it ;)

and yes, i was there, i was eating at mcdonald's

@Iraniboy

Doesn`t matter if they did, The Local shouldn`t publish it if they want to be considerd objective. There is a difference, you see that right?

@Migga

At least we agree that there is a difference! The local didn't have access to names in previous cases simply because Swedish police and justice system do not reveal names. But this time they had and they chose to reveal it. Other Swedish media didn't choose to publish this time either.

@liondens

From reading your comments I bet you had believed in 72 virgin if you happen to be born somewhere in the Middle East. But you didn't so you believe in the equivalent of it in your area! Sadly geography forms your mind not your gray cells!

liondens wrote -How do you know that they were "non violent"

This refers to the spectators who were attacked - as clearly described in The Local's article. Are you saying this is wrong or were you just throwing mud around ?

C'mon, guys. The Local reported: "The tumult began when a woman spectator started to film the demonstration and one of the demonstrators seized her mobile phone. When a man entered the fray to help the woman, the assault was then directed towards him." Does anyone have information to the contrary?

I am just as concerned as the next person about political correctness. I also think that in the name of a twisted notion of fairness and tolerance the media do not judge all cultures by the same standard. The media pretend that extremists practicing Islam are not extremists. But let's judge each report on its merits. The information that we do have about this particular incident is that the neo Nazis were in the wrong. Unless someone has information to the contrary, let's not jump to conclusions to the contrary.
