Horsemeat lasagne sent to Stockholm's homeless

Several tonnes of frozen lasagne pulled from store shelves in Sweden because it contained horsemeat will be donated to Stockholm's homeless population by Swedish food retailer Axfood.

Axfood, one of several Swedish retailers affected by the horsemeat scandal, announced on Tuesday it was donating around five tonnes of frozen lasagne to the St. Clara church in Stockholm which will in turn distribute the food to the city's homeless population.

"Many have reacted that huge amounts of edible food would be thrown away," Axfood said in a statement.

"But it wasn't clear that it would be possible to give it away."

Now Sweden's National Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) has given the project the green light, telling Axfood it has no objections to the company donating the lasagne.

The only condition, according to the agency is that it be "removed from its packaging and that there is an accurate list of ingredients available where the product is distributed".

The first deliveries of the horsemeat lasagne are expected to arrive at St. Clara church on Friday, March 22nd. The church distributes food to the homeless daily at Sergels torg square in central Stockholm.

Back in February, Axfood was one of several Swedish food retailers who opted to withdraw frozen single-portion lasagne from stores after horsemeat was found in lasagne produced by Findus.

It is very much agood thing to give this food to the poor broken down people. Thay will no care that it is a horse thay are just happy not to die. In my country we just let them to die. It is more human to give them animal food like this.

Now this is a very interesting twist to the story. Not sure how I feel about it. Have they determined that this food is not tainted with dangerous chemicals? Is it a PR stunt and if so, could it backfire? What are the costs of disposal vs the costs of donating it - is it a thinly disguised cost-saving measure? What has Axfood done for the homeless in the past?

If it is deemed inappropriate for one part of society to eat the meat, why is it thought to be ok to make others eat it? Surely that creates a two-tier society where some are thought to be 'too good' for certain things whereas others have to put up with what they are given.

homeless - in fact to anyone who wants it - there is nothing wrong with horse meat - French have eaten it for years. Its only a problem when products are miss sold especially to those with life beliefs such as religion etc. Throwing it is a bigger crime in one sense than miss selling. Food being thrown should be against the law and poverty and hunger should not exist.

You wont believe it but some Mexicans like to eat mules.

@aquamalaria

we already have a two-tiered society. We have those people who work hard every day and buy there own food, and we have those people who are too lazy and sit around waiting for someone to give them food. If the lazy ones want to eat something better, let them work and buy it for themselves. If not, let them eat horses and monkeys and garbage and things that normal people wont touch.

Horsemeat is NOT safe to eat, especially when it is illegally added to beef and unknown in origin! Obviously it wasn't tested. Horses primarily are not food animals and are routinely given many drugs and treatments that are never allowed in food animals. They are converted to food by the stroke of a pen by the greed and corruption of men. Might as well be eating a lab rat. perhaps they are attempting to kill off the poor. please read; http://rtfitchauthor.com/tag/ann-marini/ and

i think the point of this whole horse meat saga has been terribly missed by all quarters... everyone is focusing on the content- the horse... and not the process by how it got there...

Manufacturers such as Findus, and Ikea... who else was involved in this globally? Burger King... there should be a list created... all of these companies are guilty of purchasing such low grades of meat that they have no control over the content... what if it's not horse, but beef that is really really old, or bits of cow brain and offal and tails and cr*p that is ground up really fine and added to the little good meat?

My point is that all of these producers are guilty of misrepresenting their meat. They and any others should be blacklisted and boycotted until they are out of business. I hope anyone continuing to consume Ikea meatballs (imagine what's in their korvs!) or Findus tv dinners or BK whoppers enjoys them because likelihood is they're STILL cutting costs on their meat, and that is the point.

They are still discovering what is actually in that horsemeat - DRUGS - not allowed in food! http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/fmcg/horsemeat-veterinary-drugs-found-in-polish-beef-samples/237749.article
