Ferenc Göndör has been called to his eternal home.

“the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

Of Ferenc Göndör – Remembrance of a righteous one brings blessing (Proverbs 10:7)

It’s a great loss. Several obituaries have been written in Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter

A picture of Mr.Ferenc Göndör

Mr. Ferenc Göndör is gone. His immediate family, his son Eli and his daughter Eva in Jerusalem mourn and so do all of us of his little family at Adat Israel – and beyond. Tall, thin but sprightly, since the mid 90s when I lived within walking distance of the synagogue, he – especially he would always welcome me with a smile and a “you are welcome” and “good to see you” on Sabbath mornings – he and his dearly departed friend, the late Mr. Mikael Elias.

Mr. Göndör is a witness that belongs to a generation of survivors that is slowly passing away with the years, the Auschwitz generation of which a few survivors still remain to be giving living testimony of what happened – to confront the Holocaust deniers and their unfeeling propaganda, face to face.

He wrote “A-6171 – A Jewish odyssey” Perhaps better translated as “A Jewish Destiny”?

For his writings and his other very important work of weekly visits to schools and giving lectures about the Holocaust there – all in the spirit of combating anti-Semitism, he received the Tage Danielsson Prize and some ten years later the 8th grade of the Illis Quorum Medal on Holocaust Remembrance Day in January of 2005

Just as Raoul Wallenberg is associated with Hungary and saving Hungarian Jews from being Holocausted, so too as fate would have it – a Hungarian Jew by the name of Ferenc Göndör lost all his family in concentration camps but he himself  survived and escaped from a terminal fate in the Auschwitz concentration camp in which he was incarcerated/interned  – to a  more fruitful life in freedom in Wallenberg’s Sweden where he started a family.

We all miss him,  now.

Sweden should build a real memorial for Raoul Wallenberg for what he accomplished in his lifetime.

WE must honour our own.

Well, almost everyone else has done that

– except for the country in which he was born and bred, the country whose air he breathed and whose milk suckled him as an infant, whose values and culture and higher ideals surely shaped his life, the country which he represented as a diplomat.

And according to Trowbridge H. Ford, not only in his life time – and even now he is bigger than he was some time ago when even many of those whom he saved knew nothing about him – or who he was. Of course, all this is in absolute contrast with certain other men, as it’s been famously said,

The evil that men do lives after them;

The good is oft interred with their bones.”

http://www.thelocal.se/blogs/corneliushamelberg/2010/04/05/attn-trowbridge-h-ford-re-soviets-lied-over-wallenberg-death-researchers/#comments

At the beginning of Comment 13 Mr Ford fields a Great Suggestion

one which can be carried through by the popular will – to show appreciation and  for the hero to lead – even from the grave, to lead and show the way by good example. In saying this right now, the immediate background to such thoughts is the on-going exhibition  at the Ethnographic Museum  in Stockholm, entitled “(In)-Human”, featuring some of our world history, from

slavery

and from slavery

through colonialism, race biology, a couple of world wars, and other struggles leading to the liberation of Angola and Mozambique from Portugal in 1975 and the liberation of all Fathers and Mothers, Brothers and Sisters and babies from the Klux clutches of Apartheid South Africa in 1994.

A more immediate background that re-lights/ kindles the emotion that seconds Trowbridge H. Ford’s suggestion is still fresh – as it’s less than twenty four hours ago ama coming from a very moving memorial (minnesstund) for Gunnar Ohrlander ( my wife’s first cousin) and what emerged as the programme progressed there at Södra Teatern with personal accounts by his children, Mattias, Kristina and Jenny, and equally moving personal testimonies and loving memories from his sisters Kajsa and Margareta and further biographical sketches, anecdotes quotes and chronicles from his colleagues  and friends and the songs and the moving music of that moving occasion – what emerged  was a more composite Gunnar Ohrlander complemented by what each and everyone had to contribute to his gestalt – not larger than life – as he now lives on through what he has done and what he continues to mean to those whose lives he has touched and will surely touch in the future and not only through his written and spoken words.

There’s the Gormander Prize , as one of his pen-names was Dr. Gormander…

Robert Aschberg proposed a fund – accurate details of which will surely be made more official later –

And still thinking of  the world of Gunnar Ohrlander, Raoul Wallenberg, and the approaching people’s election in Sweden, I’m reading for the fifth time – this song – and even in reading this song ama also thinking of some of the deeper implications of its text as if it were both a Swedish and an Israeli song and here it is

“ Det var jag som byggde landet”

( Text: Gunnar Ohrlander

Music: Gunnar Idering, Rolf Adolfsson och Stefan Ringbom)

” Jag röjde upp i skogen

Jag odlade min mark

Jag slet ont och gräset växte grönt

Jag byggde en fabrik

Åt herrarna i höjden

Jag bröt upp malm

Och drev maskinen fram

Och jag byggde vägen hit

Och huset där jag bor.

