Style in Sweden

Comments on fashion and aesthetics

New title, new banner and some thoughts about blog writing.

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Seasons change, so does my blog. I decided to give my blog a new outfit. Thanks to my friend Sandra, who is a very talented graphic designer, I have a fantastic new banner now. I hope you like as much as I do. Check out Sandra’s homepage if you like her style.

As you can see in the banner, the title of my blog has changed to “Style in Sweden – comments on fashion and aesthetics”. I think this title expresses in a much better way what this blog is about.

In the beginning my idea was to make a nightlife and fashion blog. I wanted to show you people who I meet when I go out, because I think Swedes have a great and unique sense of style. However, after some time I realised that I would like to do more than a pure picture blog because I really like writing.

The other problem was that I felt very uncomfortable with publishing my private life. Many bloggers present every detail of their life. A classic in fashion blogs is for instance to show the content of the own handbag. Isn’t that boring? Showing lipgloss and tampons?

That’s just not my style since I like to discuss issues. Questions like: “What is going on in Sweden’s fashion world and what does Mareike think about that? What does an immigrant think about Swedish style?” I think the new title captures this attitude much better. I still would like to include street style in this blog but it is not the focus.

Regarding blog writing, it is an interesting experience for me to get so many comments. When I lived in Germany I only worked for newspapers. Readers usually don’t comment on printed articles if they are not extremely angry. Therefore it has been really interesting to read your opinion on my texts. I hope you will continue with that.

There is just one kind of criticism that I don’t like. Several times people told me that I am stupid to be interested in such an unimportant topic as fashion. I was often suggested to write about politics instead. I don’t understand why people click on my blog if they want to read political articles.

I am also wondering if these people just have one interest in their life?! Yes, I read ELLE and Vogue BUT I also read Spiegel or Dagens Nyheter. This blog shows one part of Mareike – the fashion part. That doesn’t mean that I am not interested in other topics. I am totally aware of that climate change or the economic crisis are of a greater importance than H&M’s spring/summer collection but wouldn’t it be depressing to talk about such extreme serious topics all day?

Although fashion is probably less complex than the economic crisis it shouldn’t be ridiculed. I mean football does not have the same importance either but it is taken seriously. Nobody would suggest a sportswriter to change the topic.

I also want to emphasise that fashion is not just clothes that you put on. What you wear is who you are. Clothes unveil many hidden attitudes of a society or an individual. Why do people from southern countries generally have a more casual style? Because they are more relaxed than people from northern regions.

It is not surprising that Swedes go perfectly dressed to work or school as they have in my opinion a very strict attitude towards rules. Just think about time, drugs or speed limits. My friends are always shocked if I drive 10 km/h too fast on the highway and call me Michael Schumacher. I think this strictness and perfection is obvious in their style.

Anyway, I am looking forward to further interesting discussions and comments.

Have a nice weekend and don’t forget Stockholm Fashion Week next week where Cheap Monday, Minimarket, Acne and other fantastic Swedish designers will display their autumn/winter collections 2010. Check out “Style in Sweden” if you are interested in the latest trends.

Cheers,

Mareike

My friends are getting married…I’m just getting dressed!

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

They say it’s tough to be a teenager because you don’t feel like a child anymore but you are not an adult either. It is something in between. I am 26 and I still feel like that.

Some of friends are already married and have kids. When I meet them it’s all about the kids. First teeth, baptism, diarrhoea, diapers…well the usual baby topics.

When everybody knows the latest baby updates we talk about how incredibly old we are although we are all twenty-somethings.

On the other hand, there are my friends who still live in a dorm and enjoy their life as students including sleeping until 2pm and partying four times a week.

Most people I know either are in the student or in the baby stage. I am wondering what happened to the stage in between?! The stage where you build a career, live in a nice apartment, travel, spend lots of money on fantastic clothes and go to hip parties.

I mean there must be something between a dorm and a diaper! I can’t identify with any of them at the moment. I don’t feel old but I am definitely done with my student life!

I read in the German magazine Spiegel that my generation tend to marry at a younger age again due to insecurity – economic insecurity but also emotional insecurity. The latter means the feeling that you don’t know what to do with your life. Starting a family is definitely a way to make life more meaningful and secure because there are people around you who are always there for you (in the best case).

