Question : Why was Mr. Jerome Holland a soul brother, sent to Sweden as the American Ambassador, whilst the Vietnam war was still raging and Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme himself, arm in arm with North Vietnam’s ambassador to Moscow was leading anti-Vietnam War demonstrations in Stockholm? ( Actually, he only did it once?)
Answer: First of all because of that anti-Vietnam war demonstration with North Vietnam’s Ambassador to Russia and Prime Minister Olof Palme marching foot to foot as leaders of the demon-stration, the American Government recalled their Ambassador from Sweden – back home – for consultations – and
prior to my enlightenment on the issue, I myself had erroneously assumed that the soul brother had been sent to catch hell from the demonstrators here in lieu of his White American counterpart that he was replacing.
But a more plausible – and non-raciest reason was that ( well I discovered that whilst I was here in the summer of 1970 ) there were more than a few hundred soul brothers who had deserted from Germany - CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS they were called and a few hundred others who had deserted from both Germany and elsewhere and had got political asylum here in Sweden. I got to know some of them a little better on my second visit to Sweden in 1971, when I started taking up a more permanent residence here – the reason for Sweden? Cherche la femme !
I’m given to understand by one who knows ( Brother Harvey Cropper ) that Stokely Carmichael had been over here to extend his SNCC activities and to start up “some sort of Black Zionism”, Harvey said, and it was the term “Black Zionism” which got me to sit up a little and pay greater attention to what he was saying.
“ Black Zionism?” I asked and expected the Full Monty.
“Yes, Black Zionism ! He wanted all of us to be donating 10% of what we earned – to the cause “
“ Well, that’s not a bad idea”, said I.
“Ten percent !?!”
“Well what about 5%?” I asked hopefully
“Zero per cent !” was the final retort. And that was that.
The moot problem was to whom /exactly which organisation was to be receiving the ten percent? Perhaps that and some more questions arising, such as, and for what – exactly would the money be USED, disbursed?
(Incidentally, I got fired not too long ago by some Egyptian guy who called me up to his office and told me, “ I refuse to go on paying some Zionist who gives 10% of his monthly salary to the Israeli government so that they can go on killing Palestinians!”
I was flabbergasted. )
Nothing wrong with Black Zionism, the way I see it ….that’s what Marcus Garvey Africa’s first black president preached most of the time…
But this time round, it didn’t work, the suggestion didn’t catch fire, at least not here in Stockholm
Bobby Seale also turned up ( stayed at Brother Harvey’s studio…… and when you have Seale at the heels of Stokely, that can only lead to some kind of spontaneous combustion and to a long story, peopled by greater detail and events which I cannot recount here at least not yet.…. Anyway, they heard it on the grapevine and that was the rumour going round and round, that America was racist and so America sent Brother Jerome Holland to show that America was not racist.
And now we have Brother Obama to lay all doubts to rest….