Nu sitter jag med brutten  rygg

Vart tog allt vägen?

Det var jag som byggde landet

Med mina händer och min rygg

Nu frågar jag för vem det är

Vi bygger detta land

Nu frågar jag  för vem det är

Vi bygger detta land? ”

I’ll attempt a translation, sometime after the stars come out…

Just a few words

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Dayan ha emet:and here in Sweden it’s nothing to do with the Jante but more with Nordic temperament which even  when in sorrow, it’s  more or less the norm that we do not show too much emotion in public.

First  Gunnar Ohrlander, still looking fit in October, then the  kindly and sprightly Rune Nyberg who I last saw alive on Sunday evening 11th April at Dalen Sjukhus /hospital and with whom I walked arm in arm on 1st May 2006 from Humlegården to Norra Bantorget  - when he was 90 years old, to listen to Göran Persson.

Very much sorrow and much to be missed by both our sorrowing families and friends. May their perfect souls continue the journey that we must all make into the mystery of what for many of us is still unknown.

Yesterday’s news

A beautiful man , the voice of a soul

And today, a lot of people feeling just like this

Yesterday: since there’s no mobile traffic along the main route in the innermost heart of Stockholm City (still laying out the tramline which must be ready and running in time for the Royal Wedding) and so we (my son, my grandson and I) took a long walk from the Central Station past Djurgårdsbron and then bus 69  past the American Embassy, past the Maritime Museum, past the National Sports Museum, past the Technical Museum, to the Ethnographic Museum’s latest  exhibition entitled “(IN)HUMAN”.  It’s about man’s inhumanity to man – some of it is about RACE BIOLOGY. It’s worth seeing. And for me, after that see-ing it was inevitable to be thinking long thoughts that led back to Mary Robinson chairwomaning that infamous Durban meeting and this is the next to last word on that (the precursor to Durban 1 & 2)

Some say and I say it too: that it’s the heart-centre of Jewish consciousness, whilst others say that it’s the centre of the Universe, worth living and dying for – and yet some other others say that their centre is Mecca followed by Medina.

Meanwhile, in Great Britain the election campaigning is heating up and the Brits it seems are gearing up for that now famous magic word used by Barack Hussein Obama : Change : – and  since the problem is “ it’s the economy, stupid”  there’s the kind of change (that remains in the pocket after recurring expenses are all paid (and paid in full) as in this early rap line which you’ll find, if you read on, somewhere down the line, the meaning of the word change that a poor man has in mind, as in “because one didn’t receive the correct change”

Over here, in Moder Svea it (the campaign) hasn’t really started yet and it’s the latter change that the majority poor (the not so rich) people have in mind – so that they too can chirp in choirs and sing in the chorus of  “ Yes we can”,  yes we too can buy.

I guess that Rune would like that, and Gunnar too and so would Guru.

Next post will comment on the odds for that upcoming day ( September 19th, 2010)

No sinpathy for the d-evil’s party

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Last night I (re-)read pages 1 to 98 of “Edward Said – continuing the conversation”

Continue the conversation/ khutbah/ sermon/ monologue/ soliloquy/argument/ we must – unless the subject matter is so holy or forbidden that we can’t talk about it. N. B. “måste” is a very Swedish word

And it’s not as if – it – is only alive because we talk about it (the way we talk about Jesus) – or that it would disappear into non-existence if nobody talked about it. It’s talked about because it’s real.Very much so.

It’s Sunday morning of the 16th May 2010 and in many quarters it’s still common to be licking the dead ashes of the Holocaust and spitting at the dust in the unjustifiable name of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. It’s Bullocks, Balaam & the same racist emotions, whether in the name of anti-religion or xenophobic hate politics.

With reference to Mary

Mary Robinson

(and I’m still holding out for her) it’s her Human Rights instincts that perhaps succeeded in steering the final document that emerged from the racism conference in South Africa to a much watered down version of what the anti-Semites originally intended. Yet, it’s a great disappointment that she permitted the final document to equate Palestinian suffering with the Holocaust. Jeeez, Mary but thanks anyway for presiding over that hate meeting at which all the delegates were already foaming at the mouth as they lined up one after the other to say their hate piece.

