Noomi Rapace. Sweden’s new style icon?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Film critics have praised Noomi Rapace for her role as Lisbeth Salander in the movies “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and the recently launched “The Girl who played with Fire”. Now Swedish ELLE even considers the 29-year old actress as Sweden’s new style icon.

I agree that Noomi looks interesting. Her face somehow reminds me of the 1980s Kate Bush and she is definitely a breath of fresh air in Sweden’s entertainment world. On the other hand, I am not sure if I really see a style icon. I mean what is typical for Noomi Rapace? I am thinking of something like Lykke Li’s hair bun or the 1960s style of The Hives. A particular feature that everybody relates to a person and that becomes so popular that people imitate it.

Isn’t it rather Lisbeth Salander who is the style icon? I think the character in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy is so modern and interesting that it definitely has the potential to become a style icon in Sweden.

Lisbeth Salander embodies many characteristics that young people are striving for. She is independent, smart, mysterious, an updated feminist and a modern Pippi Longstocking. Similar is her style. She is mostly dressed in black, often wears clothes that neither are typical male nor typical female and looks edgy and hard and at the same time soft and pretty.

Her piercings and tattoos are of course a question of taste. Either you like it or you hate. Personally, I took out my piercings a long time ago and I don’t want them back. But I think they really suit Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander.

However, I am not really convinced that Noomi Rapace is Sweden’s next big style icon. She is an excellent actress and has charisma but I don’t see anything special when it comes to her style. She seems to be one of these celebrities who don’t care so much for clothes but still look fantastic. Or is this image maybe that certain je ne sais quoi that makes her a style icon?

Sweden’s best-dressed man and woman 2009. Pelle Almqvist and Josephine Bornebusch.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I wasn’t surprised that Swedish lifestyle magazine Café gave the prize for best-dressed man to The Hives singer Pelle Almqvist this year. His style is chic and Rock ’n’ Roll at the same time, which I think is really cool. I love the 1960s look of The Hives. The best thing about Pelle’s style is his new haircut as it looks like a combination of Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly.

It is just somehow strange that only Pelle won this prize. I mean the other band members wear exactly the same outfits on stage. However, they are not jealous. “I told them about the prize when we were eating a falafel at home in Fagersta. But they just think it’s cool. They are quite comfortable with pushing Pelle so that he can deal with stuff like that”, told Pelle Café.

Best-dressed Swedish woman is actress Josephine Bornebusch known from for instance the Swedish comedy programme “Parlamentet”. The prize for international style icon went to actress Malin Åkerman who was in the films “The Proposal” and “Watchmen”. Jonny Johansson from the Swedish label Acne received the prize for best designer 2009 and this year’s newcomer is the label “Uniforms for the Dedicated”, which is an international platform for musicians, designers and illustrators.

Laddered tights. Fashionable or cheap?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Who doesn’t know that? You just bought a beautiful new dress and go to a cool party and after two minutes you realise that a huge ladder is running down your leg. That’s so annoying! However, when I saw the pictures of Kate Moss’ new collection for Topshop including laddered tights and more and more girls in Lund wearing that I started to wonder if trashed my old tights to early. Are they fashionable?

Generally I am not really convinced by the idea of combining chic dresses with laddered tights. I think it looks somehow cheap. On the other hand, I do not think at all that Kate Moss looks cheap in laddered tights.

But her style and charisma is really a mystery as she looks elegant and egdy at the same time. Who else could combine a fur coat with laddered tights without looking cheap? Karl Lagerfeld said once that she looks like an elf, which I think perfectly describes her. This woman can have cocaine in her nose and still looks innocent and beautiful.

In other words, Kate Moss just never looks cheap. Not even in laddered tights. But I’m still not sure if I want to destroy my tights. Well, at least I have an excuse next time when I have a ladder in my tights. I just refer to Kate Moss’ latest collection for Topshop and say that I did this ladder on purpose.

There it is…the poodle perm. The Sex and the City 80s revival.

