Travel Lunch on the banks of Lake Vättern

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

If you’re on the E4 headed from Stockholm to Malmö and bored with the selection of Burger Kings, Max Hamburgares and hot dogs at the monotonous gas stations along the route, check out Hotel Gyllene Uttern halfway between the two cities, on the banks of Lake Vättern for lunch.

Exterior of Hotel Gyllene Uttern

Built in the 1930s by Gyllensvaan, a cavalry captain, Hotel Gyllene Uttern was one of Sweden’s first motels. The first thing that strikes you is that it is a mish mash of different architectural styles – one part resembling English castle, another looking like a Swedish wooden cabin, all joined together in an imperfect but interesting way. And then from the restaurant there’s a vast panoramic view over the seemingly endless Lake Vättern.

Last week, when we stopped off for lunch on our way back to Stockholm from Malmö, there was around 30 cm of snow, gray skies and lumps of ice floating in the lake, but it still looked stunning so imagine how it looks basking in sunshine!

The à la carte lunch menu ranges from SEK 145 to SEK 285 but they do a special Travel Lunch in the Riddarsalen restaurant for around SEK 139. For your money, you’ll get the set dish of the day, an extensive salad buffet, water, tea/coffee and biscuits. It’s perfect for people on the road who want a wholesome lunch in a more elaborate atmosphere. And the food is pretty good – think home-cooked dishes served up by motherly, friendly waitresses. If you’ve got more time to spare and want to splash out, go for the à la carte menu. We enjoyed Wallenbergare (a Swedish veal meatball-like speciality) with potato gratin and lingonberries, accompanied with a crammed plate of salad and topped off with an excellent cup of strong coffee to keep us awake on the rest of our journey.

To find Hotel Gyllene Uttern, take the exit for Gränna/Gyllene Uttern, close to Jonköping, and it’s just 5 minutes off the highway on your left hand side.

Texas Burger Co – good burgers at a good price!

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Located on the upper floor of the ever-bustling Kungshallen, this no-frills spot has great burgers at a great price. The California burger with avocado and salsa or the bacon and blue cheese burger are worth coming back for every time. Served with fries and coleslaw in a stainless steel basket. Burgers from SEK 80. It’s a good spot to grab something to eat before heading across the road to the Sergel cinema by the  Konserthuset.

A great “fika” spot

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

One of my very favorite cafes in Stockholm right now is Chokladkoppen on the Stortorget square in Gamla Stan, a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace. Officially, it is a gay spot but it is frequented by just about everyone – from tourists to locals addicted to its large cups of white hot chocolate, homemade soups, great pies and especially good chocolate cheesecake.

It’s a good spot to take a “fika”, have a lunch or just to sit solo with a magazine and watch the world pass by. Chokladkoppen is a tiny place inside but luckily during the summer the seating capacity expands by almost 100% thanks to an outdoor terrace facing on to the square. There’s also blankets if the weather turns nippy.

If Chokladkoppen is full, check out next-door neighbour, Kaffekoppen which has the same owner and basically the same menu.

Just bring cash with you because neither place takes cards.

Long lines at herring haven

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Cool Stockholm recommends the Fried Herring wagon at Södermalms square for the best, and greatest variety, of herring in town. Herring burgers, fried herring and mashed potato or just a cup of coffee for SEK 10.

A good dose of veggies

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Enjoyed a healthy dinner with a friend at Herman’s vegetarian restaurant last night. Even though it’s still pretty chilly for April, if you sit in the upper glassed-in part of the restaurant, you still get some of the “sitting outdoors” feeling and the nice view … thanks to the heated lamps.

At SEK 135 for the dinner buffet, coffee and water, the food’s pretty good value-for-money and even if you’re not a vegetarian, you’ll leave feeling pleasantly surprised … and full! The hummus is delicious, even if a bit heavy on the garlic :-) Everything’s healthy (think about getting an injection of your five portions of veggies and fruit per day) and with a strong emphasis on organic food.

Tricky to explain how to get there if you haven’t been there already, but from Slussen head up the hill with the water on your left hand side (Mosebacke on your right) – when you get to the big bend at the top of the road, go in the little gate to enter the restaurant.

The biggest pizzas in Stockholm

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Birkastans Restaurang & Pizzeria has the best pizzas in town, if not the largest. It’s a small unpretentious restaurant but they still manage to conjure up 80 different pizza choices. It also has a license to serve alcohol (unlike some of the city’s other pizzerias) so you can wash your meal down with a glass of wine or a beer. Friendly service and if you’re hungry you won’t have to wait longer than 10 or 15 minutes.

Italian fast food … with a difference

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Vapiano

If your idea of an Italian restaurant is a cozy, dark, underground spot with the usual pizza and pasta menu, Vapiano might come as somewhat of a surprise. Vapiano is actually a German chain, which offers Italian pasta, antipasta, salads and pizzas in a modern, stylish, and budget friendly way – located in Stockholm’s upmarket Östermalm area. (across the street from the Humlegarden park). Don’t be put off by the red carpet rolled out at the entrance, trendy Vapiano offers Italian food at a price that fits every wallet.

But what makes this place really stand out is the way they prepare the food – pizza, pasta or salad – in front of you. The pasta menu offers a good choice of dishes – for vegetarians and meat/fish lovers – grouped into price categories ranging from around SEK 75 to SEK 140. Choose from around six different types of pasta, including wholemeal or white pasta, then watch your ingredients being blended together.

A nice touch is the pots on the tables of fresh herbs which you can use to garnish your food. There’s also a bar where you can get anything from an espresso coffee to wines and beers. When you purchase something simply swipe your card and pay when leaving.

One word of advice – be prepared for long queues at peak times! Even if there are only five people in front of you, the queues move at a snail’s pace. It’s worth sticking it out but just make sure you’re not starving or in a rush.