Yesterday, the supporters of

Eugène Terre ‘Blanche

demonstrated on his behalf, and this took place at St. Eriksplan, right here  in Stockholm. I thought that these kinds of demonstrations were only permitted in Malmö :

it’s classic : brave old lady & her umbrella vs. Nazi Youth in marching uniform

I have many other heroines near and far (apart from those who are closest to me):

Such as:

Janet Radcliffe Richards

Barbara Spector

Mary Midgley

Birgitta Trotzig

And whilst still on the theme of “emancipate yourself from mental slavery” of course  Barack Hussein Obama & Eric Himpton Holder should pay more attention to Prison Reform and the over-representation of the Black man nation there, by paying closer attention to his coloured constituency and listening to this sister with both of his big ears:

Angela Davis

I’m really looking forward to linking up the UK party leader debate with future events ina Mama Mia Svea. If we could arrange similar debates for all the leading party candidates including Sweden’s Democrats, more people would have a clue about what differentiates one party from the other

(Lars Ohly would take more flak for sticking to his guns about his disdain for Royal romances & the Royal Weddings  being part of the state apparatus. I can just see how soulfully Fredrik Reinfeldt would be looking at him – with enough innocence and wonder and amazement and batting his eyelids, a little fake (theatrical or real) puzzlement in his soulful eyes – looking on at Ohly the only ogre of the piece  and shaking his head sadly and thereby winning immense sympathy. (Of course it’s UNTHINKABLE that a UK party leader could or would have had the balls to reject an invitation by Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II to the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana – and that such a party leader could have entertained any hope of getting even 5% at the elections slotted to take place exactly three months later.

But there again, Great Sweden is not the same as the United Kingdom even if they both have a Great Monarchy that is loved by THE PEOPLE.

So far for sympathy. Next we must (måste) take a closer look at what’s happening in Merry England as a pre-figuration of what’s likely to happen over here  and let us all please be mindful that the Swedish elections are going to take place on the day after Yom Kippur – the day when the judgment is SEALED – by the Almighty Himself.

Hope-fully, to be continued under a new head-ing about the forthcoming Swedish Elections…

The FGM discussion seems to have died down, but never arrived at an amicable conclusion

That kind of controversy seldom does. Sometimes they go on forever. And ever.

Now, about talking/ explaining/ not explaining Islam and Islamic positions, as the Quran says,

they won’t be happy with you until you follow them

And you know who “they “are. That’s the way it is.

So don’t worry, be happi.

Of course, if you start yapping like this one – then even the Atheists and other  Mushrikeen will be VERY pleased with you. That’s the way it is.

My contemporary female heroines are  people like

Mary Robinson

Onora O’Neill

Mary Warnock

First it was, ” either you are with us or you are with the terrorists”

Now it’s this

Wishing all a happy ( new year) and a happy weekend and looking forward to linking up the  UK party leader debate with future events ina Mama Mia Svea….

Sympathy letter of consolation and commiseration to sister Nabila Abdul Fattah (3)

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

THIS is as good place as any, in which to begin

since it’s the Almighty Himself, talking.

It’s a repeat of what we heard before first encountered HERE – and there’s hardly anyone in Sweden who doesn’t know THIS

Still thinking about Lars Ohly this morning (angående weddings & funerals) I’d just like to say that on Tuesday evening I attended the Roman Catholic memorial service for the Polish political elite that perished in the plane crash. I attended – at the invitation of a friend, as a human solidarity gesture, although once inside the Church at Medborgarplatsen, with its beautiful glass-tinted windows I must confess to a certain revulsion at the idea of praying to the image of the man on the cross, the crucified Jesus (or to any other man) for their salvation/ redemption. Therefore, at no point did I say “Amen “ to Bishop Arborelius’ prayers, but prayed on my own, to the Almighty Himself, the Almighty Father of not only Jesus of Narzareth who is a Prophet of Islam, according to the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad the son of Abdallah, salallahu alaihi wa salaam.

It was a particularly moving service.

Briefly – Islam can only be spread by word of mouth – by talking about it, by explaining it. It’s called Dawa. It’s something of a responsibility that the serious-minded Muslim does not relinquish or abdicate. In Sweden, Muslims are accosted on the streets and explanations are demanded of them for any negative thing that is reported in the news concerning Islam. Of course they also have a right to remain silent.

The woman problem and Islam as can be observed in Sweden:

Nymako Sabuni did not endear herself to her brothers and sisters from Somalia in particular, when she announced her FGM policy.  It’s not an“Islamic Problem”.

Some of the FGM fallout was discussed here

There’s also been a lot of reactions about the so called “ honour killings”.