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Swedish ELLE and daily Dagens Nyheter published the first pictures of the second Sex and the City film this week. The pictures are really hilarious because the girls are dressed in hardcore 80s style. Carrie looks like Madonna in “Like a Virgin”, Miranda like an 80s business woman with big shoulder pads, Charlotte’s dress is completely Miami Vice pastel-coloured and Samantha has a huge white blond poodle perm.

A few days ago I write about the comeback of the 80s and that the only thing missing is the poodle perm. Voilà there it is!

I am wondering in which context theses scenes are embedded in the movie. Some flashback to the 80s when the Sex and the City girls were in their twenties? Well, we have to wait until May 2010 when the second Sex and the City movie will be released.

Anyway, here you can find some pictures and a clip:

Ladies, shave your heads! Part två.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

A few months ago I wrote about the increasing popularity of short hair and shaved heads among women. I am sure that this trend has finally left the ‘alternative scene’ as even Stureplan girls say goodbye to long hair and start shaving their head. Stureplan is known as one of Sweden’s fanciest areas.

Rebecca Simonsson, head of Stockholm’s nightclub Utecompagniet, blogger and trendsetter, is the first Stureplan girl who wears the undercut. I think it looks really fantastic even though I generally have a totally different style.

However, Rebecca’s combination is so interesting! It is a mixture between elegance and 80s gothic style. Nice but naughty! It even matches every outfit from party girl to serious businesswoman.

I love contrasts in fashion because they are eye-catchers that make people interesting. Therefore I always combine contrasting colours, prints or styles such as black and white, stripes and dots or elegant and casual.

I’m wondering how far this haircut trend will go. Will there be bankers with Mohawk punk style? Probably not! On the other hand, I remember that my friend Sandra was considered crazy when she wore an undercut a few years ago (she was really into gothic during that time). People thought the haircut didn’t suit her since it looked so male. That attitude obviously changed.

Sweden is a very open and modern country in every respect. In particular in terms of fashion people are curious about new ideas and trends. So we will see.

I am still too cowardly to shave my hair at the moment even though I am sure that I will do it once in my life. But maybe it’s time for short hair again like I had two years ago.

I would like to see more women who dared to shave their head. You are one of these ladies and you have some cool pictures of your new haircut? If so, I would be happy if you sent me some pictures. Send them to mareike.neumann@thelocal.se. If I receive some cool pictures I will write about you here in my blog.

Oh boy it’s a girl! Fashion and gender.

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Gender roles are changing. Slowely but they do! In particular Sweden is known for shaking up traditional ideas of male and female behaviour. Here porn movies can be feminist and men wish to breastfeed their children.

The world of fashion is usually an area that is characterised by a strong gendered division. However, there are indications that fashion finally also starts to be more open towards gender-neutral collections.

Typical women’s wear consists of dresses, skirts or high heels, which sexualise the body by underlining the female silhouette. Classical male clothing such as the suit symbolises money and power. However, when women started entering the labour market, especially the public sector, in the context of the 1960s revolutions designers such as Giorgio Armani or Coco Chanel invented a female variant of the suit.

Today it is not strange anymore if women wear pants or even a tie. However, if men want to try skirts, dresses or high heels people usually think they are gay, on the way to a costume party or crazy. This attitude is changing according to the Swedish ELLE and the German lifestyle magazine Tush. It will become more and more accepted that men adopt typical female clothing. From dress code to cross-dress?

The current cover of the German lifestyle magazine Tush.

That would be fantastic! Looking at Swedish fashion, there are at least tendencies for a more gender-neutral focus. The labels Cheap Monday and Acne currently belong to the country’s most successful fashion exports and design lots of unisex garments.

I see this development also in my personal life. My boyfriend and I often buy the same type of pants and if I consider my wonderful friend Niklas I see the perfect example of a style that is not associated with gender. His style is just fantastic, special and unique! I wish there were more people like him!
