I watched the Victoria’s Secret fashion show last weekend when it was aired on Swedish television. I actually saw the world’s biggest fashion show for the first time. Lingerie is not really my cup of tea and the show is not that hyped in Europe. Of course, people talk about it and you can find the pictures and prices of the glamorous bras in fashion magazines but it is not broadcasted live during primetime (at least not in the countries where I have lived).

Anyway, I was actually quite shocked when I saw the often-called world’s sexiest models. Most of them looked so skinny, plastic and fake that even my male friends thought that they looked disgusting. I mean it’s a lingerie fashion show! Isn’t lingerie supposed to underline female curves?
Usually I don’t like the never-ending discussions about skinny models because I think it is almost more important that children and teenagers learn and realise that TV is an illusion instead of just blaming the media for every problem in this society. However, when I saw the Victoria’s Secret models I was really shocked about this beauty ideal.
Of course, models are also skinny in other fashion shows but they don’t look like Barbies. I lost interest in Barbies long time ago. Today I prefer humans…

You can make the body thinner but not the head. So those bony models with gigantic heads are damn scary!

Yes it is a shame that only 10% of the population is actually that thin the rest of us the remaining 90% are normal or above normal body types. It is such a sad message to be sending to children that you have to be a certain body type to be normal or accepted. It should be more about being healthy than skin and bones. You have two fine Swedish examples in Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad who were healthy and normal weight through out their careers not skin and bones starving themselves.

I think a pretty good indicator of the of women that men think look good, is to look at the pictures they put up themselves. In the 1980’s Army I saw quite a few pin ups and girls painted on vehicles (inside tank turrets and on the fuel tank of the M-113 Armored Personel Carriers) most of them were rounder and had girl next door bodies. Betty Grable in the one piece bathing suite and Betty Page were the two most popular by a long shot, surprisingly one piece bathing suits were considered better looking. I am sure most modern Gay designers consider these women fat, but most GI’s thought the modern models looked too much like little boys. Look at the girls on the sides of the US Bombers of World War II, the men picked those pictures and they are not skinny at all.

Every so often this arises as a topic of discussion but I, for one, appreciate the fashion designers’ view of what extreme beauty is. As long as they don’t hurt anyone (or themselves), I enjoy the spectacle.
Likewise, I follow a very healthy diet and exercise quite often so that I might adhere to the ideals of how a classic gentleman should look and behave. If I were 300 lbs. of blubber and such ideals were unattainable for me, perhaps I would likewise criticise the extreme look of men’s models today.
There are plenty of “normal-sized” people who I can gawk at in the underground or on the street. But for extreme fashion, that’s what models are for.

I think that this skinny is unhealthy and disgusting.Girls are driven to anorexia partly due to ultra-skinny models. Why not use popular curvy celebrities as Victoria’s Secret models? At least they are normal to above-average size and so girls would be less pressured to be thin. Examples include:
1. Jennifer Lopez
2. Halle Berry
3. Kate Winslet
4. Christina Hendricks
5. Queen Latifah
6. Katherine Heigl
7. Cameron Diaz
8. Charlize Theron
9. Kimberly Walsh (of Girls Aloud)
10. Mariah Carey
11. Beyonce Knowles
12. Jennifer Hudson
We would then emphasize that healthy is more attractive than being stick-thin like the typical models of today.