What else but that just like the rape & sex scandals in the Catholic Church – we must all be law-abiding citizens…..

The veil, hijab, burqa – the religious basis of women’s dress fashion – Muslim women and Catholic nuns …. but it’s only Muslim women who are being harassed because they look beautiful in their hijabs – and some misguided cowboys (and cowgals) think that it’s Muslim men who are oppressing their women. How wrong can they (all) be !

Without the dignity of the Muslim women it would be the beginning of the end of the Muslim family and without the celibacy of the priests and nuns in the Catholic Church the image of Christ’s “ immaculate conception” and “ the Blessed Virgin Mary” would not only be severly tarnished but would begin to disintegrate/recede in the public’s consciousness…..

Having mentioned the family, I’d like to say that I miss Alf Svensson tremendoulsy.Throughout the years (my time in Sweden, from late 1971 to this date ) he more than any other politician that I can think of, has been the one who has spoken most authentically about THE FAMILY and on behalf of the family and the value of the family &  of family values. In my opinion,  Göran Hägglund his succesor could  perhaps do less well as a fisher of men but be more successful as a fisher of votes were he to  take up that much neglected aspect of Swedish politics….

The importance of the family cannot be overemphasised.

This is what Muammer al-Qadhafi , says about the family

From the Jewish Encyclopedia: the family

Sympathy letter of consolation & commiseration to sister Nabila Abdul Fattah (2)

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

The first letter of sympathy

was full of understatements.

The idea of make your choice:  “you are either with us or with the terrorists” is the crux of the problem – when  “the terrorists “ have been so clearly, relentlessly and visibly defined by the mostly enemy media and that includes all  the carnage that we’ve all seen and been shown on daily TV.

The idea of “either you are with us (USA) & Allies or you are with the enemy – the terrorists” holds water in the immediate aftermath of 911 when the Satanic work of the enemy was still burning, to the ground. But  it’s surely nothing  short of outrageous propaganda which can go on unnoticed  when extended to every area of conflict between USA & allies versus Islamists. Or all occasions on which USA invades a country in the name of democracy.  As someone told me the other day, we are  now entering the final stage – the stage when USA and the USA’s best buddies invade another country, the stage when the Islamist resists with all the means at his disposal and you call him a “terrorist”

Eventually, you invade Sweden (let us assume  by then  the chief province of Eurabia , and when I resist you call me a terrorist? We – terrorists?

Distinctions are to be made about what we mean by terrorist. And this is the difference : that it is someone’s duty to go on explaining – and not only just explaining. So, recently in Moscow it should have come as no surprise to hear it said that they were going to be “exterminated” – not because they are Muslims, but because they are terrorists.

As the demonization of Islam continues, even so called “Moderate Muslims” are under siege. It’s difficult to extricate “Militant Islam” from whatever other type of Islam that  you would like to practice, since the so called Militant Muslim/ militant Islamist will tell you, quoting  the Quran by chapter  and verse and the traditions – the Sunnah – that the Prophet of Islam – salallhu alaihi wa salaam  is the role-model  for  his world-wide followers and that he  himself fought battles and  waged war against  the enemies of Allah & his prophet and that  “Allah  has promised success to the real  Muslims” in the world of Dar al-harb and dar al-Islam

So far it is to be understood that there is really no distinction to be drawn between  Muslims : Islam is one – one Islam  although new terms  have been coined, such as what we hear  mostly about these days, something called “Militant Islam “  which is supposed to be the militant wing  or branch of Islam – a wing or branch that belongs to the same tree or body root of Islam.  Leaves you wondering whether there is  a “Militant Christianity”.  No “Militant Christianity”?

What about The Lord’s Resistance Army ?

In any case, they are not the only one .

I guess you never heard the expression before

No officially militant Judaism – because the national Judaism of the Israel Defense Forces -IDF is always on the defensive?  Officially there’s orthodox, Ultra –orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and even Humanist Judaism. But no officially militant  Judaism or Militant Christianity. Militant Buddhism would be a contradiction in terms ( a contradiction of compassion)  – but many of the martial art forms evolved out of Buddhism’s need to defend itself from evil and the Pakistani and Indian Muslims will here note with satisfaction that I say : “ everyone knows about “ Militant Hinduism” and about Hindu fundamentalism  in the servicer of Indian nationalism. A compassionate  and rather sympathetic review of this is to be found in Agehananda Bharati’s non-political  The Hindu – Muslim interface

However, dear Nabila, it’s Human Rights and the Woman issue that I intend to address when I return from visiting a dear friend in hospital.

