The most expensive Brownie in town?

On Saturday I paid SEK 87 for a Brownie with vanilla ice-cream in Grill Ruby in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan. Having ordered a coffee, I wanted something sweet on the side and asked the waitress if they had any cakes … she recommended the Brownie which I took without seeing a preview of the price.

It was delicious – warm, soft and chocolatey with a cute ball of icecream on top and I savoured every mouthful. Until the bill came and I discovered my five-minute Brownie session was going to set me back SEK 87, or approx EUR 9.

It was good but definitely too expensive. Even in the most touristy part of Stockholm, I cannot justify almost EUR 12 for a coffee and brownie. Luckily they at least gave us a free coffee refill.

Ahhh, reminiscent of the 199sek bowl of strawberries and cream shortly after midsommar at a restaurant on Sandhamn. Piracy on the high seas! ;o)

Hah! Don’t complain about snack prices til you’ve been to some other countries :P
In Australia the standard price for coffee when out is 4AUD (24SEK) and a brownie with that could be anywhere from 5-9AUD(30-60SEK)…for one small peice….but the most horrendous pricing would be on sandwhiches. A simple beef and chutney sandwich with no extras could go for 5AUD, and a full chicken and salad sanwhich would likely be between 9 and 20AUD. This is all in your average shopping centre, not a fancy restaurant or cinema or airport, which all double the price. I don’t think we would be at the top of the pricing list for most expensive lunches (compared to other countries) either.

To be fair, Gamla Stan, tourist hell? SEK 30 is more the norm for a coffee shop.

$2.00 Canadian for a coffee minimum. $2.00 Canadian for any pastry minimum. $5.00 Canadian for a basic sandwich ie donair, hamburger, ham & cheeze minimum. Soup $2.50 / cup $3.50 / bowl Canadian minimum. Service is usually adequate, generally friendly but often poorly trained & unmotivated.

Try the bacon cheeseburger with a spoonful of their BBQ sauce next time you are at Grill Ruby. At around 210 SEK, it is a little on the pricey side, but it is easily in my top 3 “best burgers in the world” list.
