It’s getting dark in Sweden. Black is back.

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I love black because it gives clothes an elegant, cool, sexy and timeless touch. Black is the basic colour of most outfits that I combine. Therefore I’m really looking forward to this year’s autumn fashion. According to the latest ELLE, black is back this season.

The magazine also says that leather and glitter fabrics combined with super high heels are a must-have this autumn.

In other words, 80s galore! The only thing, which is missing is the poodle perm that almost every woman and some men wore during that time (at least in Germany). But it is maybe best to just keep some trends in memory and not repeat everything.

There is no question that leather looks very chic but I generally don’t wear fabrics made from animals since I am a vegetarian. I don’t eat meat so I don’t wear it! Fake leather is unfortunately not an opportunity for me because I find it looks cheap and it is very uncomfortable.

Anyway, black is beautiful! Here is a selection of some clothes that I find good-looking or interesting…plus my new wonderful black boots from DinSko. I think they are a perfect example for this season’s fashion as they look chic and at the same time cool and edgy. And they are black, of course!

The jacket is so cool! It reminds me of the latest Marc Jacobs collection.

Queer is cool. Gay friends and accessories.

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Many gay people fortunately don’t hide their sexuality anymore. However, I read in the German lifestyle magazine Neon that some gay men started avoiding this topic again – but not because of shame and outmoded traditional values. They are annoyed by ‘gayophile’ women who desperately seek a gay best friend to use him as fashionable accessory, according to the magazine. Queer is cool!

I thought about this article since I have quite a lot of gay friends. When I was in high school I took dancing lessons and almost every guy who continued after the basic course was gay (I don’t like clichés but that’s actually true). Anyway, I made lots of gay friends there so that I started to go to gay prides and clubs when I was 17. Here in Sweden I don’t know so many gay people but sometimes I still go to the clubs. The music is fantastic (Madonna is best!) and there are no annoying men who don’t understand that I role my eyes and don’t wink at them.

Of course women love partying with their gay friends! It’s not just about that the most popular clubs are gay clubs like the Berghain in Berlin or that many gay men are interested in so-called ‘female topics’ such as fashion. It is also a certain statement and way of life that is conveyed if a woman goes to a party with her gay friend: I’m independent but not alone!

There are for sure some women who consider their gay best friends as fashionable accessories and that’s of course not ok. However, most women who ask their gay friends if they want to be their ‘plus one’ don’t have in mind to pep up their outfit. I think it is more likely that they don’t want to go alone to a party full of couples. Or what about the possibility that they like their gay friends and want to spend time with them??

Swedish fashion goes political. Sarkozy and bin Laden prints.

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Swedish model Ida Pyk launched her first collection this week featuring shirts with pictures of Nicolas Sarkozy, Osama bin Laden or Swedish politician Maud Olofsson on them. For those who are not that into clothes with politicians or terrorists she designed shirts and tights with cocky texts such as “I was anorexic – but I’m ok now”.

She says that she wants to provoke with her collection. I think this collection is not provocative. It’s just tacky! Apart from that I don’t find the clothes fashion-forward, interesting or modern at all it might be exaggerated to put Maud Olofsson next to Osama bin Laden. I am generally not a supporter of this Swedish politician but that’s just wrong.

When it comes to her “anorexic” shirts and tights I’m wondering what Ida Pyk wants to tell us?! She said in an interview with Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter that she got the idea when she was insulted to be anorexic in her blog on ELLE. She is surely not the first model who is considered as anorexic and if she has problems with that kind of critique she has probably chosen the wrong career.

It is not the first time that Ida Pyk, who lives and works in Paris, caused a stir with her clothes. However, I found the dress with “I fucked Kleerup” somehow funny (in particular when Swedish singer Håkan Hellström asked if she could wear the same dress with his name on it) but she has gone too far with her collection.

I don’t reject the idea of being political in fashion (I’m a political scientist) but the clothes should be smart and interesting. A friend of mine said once “Widerstand braucht Kreativität”, which literally means “resistance needs creativity”. I think that’s exactly what this collection needs: a little bit more creativity. And seriously, who wants to wear a shirt with Sarkozy on it???

Copenhagen Fashion Week. Pigs and donkeys.

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

A Swede told me once that Copenhagen is like the black sheep of Scandinavia. “Where else in the Nordic countries is it possible to buy more or less legally drugs in an occupied hippie district?” he said. When I saw the spring/summer 2010 collections displayed at Copenhagen Fashion Week last week I thought about that. The clothes were really more experimental than the ones presented at Stockholm Fashion Week. In particular the accessories were unique. No black sheep, but pigs and donkeys!

Here are my favourite outfits and the craziest ones that I could find. Maybe the donkey will be the next hip pet next summer. Pugs will be out! I’m wondering how Paris Hilton looks like with a donkey on the red carpet?!

Tokyo Stop. First Japanese Vintage shop in Stockholm.

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Thanks to my friend Grace I just found a wonderful Japanese Vintage shop in Stockholm. When owner Johannes came back from his latest Japan trip he brought two tons (!!!) of vintage clothing with him, which he sells for 300 crowns per kilo now. Yes, per kilo!!! This is so fantastic that I’m thinking about to drive 650km from Lund to Stockholm just to go shopping there.

Apart from that Japanese vintage is sold by the kilo, Tokyo Stop also offers shirts for 100 crowns and trousers for 200-300 crowns. You can even find purses, jewellery, underwear and other cute things such as Japanese dolls at Sweden’s first J-store.

When you are done with shopping or if you wait for your friend you can play Nintendo, read Mangas or enjoy Japanese art. Japan galore!

Here you can find the shop:

Frejgatan 17, Stockholm

Opening hours Wed-Fri 1pm-7pm, Sat 11am-7pm

Check also the blog of the store

‘Bara’ chest. The topless Swedish guy.

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Swedish guys are known for their good taste when it comes to clothes. I have often heart that Finnish guys call them gay because of their interest in style. Generally I also think that many Swedish guys put a lot of effort and time into their outfit and, yes, many of them indeed look great. There is just one thing that confuses me every summer here: being topless…everywhere.

Maybe it is just my personal impression but I have the feeling that, as soon as it becomes warmer outside, Swedish guys throw their fantastic shirts away and prefer the more airy variant. I have seen topless guys at the supermarket, gas station, on their bikes, just everywhere. Moreover, it is not just one type of guy who likes to strip to the waist. You see all kinds of bodies from the six-pack stomach to the beer belly.

I’m wondering if it is more socially accepted if guys are topless in Sweden. Maybe I’m wrong but I think topless guys in Germany are more rare if they are not at the beach, drunk on Mallorca or working on some construction site.

I love clothes. Of course I prefer the well-dressed variant! But if I’m right and topless guys are more accepted in Sweden I’m wondering why. Maybe it’s the old weather story that provides explanations for every kind of Swedish behaviour. It’s getting warmer and everybody is so glad and avid for sun that they think the less clothes the better.

Or maybe Swedish guys just didn’t get the message of the Swedish feminist movement “Bara Bröst” (it literally means both ‘bare breasts’ and ‘just breasts’) who has fought for the right that women are allowed to bathe topless at public swimming pools. Who knows?

However, I am thankful if men at the supermarket counter wear a shirt!