In so far as some of the Swedish Islamists talk about a “Swedish Islam”  – which would require a certain degree of acculturation &  adjustment to succeed  here in Sweden  – and the wider Eurabia project, this aspect of  Human Rights and  the woman question  also calls for a litttle bit of  explaining and  advocacy, so that we may be able to live together in peace & perfect harmony…..

I was at Kista earlier on and there a Sayyid was addressing the Shia Brethren, mostly of Iraq and in another room one stair up, Abd -al Wadud ( Servant of the Loving)  a young Swede who studied in Medina, was about to hold forth in a room mostly packed with youngsters – that ’s a Sunday afternoon example  of Islam in Sweden on the rise  and being taught by one of it’s own……

At least al-Islam is not bedeviled by

this kind of problem

Sympathy letter of consolation & commiseration to sister Nabila Abdul Fattah

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Your article entitled

I will not explain my religion any more

is fully understandable and I sympathise with you. In the Islamophobic climate in the Wild West of today (and this includes Sweden which is not so wild) it’s as if every time a bomb explodes in Baghdad or anywhere in Pakistan, each and every Muslim more or less stands accused and is assumed guilty almost like being an ideological accessory after the fact and a sympathiser (until proven innocent) and has to take on the toga of responsibility, put on the mantle of an Imam and in or out of hijab or with or without a turban on his head, has to explain to kuffar why there is so much violence in the world of Islam.

Without talking about the World Wars and the Crusades, it’s still uncontroversial to say that it is not Muslims that have occupied  or colonised the lands of the Kuffar. It is mostly Kuffar (mostly from USA, Great Britain and other NATO lands that have effectively decimated and are still decimating the Muslim populations of Afghansistan – and earlier on Iraq and it is the same Kuffar (as defined by Islam) that have caused untold death and carnage in Pakistan, in the name of either the United Nations or in the name of their holy/unholy wish to impose “democracy” on Muslim countries which would prefer to run their own countries according to Islamic systems of Government and without military interference or oil from the West.

They (the civilized West) have done this without explaining or being called upon to explain the Love and Sword message of Christianity and make no mistake about it, for although the sword is usually associated with Islam it was the saviour of Christianity who said, ” I have not come to bring peace to the earth , but to bring a SWORD !!!”.  Reasonable man. And that was allegedly said, before he faced Pontus Pilate.

You don’t have to explain your religion dear Nabila – just as the aggressors don’t have to explain Christianity in either the Vatican or Northern Ireland, or Germany.

The fear of Islam is mostly political. Geo-political in some instances and there’s also the thirst for oil as the main explanation. The need to control the places that it must be permitted to flow from, without interruption.

By way of explanation there are even local explainers like this affable man of knowledge and reason Dr Parvez Manzoor

About the suicide bomber – yesterday I read A.C. Grayling holding forth on very reason-able grounds for his scepticism about “posthumous felicity” with or without the 72 virgins in Paradise – and he equates this with someone saying “ I will pay my debt to you – maybe – after I die” – but certainly not before. (His exact rational words of Kufr on page 442 of tha book : “The psychology of “worshippers” therefore strikes the critical observer as interesting;they accept as the return of their self-abnegating prostrations before a deity, a promise without guarantees of posthumous felicity. Here, says the critic is the analogy: you lend me ten dollars and I say that I might pay you back, when you are dead.”

These are their rational basis for doubt or disbelief  – and they do not have to be ridiculed for their Kuffarism or Kufr. Or for their ignorance and lack of Iman/ faith. (Perhaps they will roast in the everlasting fire – even if they believe that the fire will not touch them because they have special (fireproof) immunity, or that the fire will only burn them for a few days – or that the fire is only a metaphor and has no real heat or does not exist at all and is just an old wives’ tale.

Yesterday, I read his chapters on religion and on Judaism in his book “Ideas that matter – personal concepts etc” . This is also to be heartily recommended to all of us….there’s nothing disagreeable or irrational in what he says in those sections.

Please feel free to not abide by your decision to not feel called upon or challenged to explain ( the religious basis) or justify politically or in the name of aetheism or Islam whatever  the day-to-day happenings, whether  in Gaza , Pakistan or Vietnam, to every Tom, Dick or Harry & his nafs, who might be stalking you in search of an explanation.

