A 44-year-old woman is suspected of having set fire to the bed she shared with her 28-year-old girlfriend after she found the younger woman having sex with a male acquaintance.

Later on the night of February 16th, the 28-year-old awoke to find their bed engulfed in flames. The 44-year-old woman has spent the last two weeks in police custody in Mjölby in southern Sweden. She denies the charge of arson.

The 44-year-old is suspected of setting the bed alight after flying into a jealous rage, Expressen reports. The couple's bedroom was completely destroyed in the fire.

On the evening of February 16th, the couple had gone out for dinner at a restaurant in Mjölby. After the meal they invited three men back to their home, where they proceeded to play poker and drink white wine.

At a certain point in the evening the 28-year-old found herself alone with one of the men. She asked him if he would like to have sex with her.

When questioned by police, the man said that he had expressed his concerns but was told that there would be no problems, Expressen reports.

Sitting in the kitchen with another of the men, the 44-year-old wondered where her girlfriend had gone.

She went into the bedroom and discovered the 28-year-old having sex with their acquaintance.

"She said that she wanted to have a child, but I said, 'not with him'," the 44-year-old told police.

Opinions differ on what happened next. The 28-year-old says that she went to sleep on the sofa after their disagreement. After a while she heard the fire alarm and went to investigate.

She found her partner beside the bed with a cigarette lighter in her hand. The entire room was ablaze, Expressen reports.

"I am glad to be alive," the younger woman told the newspaper.

The 44-year-old says that she too heard the alarm but claims not to know what might have started the fire.

She will be given further opportunity to defend her position when the court case begins next week.

The 28-year-old has moved out of the home they once shared and has found new accommodation.

"There are really no words to describe this. It is tragic that it has to end this way," she told Expressen.
