Trend: grey hair

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

It’s all about retro, vintage and granny style at the moment. I thought the hype had reached its climax when fashion magazines suggested that granny knickers would be the next great underwear trend. I was wrong. A few days ago I read in the Metro newspaper that having grey hair is a must-have this season. I am not really sure what I should think about that.

It is quite common in my family to get grey hair at an early age. I don’t know how many times I have heart the story about my aunt Elli whose hair turned totally grey in half a year when she was 27. When I was a child I thought the story was hilarious. Now it rather sounds like a horror story to me (I turn 27 this year…).

Looking at style icons such as Kate MossMary Kate Olsen or Pink, it seems that I don’t have to worry about having grey hair soon as all of them proudly wear grey this season. The trend has also reached the Swedish fashion market. When Cheap Monday presented their autumn/winter 2010 collection at Stockholm fashion week in February most of the models had grey hair.

I think it is very interesting when things that are considered ugly suddenly become hip and cool because it demonstrates how subjective and time-bound beauty ideals actually are. On the other hand, I think grey is an incredibly boring colour in particular if people with very light complexion like me wear it. It makes me invisible. Therefore I have almost no grey clothes.

However, I was very curious how I would look like with grey hair so I asked a friend to photoshop my hair. What do you think? I think it really looks fake and strange so I definitely won’t try it in reality!

Style rookie: a 13-year old girl controls the fashion industry

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I read a very interesting article about style rookie, one of the most influential fashion bloggers and style icons at the moment, in the City newspaper last week. Tavi Gevinson, the American girl behind the blog, is often considered the new wunderkind in the fashion industry as she is she is only 13 years old but has an amazing sense of style and professional knowledge. She even sat front row at New York fashion week and was on the red carpet of this year’s Academy Awards.

Adrianna Jalming, the writer of the article in the City newspaper, is of the opinion that there must be something wrong in the fashion industry if a 13-year old child is one of the greatest fashion icons. She thinks that the hype about style rookie is really crazy and reflects today’s youth-obsessed beauty ideal.

I agree on that point. Sure, Tavi has a really professional knowledge regarding fashion but in the end she is still a child. I think the look of a child shouldn’t be considered a hip and cool style as it emphasises unrealistic beauty ideals such as skinny and never-aging bodies.

I am 26 and during the last year I had to realise that I got my first wrinkles. I hate them! I always remove them on pictures. I know it is ridiculous but it is really hard to ignore beauty ideals and just do your own thing although you know how stupid these ideas of marvellous bodies actually are.

Most people who try to ignore beauty ideals fail. Charlotte Roche, a German-British television presenter and author, often was on TV with hairy armpits. She was attacked so much by the media that she started to shave her armpits because she couldn’t handle the mean critique anymore.

Regarding my first wrinkles, I started to convince myself that they don’t represent something ugly of me. They rather show that I am a person who has fun in life and likes to laugh. They might even unveil that I work hard and reflect on lots of things.

It’s cool that Tavi is so interested in fashion but I think it’s poor that so many people treat a child like the new style god who shows us the way.

Trend: denim from head to toe

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I few months ago I friend told me about a horrible date with a guy who was a real nerd and mama’s boy. In the end I said “Jesus, he must be one of these idiots who combine jeans with denim shirts if mummy doesn’t suggest an outfit”! I don’t know if the guy really dresses like that but if he does he is definitely up-to-date as denim is this year’s greatest trend (and I am the idiot…).

I was actually a little bit surprised when I read that denim is so hyped this season. I mean has it ever been out? Can denim be out? Maybe there are more denim pieces available now such as blouses and vests but I have always had at least one pair of jeans in my wardrobe so I am not sure if we can talk about a comeback.

However, it is new to be dressed in denim from head to toe. H&M’s latest collection for spring, “The Blues,” consists of everything denim and blue: shirts, tops, jeans, skirts, jackets and accessories.

I like jeans and I like jeans blouses but combining them is not my cup of tea. I think it looks a little bit boring. An interesting outfit always needs a twist. It’s the same with wearing black. Black is always cool but only black is always boring in my opinion. Just ad some colourful accessories or shoes and the outfit looks much more fashionable.

Another aspect that I don’t like about denim is that it is so uncomfortable. People who have a more casual style often say that they love their jeans because they are so comfortable. I am wondering if they have ever tried a skirt or shorts. Believe me, they are much more comfortable if they are not too short!

Well, I hope that the new denim trend will bring up some new styles because I am a little bit sick of skinny jeans and leggings. Anyway, I like the denim trend. Classics can never go wrong!