DON’T  explain

Good news for We Sweden. (Nota bene: We = We)

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Unlike the United States of America, Sweden cannot be characterised as “an immigrant nation” or “a great nation of immigrants” (of course with regard to the US, there were the native Amerigo Indian nations already there long before the Spanish Inquisition or Columbus, and whilst the rest of them, starting with the first batch, arrived at Plymouth on the Mayflower, Kunta Kinte and much of the African-American nation arrived by sea on ships like  “the Jesus of Lubeck”

In the term “ We Sweden “, ”We” means that for better or worse We are all in the same national boat. The same football team.

The Good news is self-explanatory. It is both edifying and inspiring, providing as it does,  ideas and examples of good role-models  and their success stories, stories of struggle and success. Ivan Daza himself, fulfils this vital function of providing essential ideas, encouragement and inspiration, a way out of lethargy or despair sometimes caused by the kinds of impasse that are either imposed by what looks like formidable obstacles ( sometimes mere bureaucracy) or obstacles that are imagined in a society that has often been accused of being unfair to immigrants. The fact is nothing attempted, nothing won. So the effect of the good news is, “ Go for it!”

(For the time being please bear with Pa Google’s automated translation. Those with the requisite language competence can revert to the original which was written in Swedish

For a rough translation of “The Handbook for Entrepreneurs”, copy the WORD version of the document (the whole document) and paste it onto Google Translate. It will be far from a perfect translation but still good enough to understand  – until the perfect translation which hopefully, will be available, shortly…

For very many obvious reasons, this is good news for personal lives and for the national life: The employed and the unemployed and even the apparently “un-employ-able” because in both the UK which goes to the polls on 6th of May, and in Sweden where voters will also help to decide our fate on 19th of September, the main issue is ” It’s the economy stupid ! ”

And the Good news is about some of the big and little contributions that can be made in improving the economy and the role of the vast, untapped potential of immigrants in making their own significant contributions to our national life.

Attn Trowbridge H. Ford (re – Soviets lied over Wallenberg death: researchers

Monday, April 5th, 2010

RE :  your words :

“Remember, at this time Count Bernadotte was trying to get Swedes and other Jews out of Germany – what ultimately led to Bernadotte’s shortening the war by getting Himmler to cut it short in Norway. For Bernadotte’s efforts, the Zionists reciprocated by assassinating him in 1948 for trying to achieve peace in Palestine – what the most unreliable Hugh Trevor Roper conveniently covered up by claiming such Swedes were all really anti-semites.”

Etc etc

and your false and misleading characterisation of Hugh Trevor-Roper.

Re “The Soviets lied about Wallenberg”

Sir,

The person in question : RAOUL WALLENBERG

You have certainly not heard the last word about this matter. But mysteries, even deep ones are to be solved and some will be. It’s just that some people are and have been keeping mum and of course have been saying less  – much less than they know. Finito

This could be a little like taking coal to Newcastle!

No doubt you are deep in these matters. About Count Folke Bernadotte apart from his own accounts,  I should like to refer you to  pages 148 to 157  of  “Ben Gurion” by Robert St John

How long do documents survive as classified Information? Can we ever get the whole, composite picture?  Do you have it?

A historian of contemporary history does much the same as an investigative reporter and what is interesting is the point at which propaganda, espionage, counter-espionage, politics and history intersect – at which point gossip becomes even more fertile. But where else to go, where else is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

History is not always pleasant, because we sometimes have to face up to it. With history or even the falsification of history there’s always the question of contending interpretations of rumours of counter-rumours – and of what actually happened. Often, more than one authorized/ unauthorized version.

The main controversy about HTR is his dim view of African History – somewhat akin to the Islamic attitude about everything being Jahiliyya prior to the advent of Islam some 1,441 years ago.

First and foremost Sweden’s Royal Family and the nation at large still mourns Count Bernadotte who it appears was terminated because he wanted to give the Holy Land of Israel to the Arabs.

You are of course familiar with what Trevor Roper says, entitled “ The Bernadotte Myth” in his communication with Bernard Berenson,  written  at Christ Church, Oxford and dated  30 August 1952) to be found on pages  96 to 98  of Hugh Trevor-Roper : “Letters from Oxford”

To refresh you sir :

He tells Berenson, “Still I learn something about the world from these strange inhabitants of it. (See the enclosed note, which might entertain you, about the true facts concerning Count Bernadotte, now at last established by me. It is a copy of a prospectus which I sent to a paper: I don’t think it will inspire them to want the full story)”

It could be painful but still, I’ll quote it in full:

“Since 1945 there has been a great campaign in Sweden to build up the late Count Bernadotte as “the Prince of Peace” who by his diplomacy ended the war and rescued some 20,000 prisoners from the Nazi Concentration Camps. The campaign is connected with internal Swedish politics, i.e. the politics of the “neutral” party who claim that Sweden served humanity better by neutrality than it could have done by belligerency. It was begun by Bernadotte himself who published two books towards it (one has the significant title “Instead of Arms”) and indulged in heavy private propaganda, especially in England and USA. It has been continued in inspired articles, commissioned biographies, etc., largely emanating from Countess Bernadotte (the daughter of H.E. Manville, an asbestos-king); and has been largely successful. In fact it is both dishonest and untrue.

