Travel Lunch on the banks of Lake Vättern

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

If you’re on the E4 headed from Stockholm to Malmö and bored with the selection of Burger Kings, Max Hamburgares and hot dogs at the monotonous gas stations along the route, check out Hotel Gyllene Uttern halfway between the two cities, on the banks of Lake Vättern for lunch.

Exterior of Hotel Gyllene Uttern

Built in the 1930s by Gyllensvaan, a cavalry captain, Hotel Gyllene Uttern was one of Sweden’s first motels. The first thing that strikes you is that it is a mish mash of different architectural styles – one part resembling English castle, another looking like a Swedish wooden cabin, all joined together in an imperfect but interesting way. And then from the restaurant there’s a vast panoramic view over the seemingly endless Lake Vättern.

Last week, when we stopped off for lunch on our way back to Stockholm from Malmö, there was around 30 cm of snow, gray skies and lumps of ice floating in the lake, but it still looked stunning so imagine how it looks basking in sunshine!

The à la carte lunch menu ranges from SEK 145 to SEK 285 but they do a special Travel Lunch in the Riddarsalen restaurant for around SEK 139. For your money, you’ll get the set dish of the day, an extensive salad buffet, water, tea/coffee and biscuits. It’s perfect for people on the road who want a wholesome lunch in a more elaborate atmosphere. And the food is pretty good – think home-cooked dishes served up by motherly, friendly waitresses. If you’ve got more time to spare and want to splash out, go for the à la carte menu. We enjoyed Wallenbergare (a Swedish veal meatball-like speciality) with potato gratin and lingonberries, accompanied with a crammed plate of salad and topped off with an excellent cup of strong coffee to keep us awake on the rest of our journey.

To find Hotel Gyllene Uttern, take the exit for Gränna/Gyllene Uttern, close to Jonköping, and it’s just 5 minutes off the highway on your left hand side.

From al fresco to cellars

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Today feels like the first day of Autumn and a quick glance at the watch proves that the evenings are starting to get longer and darker. Which means it’s time to move from al fresco dining to cozy, candelit restaurants again. Check out Gamla Stan’s Fem Små Hus.

On a cozy sidestreet in the Old Town, Fem Små Hus is made up of five small houses which have been connected to form a restaurant. With its traditional cellar vaults, low ceilings, candlelight ambiance and excellent Swedish food, this is one of the nicest places to try classics such as Västerbotten pie, reindeer and Baltic herring, not to mention its extensive wine menu. One of the all-time favorites for the past 30 years is the, “Kalvfilé Anna Lindberg” (veal fillet), named after Anna Lindberg who owned an illegal tavern in the same block. A little on the pricey side but worth it for the atmosphere and food!

Whiskey on Stockholm’s most touristic street

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

If you’ve strolled along Västerlånggatan (the main thoroughfare in Gamla Stan), you have probably walked right past an unimposing darkish looking restaurant or else wondered what a Scottish-inspired whiskey bar is doing on one of Stockholm’s most touristic streets.

But don’t expect Scottish delicacies inside Glenfiddich Warehouse No 68. Instead they serve Swedish dishes like reindeer, crayfish, Baltic herring, elk carpaccio, cloudberries, Wallenbergare and meatballs. And of course, it’s also a whiskey bar with an impressive array of whiskies from Ireland, Scotland, Japan, the US and even from Sweden.

I dined there last Saturday with some friends from London who were on a first trip to Stockholm. While one person stuck into a steak with fries and pepper sauce, the other was happy to eat his first reindeer steak ever.

I chose this place as it came recommended by two of my friends. Did I like it? Well, my food was pretty good but not mind blowing for the price (we paid SEK 820 for two starters, two main courses and two glasses of Sauvignon white wine). For me the biggest turnoff was the decor – the lighting is quite dark and the wood furnishings don’t really give off a cozy feeling. (The restaurant is tucked away at the very back of the place). Would I go back? Probably yes, but not for a while. But if you are a whiskey lover, I’d definitely recommend checking out their impressive whiskey menu!

A few Swedish classics …

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Got visitors and want to bring them for something typically Swedish but not sure where to find really good meatballs or wallenbergare???

Here’s a few suggestions from the Stockholm Tourist Board: http://beta.stockholmtown.com/en/Dine/Tips/Classic-Swedish/

But you can’t beat Ulla Winbladh in Djurgården for the best meatballs in town. Tranan, next to Odenplan, comes in a close second; and check out the “wallenbergare” at Haga Forum.
