Sweden’s Answer to Rihanna: Elliphant?

Monday, January 28th, 2013

So wonders contributor Nicole James on Fuse.tv

I have never been a music fanatic and pretty safe to say I am still not. But of late, I have been more and more fascinated with the Swedish music export. And not only the bands, but the Swedes behind the scenes from songwriters and producers like multi-megahit wonder Max Martin to music video sound and video editing by the many talented, award-winning people at Chimney Pot Stockholm.

Swedes seem to get away with lyrics like “Waking up in a pile of shit” and singing in some weird Swedishised Jamaican patois and the oddest emphasis/pronunciation of “shadow”. YouTube link to Elliphant Down on Life

elliphant

The video, shot in Iceland, suggests along with Elliphant’s real name, Ellinor Olovsdotter, she might have Icelandic roots? No clue.

Nice groove, regardless.

Swedish statue: Identity protected on Google

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Seems as if Google’s Street View doesn’t want any liability actions. Not from a wooden statue at least.

google

Old Man Rosenbom hails from the Swedish town of Karlskrona. His image was captured when Street View filmed the streets and squares of Sweden. His image has been blurred in order to “preserve his integrity” a regular service Google provides for the human faces caught on film.

Smart technologies are still not smart enough yet. Not to discern between reality and art.

I wonder which other street images are blurred.

Innovative Sweden: Playable frozen record

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Add water, freeze and spin. Sit back and listen to your turntable spin Blue Ice, a new release by Shout Out Louds, a Stockholm based indie rock band. And when it melts, just add more water, refreeze and spin again. Bet you are glad you kept your old turntable.

blue ice

Sweden always ranks high on innovation rankings. But I have always admired the creativity value that accompanies many new ideas, products or methods. The band, set to release a new album wanted the single, Blue Ice, wanted something out of the ordinary to draw attention. The concept of a playable frozen record seemed to fit the mould. Swedish advertising experts at TBWA/Stockholm, deserve a well-earned shout out [louds] for this bit of masterful marketing.

Personally, I had to see it to believe it. Here is a YouTube clip of how it works.

Only 10 record sets were produced. One was donated to raise money for the Swedish Radio’s charity collection Musikhjälpen 2012. The theme was fittingly to help children in impoverished nations have better access to clean water. It sold for SEK 4758 (or $730). Here is the link to the now closed auction.

Sweden’s quirky signs: No Balloons allowed

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Sweden is exceptionally kid friendly, though apparently not for those carrying balloons. At least not in its southern city of Malmö. A friend spied a menacing anti-jovial not-allowed sign this morning at Malmö’s Triangle train station.
no balloons

According to Sydsvenskan, Sweden’s southern regional daily paper, the no-go zone for helium-filled balloons includes Malmö’s City Tunnel.

Apparently, the balloons get stuck in the electrical lines and short the system.
– The tunnel is low and balloons cannot rise over the lines, said Bodil Sonesson from the Swedish Transport Adminstration.

What is the world coming to when a child is forbidden from carrying a balloon!

"I woke up in the comfort of my own little cabin on Eva and Rolf’s boat, it was 7:30am and I was feeling a bit groggy after a couple of beers with all the lovely locals the night before. The previous day had really taken its toll on my body and I was very stiff and..." READ »

Sharing our Pride: Celebrating Love & the LGBT Community! (Stockholm in my American Heart) »

"It’s mid- July in Stockholm, and with much of the city on vacation, things can seem a little quiet – the streets, the bus, and the grocery store. One thing that has not paused for a summer break, though, is preparation for Stockholm’s Pride Festival, which will take place from July 28 to August 2...." READ »