The negotiations which ensured the rescue of the 19,500 prisoners were almost exclusively the work of Felix Kersten, Himmler’s doctor, who had concerted the plan with the Swedish Foreign Minister; Gunther (6) long before Bernadotte appeared.  When Bernadotte arrived in Germany, it was simply as an official of the Red Cross sent to arrange the details of transport according to plans already made between Kersten and Gunther. Further, when it came to implementing these plans, Bernadotte explicitly refused to save any Jews, telling Himmler that he shared his racial views. He also refused to take French and Dutch prisoners.  In all this he was overruled by Kersten and disowned by Gunther, and Himmler in fact promised to Kersten and to the representative of the World Jewish Organization (with whom he had a secret interview!) that he would release the Jews, Frenchmen and Dutchmen as well as the Scandinavians to whom Bernadotte had sought to confine the operation.

In order to obtain the credit for the whole operation, Bernadotte made an alliance with Himmler’s head of intelligence Schellenberg( 7) . Schellenberg was afraid of condemnation as a war criminal for the major part that he had played in the Venlo incident (the kidnapping of Stevens and Best) (8)

Bernadotte promised to protect Schellenberg in Sweden if Schellenberg undertook to ascribe the rescue-work to Bernadotte. Although Bernadotte was unable to save Schellenberg from arrest when Schellenberg, as arranged fled to Sweden, this bargain was nevertheless kept, being in the interest of both parties. Bernadotte went to great lengths to give public testimonials to Schellenberg. Schellenberg in turn ascribed the rescue-work to negotiations between himself and Bernadotte.

For this plan it was necessary of course to silence Kersten. Bernadotte achieved this partly by threats, using his own position as a member of the Swedish royal house, and exploiting the fact that Kersten practises in Stockholm and is therefore vulnerable. Further Kersten knows no English and therefore could not control Bernadotte’s propaganda in England and America; and it was easy to denounce Kersten as Himmler’s doctor. In Bernadotte’s book Kersten is never even named, and before its publication Bernadotte threatened Kersten with harm in Sweden if Kersten made any protest.

These facts are well-known to several people in Germany, the World Jewish Organisation, and Holland. The Germans being mainly members of Himmler’s organisation  keep pretty quiet; the Jews – after the murder of Bernadotte by Jewish extremists – dare not criticize him; but in Holland there have been reactions. (Kersten lives part of the year in Holland and is doctor to the Dutch royal family, and he saved great numbers of Dutchmen in the war.) Finally, last year, a Dutch Royal Commission was set up under a distinguished historian, Prof. Posthumus. (9) The report of this commission has been kept secret (presumably because of its damaging revelations about Bernadotte. I know that it does damage Bernadotte from personal conversations which I have had with Prof. Posthumus); but the result of it was that Kersten was made a Chevalier of the Order of Orange-Nassau and has now been recommended by the Dutch Government for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Of all the foregoing facts I am certain. They are based on documents in the Dutch Royal Institute of War Documentation, on affidavits from Germans and Swedes who were involved, on Himmler’s papers, and on evidence possessed by the World Jewish Organisation. I cannot publish the whole story, since I cannot produce some of the documents which prove it and since I must avoid causing difficulties in Sweden; but I can safely give an account which will be (a) proof against legal action, ( b) capable of substantiation, ( c) sufficient to prick the Bernadotte bubble.”

I would also like to correct the several wrong impressions that someone who knows little about these matters might have when you say “For Bernadotte’s efforts, the Zionists reciprocated by assassinating him in 1948 for trying to achieve peace in Palestine”

These excerpts are from between the pages 148-157 referred to, (from Robert St John’s “ Ben-Gurion”. In my opinion St John is an objective observer and he sets the tone of the tragic drama from the beginning. Please bear in mind exactly what the situation was then, days, barely days after Israel’s Independence

Pages 148-9

“The first cease-fire came into effect at the end of the twenty-seventh day of fighting. It was arranged by Count Folke Bernadotte. Several weeks earlier Bernadotte and David Ben-Gurion had met for the first time at G.H.Q. Sharett (who had by now Hebraized his name from Shertok) was present. Also Dr. Ralph Bunche, Bernadotte’s American Negro assistant.

