A Haiti Benefit at Nikki Midtown

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’m writing this on less than four hours of sleep so forgive me if my natural spell-check is off… Last night I was invited (along with most of Manhattan) to a fundraiser benefitting UNICEF’s Haiti relief-fund. It was held at Nikki Beach in midtown just a couple of blocks from my work so I took the opportunity to bring some friends over and experience the space.

Nikki in NYC is a sister-lounge to famed Nikki Beach in Miami. It’s also a lot like a teaser of the South Beach club, with  lounge beds in a white-washed space with orange accents. The staff, all dressed in white, look like cabana-boys and have that friendly, laid-back island demeanor. They also mixed drinks like the rum factory was in the backyard… all your missing is a bit of sand and bikini-temperatures.

Parties in midtown can bring a really eclectic crowd – this was no different. You have hipsters and wannabes, the over-40 crowd from the surrounding law firms and government agencies, travelers in town on business, and a few young girls in short, sparkly dresses (aka: high-end call girls). The effect is a completely unpretentious affair with a soundtrack that spans salsa, old-school hip hop and top 40 hits.

I suspect the door policy is a lot stricter on regular nights, but if your in the mood for a tropical escape in the middle of Manhattan, it might be worth a rum cocktail at Nikki’s.

A Swedish Snooze Fest

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Last night I attended a Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals event to learn about a new Swedish (down to the homegrown potatoes) vodka, Karlsson’s Gold. I’m sad to say it, but it sort of reminded me why I live here and not in Sweden. Despite the flowing liquor, it was sort of a snooze fest.

When Americans go out to network they come armed with funny stories, a pocket full of business cards and an attitude that says I am going to meet everyone tonight ant they are going to remember me. When Swedes go out to network, they head to a corner and play with their Blackberry’s until a familiar face walks in. Even though there was a business card raffle, nary a business card was in the pot. It might have been because most people were interns or trainees but that would seem like a reason to want to make as many connections as possible. Not here.  Networking looked like a chore rather than an opportunity to meet people.

I’m sure if I’d stayed past the 45 minute speech things would have livened up with an accelerated intake of vodka. Maybe next time.

I was, however, pleasantly reminded of Aquavit, where the event was held. Tucked in on a midtown side street and known mostly as a business lunch type of locale, it’s not the first suggestion that comes to mind for after-hours. The bar area, however, is actually really inviting, with warm lighting and modern but comfy lounge chairs that feel perfect for a winter-night happy hour.

A Party to Kick Off the New Year

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Some unforeseen incidents that left my husband bedridden and me with my thumb in a brace put a slow start to the new year (and to my blogging)… Last night, however, I was able to attend a reception that kicked off  2010 in a fancy fashion.

The British Consul-General held a reception at his home  in honor of three recently appointed Officers of the Order of the British Empire: actor Alan Cumming, activist Dominic MacSorley, and the late Paul Nicholls, whose fight for cancer patients came to an end when he lost his own battle to the disease last year, but whose legacy lives on.

Isn’t that just so New York? A Swede at a British party honoring expats  making their mark in the world’s melting pot?

There was a serious undertone to the event, as all three honorees were being recognized for their valiant contribution to charitable causes around the world. But a guest list of bright young stars and activists kept the event lively. Designer Kenneth Cole and Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey added glitz to the evening.

After some cocktails and sausage rolls (in true Brit fashion) I feel fully charged to embrace the new year and look forward to the Swedish Chamber of Commerce reception later this week!

Gott Nytt Ar!

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Hey folks! Welcome to 2010. My suggestion for day 1 of the New Year: do absolutely nothing. Chill out on the couch, eat leftovers and watch bad movies on TV.

Happy New Year :)
