Simply souperb

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

soup

If you like soups and find that most Stockholm cafes do not offer soups on their lunchtime menus, you will love Souperb. It’s an unpretentious spot right in the center of the Gallerian shopping mall on Hamngatan- most of the other cafes in the middle of the shopping arcade offer the same sandwiches, cakes and coffees but at least Souperb is a little more original and has steered well clear of the standard giant-sized Swedish sandwiches. The green curry chicken soup is wonderful!

Probably not what you’re looking for during the nice fine sunny weather when everyone wants a table outdoors but a good bet if you’re shopping in Gallerian or on a rainy day!

A few Swedish classics …

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Got visitors and want to bring them for something typically Swedish but not sure where to find really good meatballs or wallenbergare???

Here’s a few suggestions from the Stockholm Tourist Board: http://beta.stockholmtown.com/en/Dine/Tips/Classic-Swedish/

But you can’t beat Ulla Winbladh in Djurgården for the best meatballs in town. Tranan, next to Odenplan, comes in a close second; and check out the “wallenbergare” at Haga Forum.

Friday “after work” at Två

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Joined a group of friends for an “after work” at restaurant/bar Två on Rörstrandsgatan yesterday evening. The company and wine was great, the food “lagom”.

Rörstrandsgatan is one of my favorite streets in Stockholm, crammed with cozy bars, value-for-money restaurants and good cafes. Två itself is a place which usually attracts a young, professional kind of crowd and has a kind of classy, trendy atmosphere  without the “Stureplan” feeling.

We’d been there a few months back for an “after work” and it was great – my beef dish, and the caesar salad which I tested were mouth-watering. The wine menu and cocktail list are pretty good and it’s just a nice place to meet friends and talk after work.

They’d changed the menu since the last time I’d visited (in February) to a more summery one with plenty of salads, antipasti, seafood dishes and a burger or two. Unfortunately, this time the food didn’t blow me away so much. I guess I could say it was “lagom” (so-so) … both the caesar salad and the fish stew. I got bacon on my caesar salad but they forgot it on my friend’s – when she asked they brought her along a little bowl of it. Another friend’s plate of mussels were pretty good but I’ve had better in Stockholm, and with a bigger portion of french fries alongside it. And it took AGES to order our food and for it to arrive even though the waitress was friendly and pretty quick to top up our water glasses and to take drinks orders. The bill took even longer to arrive when we asked for it.  The highlight for me was the Chardonnay Marlborough which at SEK 110 a glass was far from cheap … but worth it after a hard working week. And the company!

I like Två so even though the food and service last night was a bit disappointing, I’m not going to give up on it yet. I’ll be back and let’s see maybe it’ll be great again the next time. Perhaps the chef was off sick, you never know… Let me know if you’ve eaten there recently and what you thought!

Eating Italian … with an Italian

Friday, April 24th, 2009

italian-flag

Nipped across the road last night to Il Giardino (just 10 meters from my front door) to take a pizza with an Italian work colleague. I get take-away pizzas from them regularly (when too lazy to cook) and they’re pretty tasty, the service  is friendly and personal (when they get to know you) and a take-away pizza costs between SEK 90-120 including salad and a soft drink. (They’ve got the usual antipasta and pasta dishes too but so far, I’ve never got past their pizza menu!)

But taking an Italian to an Italian restaurant outside of Italy is another matter. And I was curious how she would rank my neighborhood favorite! We both took my ”regular” choice - the Formaggi – which arrived quickly and accompanied by the famous Swedish “coleslaw” that goes with pizzas here and which you either love or hate! Her only comment: “We don’t eat this coleslaw with our pizzas in Italy” but she still ate it and cleaned her plate, admitting that the stone-oven-cooked pizzas were pretty good.

Il Giardino is just a stone’s throw from the Gamla Stan end of Drottninggatan but their food and service is much better than some of the other local spots.  Next time you’re in town doing some shopping, and craving a pizza, try them … generally you don’t need a reservation and will get a table, plus they’re quick!

