“Berlin is Europe’s New York – why doesn’t Sweden have such a great capital?”, said a Swedish friend a few days ago. First I thought that this statement was just the result of too many Mojitos but when I reflected on it I realised that Berlin is really very hyped here at the moment. Swedish fashion websites are full of Berlin bloggers, clubs are most popular if there is a guest DJ from Berlin and a lot of my friends plan a weekend trip to my home country’s capital.
Everybody loves Berlin…and Mareike, too.
Apart from its fantastic club and art scene, Berlin is also famous for the many unique fashion shops. With the help of a friend who lives in Berlin I did a shopping guide for you. Here are our favourite shops.
Pale Blue Eyes, Kastanienallee 50
Let’s start with some Scandinavian fashion. This small shop is known as ‘Der Schwede’ (the Swede) in Berlin because Swedish people own it. You can find a lot of Cheap Monday stuff but also some rather expensive designer garments.
Extrafein, Kastanienalle 55
Chic and hip! A lot of designer clothes so it’s rather expensive.
Wood Wood, Rochstr. 4
One more Scandinavian export in Berlin. A Danish designer shop where you can find a lot of fantastic clothes from for instance Henrik Vibskov, Raf Simons, Commes des Garçons, Maharishi, Camilla Staerk orYazbukey. But don’t forget your Master Card Gold! It’s very expensive!
Apartment, Memhardstr. 8
Here you need luck with the prices. They vary from 50 until 500 Euro.
Traschick, Wühlischstr. 31
According to my friend, one of the best second hand and vintage shops in Berlin.
Jacuzzi, Rosenthaler Str. 19
Something between chic and casual and the prices are ok. Not too expensive but no second hand prices either.
And finally three typical Berlin second hand shops:
Made in Berlin, Neue Schönhauser str 19.
Garage, Ahornstr. 2
Colours, Bergmannstr. 102
I will add shopping guides for Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö/Lund soon.

I was in Berlin last spring and there were hundreds of Swedes and Danes everywhere. I reckon (aside from the fact that it’s a great city) that it’s also because it is cheap. (Swedes love cheap places which are value for money) …. Berlin’s definitely one of the “cheaper” European capitals …. not sure it is such a bargain right now for shopping with the SEK vs Euro rate …but for sure the cocktail bars, restaurants etc are MUCH cheaper than here in Sweden!

Sweden’s capital is in ways greater than Berlin. Much more appealing to the romantic eye. Although Berlin’s fissures, rifts and ghosts are certainly beautiful IMO, they require a taste not all have.
Berlin has expanded into its own bubble (like the economy) and eventually this bubble will burst and the Swedish bobos will move on. Stockholm has, as far as night life, culture, intellectualism, etc go, nothing on Berlin.
P.S. Berlin as Europe’s New York? No way. Berlin’s more like a combination of San Francisco and Detroit: peripheral, oddball, alternative, big, slapstick, bitchy, overrated, intellectual.

My friend who did the comment works for the theatre. I think if you are in this business Berlin is the place to be in Europe (and maybe Vienna, too).

So true! When I was in Berlin I was for instance at a Chinese restaurant and ate a soup for 1,50 Euro. I think nowhere in Sweden you can find such low prices. And also in comparison with other German cities Berlin is very cheap.

and where do they (the swedes) usually go out in berlin?

I think Berghain is quite popular among Swedes, isn’t it?
Cheers,

As many know, fashion is a form of art, art a form of symbolism, and symbolism a means of expression. These are all inter-related facets and fundamental to one another. Much of this, in the end, is rooted in tradition, as tradition is another means of expression and symbolism.