The tall blond member of the Swedish royal family, cultured and self-possessed, and the short, tough Jewish bulldog did not instantly appeal to each other.

Ben-Gurion eyed the visitor suspiciously.

“I have only come to discuss a truce proposal,” Bernadotte said in English with a heavy Scandinavian accent. “ I cannot deal with the whole problem of the future of Palestine.”

There was something about the way he said it that antagonized Ben-Gurion

On his part, Bernadotte decided  that the Israeli leader was  showing “ a bitter spirit”

“Twice my government has agreed to an unconditional truce;” Ben-Gurion declared. “The Arabs have refused. In spite of that, the Security Council has applied no sanctions against Arabs.”

They argued over many technicalities: then Ben-Gurion said:

“If there is a truce, Jews now separated from their families in Jerusalem must be permitted to be reunited with them.”

When Bernadotte made no reply, Ben-Gurion went on:

“My own daughter Renana is in Jerusalem. I would like to see her. I have not seen her for a long time.”

Bernadotte quickly answered:

“Your official position as commander-in-chief will place obstacles in the way of such a visit.”

The argument went on for a long time. At last the mediator looked at his watch and said he must leave, he had an appointment to attend a concert in Tel Aviv.

It was during the truce which was finally arranged that Bernadotte had to face his next major crisis.

The truce had been in effect nine days when a ship called the “Altalena” approached the shores of Israel”

( It was an Irgun ship  and Ben-Gurion wanted them to turn over their arms to the government and of course they refused. After a hasty cabinet meeting Ben-Gurion,

“ordered the army to disarm Irgun forces at Kfar Vitkin and Israel naval units to take control of the “Altalena”.  In both cases, force was to be used if necessary. The unloading was stopped: the “Altalena” moved out to sea, flanked by two Israel corvettes. It looked like Ben-Gurion had won a bloodless victory.

But the next morning after the Altalena  had anchored within sight of the seafront hotel at Tel Aviv occupied by Bernadotte’s staff, a small boat of Irgun men came ashore, set up guns on the beach and announced defiance of Ben-Gurion, of the regular army, of the United Nations, and of anyone who might try to take from them their ship or its cargo.

Ben-Gurion called his Cabinet into another emergency session. He asked for and received authority to issue an ultimatum to Altalena: surrender or face “military measures”.

Civil war began early that morning………

“ The spectacle of Jews killing Jews on the beach of the only all-Jewish city in the world less than a month after the creation of the first Jewish state in nearly two thousand years had distressed many people, but gradually the world came to see that Ben-Gurion’s firmness had broken a potential revolution and brought under control a terrorist organization that for years  had successfully defied everyone……

In early July the war began again, with Saudi Arabia joining in, which made it six to one instead of five to one…..”

…..Pages 154 – 55:

“In September, Ben-Gurion felt his suspicion of Bernadotte’s friendliness justified when the UN mediator finished work on his own plan to bring peace to the Middle East. Israel was to give up all the Negev, Ramle, and the New City of Jerusalem; Haifa was to become a free port and Lydda a free airport and  all Arab refugees were to be taken back.

Ben-Gurion was at G.H.Q on 17th September when he received a telephone call from Jerusalem.

“Bernadotte has been killed”

The mediator had been on his way to keep an appointment with Dov Joseph, military governor of the New City.

Four men in a jeep blocked the road: Using sten guns, they killed Bernadotte and a French U.N. observer sitting in the car beside him.

The four men in khaki escaped but the Stern Gang had already publicly taken “credit” for the assassination, and had sent notes to consulates in the Jewish part of Jerusalem threatening similar action against anyone who “interferes with the interest of Jewish nationalism”

Ben-Gurion did not vacillate: the instructions that went out from G.H.Q. to the military  commander in Jerusalem  were his:

“No.1: Arrest all Stern members.

“No.2: Find and surround all Stern bases and confiscate all arms.

“No.3: Kill all resisters

“No.4 :  Impose a curfew, close borders and all roads leading out of Jerusalem.

“No.5: Take no action against the Irgun unless they help the Sternists”

“ No.6: Act as soon as forces are available”

That evening the Cabinet approved the Prime Minister’s suggestion to give Irgun until Tuesday noon to disband as a military unit. A twenty thousand dollar reward was posted for the capture of Bernadotte’s murderers.

The Stern leader, Nathan Freidman-Yellin was caught at Haifa port about to flee the country. Hundreds of other Sternists were rounded up. Irgun accepted the ultimatum and disbanded.”