I think the wish to study as long as possible has similar roots. The university gives security since you have a plan of your life as long as you are a student. If people ask what you are doing you always have an easy and clear answer.

I don’t want to criticise the decisions of other people but it would be great if my interests were a little bit more respected because I am sure that there is a stage between the dorm and the diaper. People with babies sometimes forget that not everybody is as fascinated by first teeth as they are. People can have other passions. For me it’s fashion, music and gender politics.

Sometimes students can’t understand if I don’t want to join the next big party and throw a couch out of the window. Therefore I have been called “boring adult” lately.

I am not boring! But yes, I am an adult.

Trend: show your belly!

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Maybe I should check out my old clothes from the 1990s in my mom’s cellar because, according to Swedish Glamour, belly tops will be one of this year’s spring trends. When I was twelve I thought belly tops were incredibly cool and I was very proud when I finally got my first one. Well, today my enthusiasm is rather limited.

First of all, it reminds me of this whole rave generation of the 1990s and I have never been a real rave girl. The second problem is that belly tops just look great on a flat belly. I don’t mean that only super skinny people can wear belly tops but I think the belly region should not look like Homer Simpson’s. Again, I’m not talking about super skinny people. I have seen lots of people who are a little bit chubbier but who have a flat belly.

Anyway, after ca. 10 years of clubbing including cocktails and bear as well as many visits at McDonalds and other fast food restaurants, my belly is definitely not in the best shape anymore. Therefore I say “Nej tack!” at the moment.

On the other hand, ‘come back’ trends are often not a direct copy of the original. Designers borrow an idea from another decade and give it a twist. I hope they can surprise me with some interesting modifications because the rave belly top is definitely a no-go! However, the preview in Glamour looks promising…

Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Sexy or disgusting?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I watched the Victoria’s Secret fashion show last weekend when it was aired on Swedish television. I actually saw the world’s biggest fashion show for the first time. Lingerie is not really my cup of tea and the show is not that hyped in Europe. Of course, people talk about it and you can find the pictures and prices of the glamorous bras in fashion magazines but it is not broadcasted live during primetime (at least not in the countries where I have lived).

Anyway, I was actually quite shocked when I saw the often-called world’s sexiest models. Most of them looked so skinny, plastic and fake that even my male friends thought that they looked disgusting. I mean it’s a lingerie fashion show! Isn’t lingerie supposed to underline female curves?

Usually I don’t like the never-ending discussions about skinny models because I think it is almost more important that children and teenagers learn and realise that TV is an illusion instead of just blaming the media for every problem in this society. However, when I saw the Victoria’s Secret models I was really shocked about this beauty ideal.

Of course, models are also skinny in other fashion shows but they don’t look like Barbies. I lost interest in Barbies long time ago. Today I prefer humans…

Shoes for the lazy woman.

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

About every second year one of my New Year’s resolutions is to start working out. The more enthusiastic I am in the beginning the quicker I am getting tired of it. The excuses are always the same: no time, too cold, it hurts.

In Germany it is quite easy for me to ignore my bad conscience because most of my friends are as lazy as I am. However, here in Sweden you can’t go to the supermarket without meeting some joggers. People are obsessed with sports!

I already saw some joggers when I went home from the station to my apartment after I had visited my family during Christmas. It was like the joggers were welcoming me: “Welcome back to Sweden, Mareike! Don’t forget your New Year’s resolutions! Time to move!”

Not only these joggers but also my boyfriend who wants me to work out with him and my regular pain in the neck pushed me to give sport one more chance. Therefore I bought some gym shoes today. New clothes always motivate me to become active. If I have a new dress for instance I want to go out.

At a sports outfitters here in Lund the salesman showed me the shoes for the “running woman” because he thought that they would fit best my plans. “Well, I need shoes for the lazy woman. Shoes that are so fantastic that I start to love working out,” I said. He smiled and showed me some shoes. At least the price was fantastic as I bought them in the sales.

OK, now I have shoes. What’s next? Wearing them! Well, it’s too cold to run outside! What did I say about excuses in the beginning? Anyway, maybe the gym is a better alternative in the cold Swedish winter. I hope I can find one that doesn’t play as much Schlager music as the one where I worked out two years ago.

Do you have any tips and tricks so that I really continue this time and don’t quit after four weeks again? How do you motivate yourself when you are working out?
