Seeding Arm Of FRM Teams Up With Varna Hedge Fund

The hedge fund seeding division of Financial Risk Management FRM, and Varna Capital LLC,  have formed a strategic relationship which involves FCA making a significant investment in Varna’s first fund.

Varna is a newly formed hedge fund manager based in New York and headed by Svetlana Lee. Following the signing of the strategic relationship, Varna is expected to launch its first fund during the fourth quarter of 2010.

SEC: $1Million Whistleblower Payout

Based on the new Dodd-Frank Act that was just signed into law last week by President Obama, new legislation allows the SEC to award huge sums to whistleblowers in insider-trading cases such as the one against hedge fund Pequot Capital Management.

Hedge Funds Tip Off FBI in Disney Debacle

In what looks like an muddled attempt at insider trading, a Disney press office secretary was accused of trying to sell Disney’s quarterly figures three days before they were due to be announced, according to TimesOnline.

It is alleged that dozens of hedge funds received emails and phone calls from Bonnie Hoxie and her friend Yonni Sebbag, asking “for discretion,” ¯ in the proposed exchange.

Hedge Fund Managers & Social Media

Financial services professionals are using social media platforms like Blogger, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, despite oft-cited concerns over running afoul of FINRA regulations over allowable communications, according to a survey by SEC-registered investment advisory firm, Horizon Cash Management .

Most of the respondents 82 percent to a recent ’spot’¯ survey were at least somewhat familiar with social media; 55 percent using them both professionally as well as personally.

Interview: Public Pension Plans to Top Corporate Plans In US Hedge Fund Allocation

“The new legislation does not directly impact public pension funds.” Don Steinbrugge, Managing Member at Agecroft Partners, LLC, said in an interview this morning, “Corporate pension fund allocations have historically targeted a higher risk and return profile than public pension funds, but that may be changing due to the passage of the 2006 Pension Protection Act that became effective in 2008.”

“While 2010 to date has been affected by an imbalance of supply and demand resulting in illiquidity in the life settlement marketplace, as a burgeoning asset class, it continues to offer a compelling long term risk-adjusted return as compared to the market as a whole”¯. Torben Rankine, the fund’s manager, said.
