71-year-old handed ten year sentence for murder

A 71-year-old man has been sentenced by Huddinge district court to ten years in prison for the murder of a man six years his junior in the Stockholm suburb of Fittja.

On the night of May 22nd the two men had arranged to meet behind the local transformer station to discuss money.
Shortly before their meeting the 65-year-old man had made 2 million kronor in a property deal.
According to the court, gaining access to this money was the motive when the older man killed his friend by beating him over the head with a blunt object.
The 71-year-old admits to meeting his friend behind the transformer station but claims to have left him for a short period.
When he returned, his friend lay dead on the ground. According to his version, a group of men suddenly showed up and killed his firend.
The district court found that the defendant's account was not credible. A forensic analysis of the man's car produced evidence tying him to the murder.
The crime of murder usually leads to a life sentence or 10 years. When deciding on the shorter prison term the court took into account the man's age and failing health .
