When it comes to sports I am lazy. Very lazy! I don’t work out at all. Ok, once a year I go jogging but just because my friends convince me that it’s good for my health.
They usually run one time with me since I am so slow and become as red as a lobster after two minutes that it’s not that great fun for them to wait for me all the time.
I think I will never get used to this workout mania in Sweden. Seriously, I am the master in making up bad excuses why I don’t want to join my friends’ indoor bandy matches or their jogging sessions.
“I don’t have that much motivation because I don’t want to lose weight”, I said in the beginning. But this excuse didn’t work at all. “It’s not a beauty thing. It’s about your health. You feel great afterwards”, said my friends.
Apart from that ‘afterwards’ is definitely too late I’m doubtful that it’s all about health. Sweden is a country where people care incredibly much about their look, their style and beauty in general so I can’t imagine that they do not aim to keep their body in shape.
I mean it works. Many Swedes have perfect bodies while I have to see the first ugly traces of my laziness on my body. But to be honest, I don’t care that much. At least not yet…
Ok ok.. I am a Kiwi living in Berlin who does business in Stockholm. Don’t ask me what that means but the Swedes are definitely health obsessed. I thought we were over the top in NZ, but Sweden takes the biscuit. After a recent dinner party in Gothenburg, one of my Swedish friends suggested we walk back to the city centre. I pointed out it was six kilometres away and there is a perfectly good taxi system in Sweden. No! My colleague said.. think of your health…. I am, I said and called a taxi.

If they are so ‘health’ conscious, what goes on their minds when they sit in the sun for hours…Sweden has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer.

I lived in Sweden for 3 years and I don’t agree that they worry about they health. Actually, all the girls look too massive, because after 3 hours at the gym they stuff themselves with unhealthy food. My friends back then always teesed me that I will never find a boyfriend in Sweden because my ass is not big enough.
Obviously people who say those things about Sweden have never visited (or lived) in Switzerland, France or Italy. And I am perfectly happy with my tooned little body.

I have been living in Sweden for about a year now. I do admire the Swedes for looking after their overall health. I think exercising helps offer more than the aesthetic appeal. It is a good period to be with friends, freshening the mind and as a form of de-stressing.
I agree that the health focus should go beyond the look, lsong weight etc.
Being an African, I can see some of the benefits of looking after yourself healthily. diet, exercise and just good common sense should prevail.
I observe that in Africa a lot of the health issues are mostly around lifestyle choice or lack thereof..
I guess it comes down to choices at the end of the day.. I chose health, and I do agree the taxi fares in sweden are horrendous and none negotiable…