A good dose of veggies

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Enjoyed a healthy dinner with a friend at Herman’s vegetarian restaurant last night. Even though it’s still pretty chilly for April, if you sit in the upper glassed-in part of the restaurant, you still get some of the “sitting outdoors” feeling and the nice view … thanks to the heated lamps.

At SEK 135 for the dinner buffet, coffee and water, the food’s pretty good value-for-money and even if you’re not a vegetarian, you’ll leave feeling pleasantly surprised … and full! The hummus is delicious, even if a bit heavy on the garlic :-) Everything’s healthy (think about getting an injection of your five portions of veggies and fruit per day) and with a strong emphasis on organic food.

Tricky to explain how to get there if you haven’t been there already, but from Slussen head up the hill with the water on your left hand side (Mosebacke on your right) – when you get to the big bend at the top of the road, go in the little gate to enter the restaurant.

Half a glass of champagne and one oyster please …

Nizar Achmad, gourmet chef, and one of the faces behind the new Cool Stockholm site, has some great tips about his discoveries in Stockholm. Champagne and oysters may not be the first thing on people’s minds in the midst of a recession, but aren’t you curious where you can get half-a-glass of champagne, or an oyster for SEK 28???

Check out Brut Bar at “Prinsen” on Mäster Samuelsgatan.

The biggest pizzas in Stockholm

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Birkastans Restaurang & Pizzeria has the best pizzas in town, if not the largest. It’s a small unpretentious restaurant but they still manage to conjure up 80 different pizza choices. It also has a license to serve alcohol (unlike some of the city’s other pizzerias) so you can wash your meal down with a glass of wine or a beer. Friendly service and if you’re hungry you won’t have to wait longer than 10 or 15 minutes.

Italian fast food … with a difference

Vapiano

If your idea of an Italian restaurant is a cozy, dark, underground spot with the usual pizza and pasta menu, Vapiano might come as somewhat of a surprise. Vapiano is actually a German chain, which offers Italian pasta, antipasta, salads and pizzas in a modern, stylish, and budget friendly way – located in Stockholm’s upmarket Östermalm area. (across the street from the Humlegarden park). Don’t be put off by the red carpet rolled out at the entrance, trendy Vapiano offers Italian food at a price that fits every wallet.

But what makes this place really stand out is the way they prepare the food – pizza, pasta or salad – in front of you. The pasta menu offers a good choice of dishes – for vegetarians and meat/fish lovers – grouped into price categories ranging from around SEK 75 to SEK 140. Choose from around six different types of pasta, including wholemeal or white pasta, then watch your ingredients being blended together.

A nice touch is the pots on the tables of fresh herbs which you can use to garnish your food. There’s also a bar where you can get anything from an espresso coffee to wines and beers. When you purchase something simply swipe your card and pay when leaving.

One word of advice – be prepared for long queues at peak times! Even if there are only five people in front of you, the queues move at a snail’s pace. It’s worth sticking it out but just make sure you’re not starving or in a rush.

Lundberg – a hidden gem

Monday, April 20th, 2009

This is a personal favorite of mine and a place where I have dragged just about everyone I know in Stockholm who in turn have become fans! I’ve probably eaten here around 50 times since moving to Stockholm seven years ago and even if I order Thai chicken coconut dish every time I dine here, I just never get tired of it and it tastes better every time!

Located on the right hand side of Rörstrandsgatan (almost across the road from Lewinsky’s Café), Lundberg is a small cozy restaurant which is usually pretty busy as its popular with the local St. Eriksplan crowd thanks to its diner-friendly prices and casual atmosphere. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to reserve a table but you can always grab a drink at the bar while you wait or ask the waiter to pop your name on the waiting list and you’ll be told how long you have to wait. In the meantime, you can check out one of the other bars along Rörstrandsgatan.

The menu hardly ever changes and the prices are kind to your wallet. Food is not fancy but delicious (especially their lamb “färsbiff” and Thai chicken coconut dishes) and the table turnover is high. So be prepared to eat, enjoy a glass of wine or coffee and leave.
