Sweden’s fashion trends 2009.

Monday, December 21st, 2009

As the year draws to a close it’s always the time for top ten lists. People summarise this year’s best songs, most successful movies, funniest quotes and of course fashion trends. So do I. Here’s my top ten list of the most influential fashion trends in Sweden in 2009. It does not reflect my personal favourite trends. This top ten list is rather a summary of what has been hip and hyped in Sweden this year including cool but also bizarre trends.

Sequins

Rare Fashion Allover sequin playsuit

The perfect material for a party dress! Shiny, tacky, cool! Of course, it’s one of these trends that everybody will laugh about in a few years. Photo: Rare Fashion sequin playsuit, Nelly.

Leather and latex leggings

Vila lovely dull leggins nelly

They are chic, edgy, easy to combine, cheap, comfortable and probably in almost every girl’s wardrobe. It’s no surprise that leather and latex leggings have been so popular this year! Photo: Vila Lovely dull leggings, Nelly.

Military style

Rare Fashion military dress Nelly

I don’t know if it was the Michael Jackson hype or just the general retro feeling of the 00-decade that pushed the military style. Anyway, I love it! The dresses remind me of the British 1960s supermodel and style icon Twiggy. Photo: Rare Fashion military dress, Nelly.

Harem pants

Ichi Bumu jumpsuit Nelly

So far I am not really fascinated by these pants. I think they are really unflattering as they look like diapers. However, they are everywhere and I think they are becoming even more popular next year as H&M’s spring/summer 2010 includes several harem pants for women and men. Photo: Ichi Bumu jumpsuit, Nelly.

Fur

Diesel wrett jacket Nelly

Fur, fur, fur! Real and fake! Jackets and hats! Sure, fur keeps warm which is a great plus here in Sweden but it’s not my taste. Poor animals! The faked version looks cheap I think. Photo: Diesel wrett jacket, Nelly.

Dr Marten boots

Either the original or a copy, they are back and look fantastic! Boots from: DinSko.

Gladiator sandals

Rome feeling in Sweden! Gladiator sandals were almost a must-have last summer in Sweden! Photo: Attack, Nelly.

Animal prints

Mina UK Yoko dress

Zebra, leopard, peacock…clothing shops looked like zoos in 2009. The peak was probably when Matthew Williamson and Jimmy Choo launched their collections for H&M in August and October. Photo: Mina UK Yoko dress, Nelly.

Tacky jewellery

DSC_0017

The more rhinestones and colours the better! Actually I am not really a fan of gold jewellery, however, this kind of jewellery, often called ghetto gold, looks so tacky that I think it’s cool. It peps up every boring black outfit. Jewellery from: H&M.

Feathers

Especially during the holidays feathers give every outfit a very chic touch. Check out H&M if you like this kind of 1920s accessories. Alice band from: H&M.

Long johns in Sweden. About cold weather and hot underwear.

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

“Your style is very metrosexual today. I mean the leggings”, said my friend Monica from Spain with a smile to one of our male Swedish friends. The leggings were actually long johns but it’s probably not that strange that a girl from southern Europe has never seen a guy in long underwear before.

It started snowing in Skåne this week and it seems that snow is the unspoken sign that it’s time for long johns. I can totally understand that warm underwear is useful in the northern parts of Sweden where it’s really cold and icy but is it necessary here in Skåne in the south of the country?

It is not much colder here than in Germany where I come from. I might be wrong but I think no German guy who is older than 12 and not skiing in the Alps would ever wear long johns. Or are just my German friends too vain and feel too cool for this warm underwear?

I am wondering if this small detail with the long johns is connected to the Swedish male role. This is just my personal experience but in my opinion it is more accepted here than in other cultures that men show “weakness” instead of pretending the “tough guy” who is never freezing for instance.

Don’t misunderstand me! I don’t mean that gender roles are completely different here but maybe it is more accepted (or even expected?) that a guy admits that he is not superman and resistant against everything.

Or maybe it is just because of the weather. But as I said, it’s actually not that cold here in Skåne. I can still wear skirts without freezing whereas my male friends put on their long johns. Even when we were in Berlin last winter they were all wearing long underwear.

I don’t care so much for underwear but I think long johns are kind of funny. Imagine you meet a cool Swedish guy at a club and realise later that night that he is wearing long johns. Not that sexy! I think I would also say: “Well, your style is very metrosexual!”

Andreas Kleerup: the Swedish Pete Doherty?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Pete Doherty should play in Stockholm and Malmö last weekend. SHOULD. Of course, he couldn’t make it because he lost his passport and was “sick”. I smirked when I read about the cancelled concerts and thought about my experiences with the scandal-ridden British rock star. I tried seeing him twice.

pete doherty

The first time he didn’t show up because he was “sick”. The second time he was about eight hours late. When he asked the public to throw money on the scene I decided that I would never go to one of his concerts again. He said that he was so poor and really needed the money.

Anyway, because of Pete Doherty’s visit to Sweden the City newspaper published an article about Swedish bad boys on Friday. The only guy City came up with was the musician Andreas Kleerup. Yes, the guy who did the song “With every heartbeat” with Robyn. The reason for his bad image was his statement “Some people smoke. Other people smoke other stuff” and some rumours about cocaine abuse.

OK, Pete Doherty and Andreas Kleerup have in some way a similar style. A little bit fucked up. A little bit “I don’t care”. But is Kleerup really a classical bad boy? I think he is a real Swede-heart compared to Pete Doherty. No scandals. No anorexic supermodel girlfriends. No fights with band members. The fact that Kleerup has maybe secretly smoked a joint on the toilet doesn’t make him a bad boy, isn’t it? At least not outside Sweden!

But this is something that I like about Sweden. People are so good and innocent…and they always start their concerts in time…

Tired of equality? Unique and modern shirts for low prices.

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Most Swedes proudly point out that they consider equality important. However, there is one area where they clearly prefer difference: fashion. Many people including me are tired of shirts from giant clothing chains such as H&M but don’t have the money for expensive designer clothes. Therefore online apparel stores such as Threadless have become more and more popular lately.

Young designers and illustrators send their designs to online apparel stores and either the users or a jury decide if they will be printed on a shirt and sold on the website.

I think these pages are a great opportunity for both young designers as their ideas become more public and people looking for more unique but cheap clothing. The shirts usually cost about SEK 100.

By the way, one of my favourite design duos, Yawn, sells a shirt at Ript Apparel today. The two girls have a very happy, colourful and cartoon-like 80s aesthetic, which suits men and women. They say that their favourite colour is rainbow. Can there be something better than some colours in the dark Swedish winter?

“Match Box 13″ is available at Ript Apparel today (November 7).

Saturday: Sonia Rykiel pour H&M.

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Don’t forget that Sonia Rykiel’s lingerie line for H&M will be launched tomorrow (December 5). Here is selection of the pieces that I think are most interesting, a clip from the glamourous runway show at Grand Palais in Paris on Tuesday and interviews with Sonia Rykiel, French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier and topmodel Nadja Auermann.

Sonia Rykiel is the first guest designer to create a lingerie collection for H&M and also the first designer Christmas collaboration. It features 67 luxurious pieces in fluid velvet, silk, satin and rhinestones. Accessories such as brooches, hairbands, pillows and slippers complete the collection.

Definitely very French and very sexy! Some pieces are actually too sexy for my taste but I really like the striped underwear.

The androgynous look. Some impressions.

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

A few days ago I wrote about the popularity of the androgynous look. Today I searched in all my fashion and lifestyle magazines, selected the most interesting or extreme looks and created a small picture gallery about androgyny. My favourite photo is the one with the woman who is dressed like a “cliché 1980s gay guy” (4th picture).

H&M’s spring/summer collection 2010: harem pants and skirts for men.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Harem pants are back. Back? OK, they were called MC Hammer pants in the 1980s but the form has not changed that much. The legs, from the knees down, are fitted while the crotch area is loose and baggy as if it were cut to be a skirt. In other words, they are some kind of mixture between skinny jeans and baggy pants.

Many women in Sweden already own a pair of harem pants although they are not particularly flattering as they make people look smaller and bigger. Of course, “flattering” is a subjective term, which is always connected to a certain beauty ideal.

Anyway, Swedish Glamour offers some insights into H&M’s spring/summer 2010 men’s collection including harem pants. The readers reacted very differently to this trend. Some of them were intrigued by the idea and some of them thought that the pants were incredibly ugly.

So far I can’t say that I would be happy if my boyfriend wore harem pants. On the other hand, it is great that H&M’s designer thought more out of the box this time when it comes to menswear. My male friends often complain that H&M’s menswear is very boring while girls can easily find some cool, modern and cheap clothes.

I’m excited if the collection will become a success or not. In general, it includes many interesting pieces such as kilts or colourful hats.
